## **OUR AIMS & OBJECTIVES**
The charity’s objectives and purposes are set out in The Lions Club of Morpeth’s Constitution and are to:
- 1) Promote the principles of good citizenship.
- 2) Encourage members to take an active interest in civic, cultural, social and moral welfare of the community.

- 3) Encourage service minded people to serve their community without personal reward.
- 4) Support youth to develop their skills to enable them to participate in society as mature and responsible individuals
- 5) Promote the voluntary sector to improve the conditions of life of people in local, national and International communities.
- 6) Promoting the relief of poverty in particular by providing humanitarian aid and disaster relief.
- 7) Promoting the advancement of health by preventing avoidable blindness, assisting disabled people to lead independent lives or helping to manage health issues.
## **Ensuring our work delivers our aims**
We constantly review our aims, objectives and activities each year to ensure that we are focussing on the most effective means to raise funds and help local communities and individuals. This does change each year depending on circumstances and needs.
The review looks at the success of each activity and event and the benefit accomplished. As a result, less effective activities may be replaced by new events as we move forward.
We refer to the guidance contained in the Charity Commission’s general guidance on public benefit when reviewing our success and planning for the future.
During the year, we raised finance from the public at a number of events as outlined in the Fundraising Report. Hospitals and health related Charities were actively supported by the club during 2024 – 25 and further details of this support is included in the Community Services Report. Message in a Bottle popularity increased significantly this year and was well supported by the Club.
The Club continued to increase its Environmental Activities throughout the year with further involvement with the Morpeth Railway Station and the Greater Morpeth Development Trust. Full details are outlined in the Environmental Activity Report.
Christmas activities included the operation of Santas Sleigh and the Club was invited to a number of functions with the Sleigh much to the delight of many thousands of children and well wishers.
## **The strategies we use in order to meet our objectives**
Provide a range of club wide activities, events or donations that will give benefit to Youth, the General Community, Health or the elderly. The activity or organised events are tailored to meet the needs of that particular group. The following reports will provide fuller information on these activities and organised events that have taken place during the year.
Other organised events may be general fund raisers held in order to provide funds for local causes and families in need, especially towards Christmas where strong provision is made for Children and needy families in the local and outlying area.
A number of events will change from year to year depending on popularity and whether the Trustees feel that the event is likely to be supported by the public.
Since the Club is an integral part of Lions Club International Foundation, we are always mindful of International emergencies and disasters where immediate relief is necessary. As indicated in the various reports, Lions Club of Morpeth are always very active in organising street

collections or other events where appropriate in order to make significant donations to International Disaster Appeals in line with LCIF requests.
Of course it is not always about money and donations. This year Lions have been very actively involved in providing services to the community such as gardening assistance to a local organisation who provide facilities for the blind and partially sighted, to a local Community Hub and the maintenance of flower beds at the local railway station.
## **How our activities deliver public benefit**
More detail on how we deliver public benefit can be gained from the Community Services, Fundraising and Environment reports below.
Over the year, The Lions Club of Morpeth have responded to a wide range of needs from local community to National and International Disaster Relief.
Each request for help and each donation is carefully considered by the Community Services Committee and the Trustees entirely on its merits before being approved by the Club Membership.
## **The Focus of our Work**
In 2024 – 2025 the Club carried out a wide range of successful events which are detailed in the following reports, which form part of this Annual Report.
Organisation of activities and events is the responsibility of the ‘Fundraising Committee’, supported by the full membership of the Club.
The ‘Community Services’ Report and the ‘Fundraising Committee’ Annual Report which follows (pages 7 & 8 respectively), provide greater detail on the events and fund raising activities that we have been able to complete during the year.
The President and Trustees thank all Members of the Club and the Committees for their valued support and contribution in both fundraising and social events throughout the year.
Lastly, sincere thanks must go to the generous public of Morpeth and outlying areas who have also given such strong and consistent support to the Club throughout the year.

