Achievements and Performance

Summary of the main
achievements of the charity,
identifying the difference the
charity’s work has made to
the circumstances of its
beneficiaries and any wider
benefits to society as a
whole.
Long Furlong Badger Club has continued to provide a
valuable out of school childcare service to the parents and
carers of pupils at Long Furlong Primary School.
The club normally has 35 spaces available per session
most of which are taken up by regular contracts.
Parents/carers are also able to book ad hoc sessions
when required.
The charity has retained its high staff to child ratio, above
what is required by Ofsted, with 5 staff for most shifts.
The charity has continued to invest in improving the range
of equipment, entertainment, and activities available to the
children both indoor and outdoor, collaborating with the
school as appropriate.
At the beginning of the financial year, the charity had to
operate within the confines of government guidelines with
regards to Covid-19, requiring additional staff and working
hours to accommodate the staggered starting and
finishing time of the school day. This also meant that
children were unable to mix with other year groups and
access to some equipment was restricted. The staff
worked hard to ensure the quality of the care was not
affected and high standards of hygiene were maintained
to minimise the risk of spreading the virus.
As with the previous year, the clubs continued to operate
when required throughout the second Covid 19 lockdown
when the school was only open for those children of key
workers and vulnerable children. This was a vital service
for many parents/carers who were key workers throughout
this period.
The charity has also been committed to supporting and
retaining its staff during the second lockdown period by
utilising the Job Retention Scheme grants where
available. This was to ensure that we were able to provide
the children and families with experienced and familiar
staff during what has been a difficult period.
In June 2021, the charity had its first successful inspection
by Ofsted since becoming a registered charity and CIO.
As well as some very positive feedback regarding the
operation of the club, including important safeguarding
aspects, the outcome was that the club was meeting the
quality and standards of early years provision.

Financial Review

Review of the charity’s
financial position at the end
of the year.
All money the charity holds is unrestricted and is used to
further the aims of the charity. The charities expenditure
supports the objectives of the charity
Covid-19 continued to have an impact on the charity
during the start of the financial year. Despite the school
being initially open to all children in September, we
needed to reduce the availability of spaces in order to
manage the segregation of the year groups. Additional
staff costs were also incurred to cover extended session
times and ensure suitable supervision of the different
‘bubbles’ in accordance with the club’s and the school’s
Covid risk planning.
The second term saw another general school closure
resulting in the clubs being only available to children of
key workers or vulnerable children. Whilst the number of
children attending was greater than in the previous
lockdown period, income was still significantly affected.
However, the club was again able to utilise the job
retention scheme for fully furloughed staff and also staff
who were put on flexible furlough.
In addition, we incurred increased costs for cleaning
equipment and PPE in line with the club’s Covid 19 risk
assessment, based on the Department for Education
published guidance.
These costs, against a significantly reduced income from
sessions resulted in another loss in the financial year.
As a result, the charity again utilised some of its reserves
in this period but also reverted to previous, higher session
fee prices from 1 May 2021.
As with the previous year, staff pay was increased to align
to new minimum wage requirements.
Statement explaining the
policy for holding reserves
stating why they are held
We hold a reserve policy to ensure we establish a level of
reserves that is appropriate for our charity. The reserves
allow us to invest in the staff and equipment for the charity
as the needs arise. They are also reviewed on a regular
basis to consider whether our session pricing and
therefore value to our families is appropriate. In this
particular year, due to continued circumstances of the
Covid 19 pandemic, our reserves were regularly reviewed
as part of the charity’s planning for further potential school
closures and in particular in relation to the retention of
staff during this prolonged period.
We consider this demonstrates good stewardship and
active financial management in addition to demonstrating
the charity’s resilience and capacity to manage
unforeseen financial circumstances as it was again
required to do in this financial year.