## **PRESIDENTS REPORT FOR THE YEAR 2024 – 2025**
The Club continued to be active in the community of both Morpeth and the surrounding area of South East Northumberland. The club maintained it’s highly respected status for the work which we do.
We did work to improve the effectiveness of the club. Trustees attending Lions Trustee training initiatives. We updated our guidance on how we allocate funds to organisations

and individuals. We implemented Service Reporting, which is a global Lions initiative to demonstrate the impact we have our community.
Our Committee chairs, and club officers, worked hard throughout the year.
We again ran two successful Book Sales in the Town Hall.
We continued to expanded our Christmas events with the Santa Sleigh. We took part in the Christmas Lights switch on in Ashington and Morpeth, held fundraising visits, and visited local SEND schools with gifts of selection boxes.
The Community Services Committee worked hard to make sure that we gave appropriate support, often at short notice, to groups and individuals in need.
In other work in the community work we focused on education about, and distribution of, Message in a Bottle. This helps emergency services personnel to save valuable time by knowing if someone has any allergies or medication.
We supported Vision Northumberland’s Talking newspaper and helped to maintain gardens at Vision Northumberland and Morpeth Railway Station.
We welcomed two new members into the club this year.
An essential part of being a members of a Lions club is to enjoy ourselves.
We hosted a visit of several members of the Leiden Lions cub in the Netherlands and had an enjoyable and social weekend.
We had a successful Charter Evening at the Rugby club, a partners evening in June, and also had informal meals after the Book fair, as well as regular monthly Monday meals at various local restaurants.
We ran a Race Night social event which raised £900 for Pegswood Brownies.
As always, we thank our wives and partners for the support that we receive across the whole range of our events.

Thanks to the Club’s fundraising activities the Community Services Committee was able to give donations and make purchases of some £30,000 during the year.
With considerable hardship being felt within our communities we have been asked for help by numerous organisations. The Wansbeck Valley Food featured highly on the list of recipients, not only for donations of financial help in providing food but in individual cases of need in unusual circumstances. For instance we provided a microwave oven and hot water bottles to a family with a member undergoing cancer treatment, they were temporarily without heat or cooking facilities.
Youth projects and schools have been assisted with both funds and equipment for projects and trips
The Club works closely with Northumberland County Council and local support agencies in helping those in need. The Club donates presents and sweets to those families in need at Christmas and these have been supplemented by welcome donations from local firms and individuals.
Hospitals and the associated health related charities received donations. These included Tiny Lives, the Bubble Foundation, Children’s Cancer North, the Sick Children’s Trust, Great North Air Ambulance, Northumberland Blood Bikes,
Our Message in a Wallet initiative, which supplements the existing Message in a Bottle, is going from strength to strength, with the club working closely with, and giving talks to groups. We took a stand taking a stand at the area Dementia Roadshow enabling us to not only liaise with more groups but also the emergency services with the scheme.
The children’s book designed to help children who have suffered or are suffering child abuse, written by a local author who suffered abuse as a child and was supported by the club in it’s introduction to many local schools, has in fact been adopted by other clubs and is getting out beyond our catchment area.
Youth projects were also helped by providing funds for first aid training for the local youth rugby club. Funding for a youth football group in our area and providing books to a specialised teaching class for the improvement of adolescent literacy. We also donated toys and clothing for families in need.
Provided summer holiday activities to some children in need and also a holiday for a family in need.
Under the Environment Committee, the Club continues to help with the vision Northumberland garden with both financial and practical input.
The Club continues to collect unwanted spectacles as part of a Lions nationwide initiative for distribution to countries without adequate eyecare services.
The Club supported humanitarian crises worldwide through Lions Clubs International Foundation.

## **FUNDRAISING REPORT 2024 / 2025**
In line with previous years, **The Lions Club of Morpeth** followed its successful program of events, and as always was prepared to raise funds and assist smaller local organisations at short notice.
Our main fundraising events are listed below:
- 1) Book fairs.
- 2) Charity Banquet evenings.
- 3) Wine tasting evenings.
- 4) Rugby Club fireworks collection.
- 5) Supermarket collections.
- 6) Local community event collections.
- 7) Local Dance/Theatre collections after performances.
- 8) We continue to receive great support from local businesses that have our collecting cans in their premises.
- 9) Our club annual Football score predictor.
- 10) Private sponsors for events.
- 11) We continue to receive donations from private individuals.
- 12) As members of the largest service organisation in the world, **Lions Clubs International** , we continue to respond and give support with International humanitarian projects.
- 13) The Morpeth Lions Santa Sleigh has proved a great hit with the local communities and at Christmas time each year we support approximately 14 public events with Santa and his sleigh which has brought much joy to families and generated significant charitable funds.

## **ENVIRONMENT REPORT 2024 / 2025**
The Club undertook the following projects.
## **William Turner Woodland, Carlisle Park, Morpeth**
Ten year ago as part of the Club’s 40 year celebrations, the Club planted 40 trees on a grass bank adjoining the town’s William Turner garden in the main park. William Turner (1508 – 1568) was a Morpeth born physician and naturalist who became the first person to identify and name plants correctly in English. The Garden includes many species he identified for use in medicine. The Lions

have complimented the garden with a woodland bank of flower and fruit trees identified by William Turner for medicinal properties.
This woodland needs continual management and a small team of Lions has continued this with help from the County Council’s Grounds Team.
## **Morpeth Station Landscape Project**
Four years ago Morpeth Station buildings were undergoing a major facelift. As part of the facelift the Club combined with the Greater Morpeth Development Trust and the Rotary Club to provide two raised shrub and flower beds and a rockery garden. Each year, for two “summer” months, the Club is responsible for weeding and watering the plants. GMDT and Rotary are responsible for another four months. The Club looked after the plants in both the autumn of 2004 and the spring of 2025. Discussions are continuing with Northern (Rail) about landscaping a further area at the Station.
## **The Northumberland County Blind Association (Vision Northumberland)**
The NCBA’s HQ is near the centre of Morpeth. Part of the garden held the award winning Chelsea Flower Show exhibit of some 13 years ago based on the town’s William Turner garden. The garden was neglected due to lack of volunteers with Covid restrictions. The Club formed a gardening team to restore the garden surrounding the HQ. However two years ago it was decided to replace the William Turner element of the garden as it was unsafe for use by the visually impaired. The Club helped in demolishing the previous garden and securing grants for the replacement landscape scheme. This landscaping was completed last summer and includes a paved area and raised flower beds. Since then the Club has continued with the maintenance of the raised beds as well as those parts of the garden outside the paved area.
## **Bulb Planting**
The Greater Morpeth Development Trust planned to plant bulbs on a neglected area adjoining the Morpeth Leisure Centre and Library. The Club took the lead in planning a scheme and organising the planting of several thousand spring bulbs. These gave a magnificent display early in 2025.
## **Cleaswell Hill School**
The Club has agreed to fund gardening equipment for this Special School who are developing a vegetable and fruit garden within their grounds.

Club members help with Morpeth’s litter picks.

## **TREASURERS ANNUAL REPORT AND FINANCIAL STATEMENTS**
The trustees are pleased to present their annual trustees’ report together with the financial statements of the charity for the year ended 30 June 2025.
The financial statements comply with the Charities Act 2022, the Memorandum and Articles of Association, and Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2019)
Full sets of accounts were presented to the Lions Club of Morpeth on 1[st] April 2026 and were approved. The approval was recorded in the Minutes of that Trustees Meeting.
## **1. Financial Review of the year**
The results for the year and the charity's financial position at the end of the year are shown in the attached financial statements.
During the year the Charity had income of £27,801 (2024: £33,130) of which £0 was restricted (2024: £0) and expenditure of £31,337 (2024: £32,614) of which £0 was restricted (2024: £0). There was an operating deficit of £3,536 (2024: surplus £517) of which a £0 was restricted (2024: £0).
At 30 June 2025 the Charity had net assets of £5,646 (2024: £9,182) of which £0 was restricted (2024: £0).
## **Reserves policy/Going concern**
The Trustees consider the level of reserves, £5,646 (2024: £9,182), prudent for the Charity at this time. Our Reserves Policy is reviewed annually.
## **2. Risk Management**
The Trustees have conducted a review of the major risks to which the charity is exposed. A risk register has been established and is updated at least annually. Where appropriate, systems or procedures have been established to mitigate the risks the charity faces. Procedures are in place to ensure compliance with health and safety of volunteers, clients and beneficiaries. These procedures are periodically reviewed to ensure that they continue to meet the needs of the charity.

## **4. Statement of Trustees’ Responsibilities**
The trustees are responsible for preparing the Trustees’ Annual Report and the Financial Statements in accordance with applicable law and United Kingdom Accounting Standards (United Kingdom Generally Accepted Accounting Practice).
Charity SORP requires the trustees to prepare financial statements for each financial year, which give a true and fair view of the state of affairs of the charity and of incoming resources and application of resources, including the receipts and payments of the charity for that year. In preparing those financial statements, the trustees are required to:
- select suitable accounting policies and apply them consistently;
- observe the methods and principles in the Charities SORP;
- make judgements and estimates that are reasonable and prudent;
- state whether applicable accounting standards have been followed, subject to any material departures disclosed and explained in the financial statements;
- prepare the financial statements on the going concern basis unless it is inappropriate to presume that the charity will continue in operation.
The trustees are responsible for keeping accounting records that disclose with reasonable accuracy at any time the financial position of the charity. They are also responsible for safeguarding the assets of the charity and hence for taking reasonable steps for the prevention and detection of fraud and other irregularities.

## **INDEPENDENT EXAMINER'S REPORT TO THE TRUSTEES**
For the year ended 30 June 2025
I report on the financial statements of The Lions Club of Morpeth for the year ended 30 June 2025, which are set out on pages 5 to 12.
## **Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner**
The charity's trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. The charity's trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year under section 144 of the Charities Act 2022 ("the Charities Act) and that an independent examination is needed.
Having satisfied myself that the charity is not subject to audit under company law and is eligible for independent examination, it is my responsibility to:
- examine the accounts under section 145 of the Charities Act,
- to follow the procedures laid down in the general Directions given by the Charity Commission (under section 145(5) (b) of the Charities Act), and
- to state whether particular matters have come to my attention.
## **Basis of independent examiner's statement**
My examination was carried out in accordance with general Directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from the trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a ‘true and fair view’ and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below.
## **Independent examiner's statement**
In connection with my examination, no material matters have come to my attention which gives me cause to believe that in, any material respect:
- the accounting records were not kept in accordance with section 130 of the Charities Act; or
- the accounts did not accord with the accounting records; or
- the accounts did not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and content of accounts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 other than any requirement that the accounts give a "true and fair" view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination.
I have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.

## 1 **Accounting Policies**
The accounts have been prepared on the receipts and payments basis. An audit is not required by the charity's constitution and has not been requested by the trustees.
## 2 **Basis of accounting**
## 2.1 **Preparation of the accounts on a going concern basis**
The charity reported total unrestricted funds at the year end of £5,646 and has already secured a significant amount of funding for the current year.
The trustees are of the view that the immediate future of the charity for the next 12 months is secure and that on this basis the charity is a going concern.
The financial statements have been prepared on a going concern basis. The Trustees have reviewed and considered relevant information, including the annual budget and future cash flows in making their assessment. ## 3 **Receipts**
## 3.1 **Recognition of receipts**
Receipts are recognised when the charity has received the receipt.
## 3.2 **Grants and donations**
Income from government and other grants are recognised when the charity has received the funds.
## 3.3 **Fund accounting**
Unrestricted funds are available to spend on activities that further any of the purposes of the charity. Designated funds are unrestricted funds of the charity which the trustees have decided at their discretion to set aside to use for a specific purpose. Restricted funds are donations which the donor has specified are to be solely used for particular areas of the charity's work or for specific projects being undertaken by the charity.
## 4 **Payments and liabilities**
## 4.1 **Liability recognition**
Liabilities are recognised when it is more likely than not that there is a legal or constructive obligation committing the charity to pay out resources and the amount of the obligation can be measured with reasonable certainty.
## 4.2 **Charitable activities**
Payments on charitable activities includes the costs of promoting the relief of poverty in particular by providing humanitarian aid and disaster relief as well as other activities undertaken to further the purposes of the charity and their associated support costs. P18

## 4.3 **Governance and support costs**
Support costs have been allocated between governance cost and other support.
Governance costs comprise all costs involving public accountability of the charity and its compliance with regulation and good practice.
Support costs are those functions that assist the work of the charity but do not directly undertake charitable activities. Support costs include central functions and have been allocated to activity cost categories on a basis consistent with the use of resources.
## 4.4 **Liabilities**
The charity has liabilities which are measured at settlement amounts less any trade discounts.
## 4.5 **Provision for liabilities**
