As each year goes by it becomes increasingty evident that the Henfield Shed is performing a useful.
much needed and important role in our local community. The year endlng December 2023 is no
different. The members su￿eY we conducted durfngthe year once agaln provided us wtth evidence
that the actlvltles ofThe SW are valued and appreciated by you. our membets. We a150 know from
the contlnual stream of projetts we are given ￿ the community land the re8ular offerings of biscuits
or ¢ake5 brought inl that the wvrk we do is of value and appreciated by members of the communlty.
Our experlment to open on Thursday momlngs proved not to be too popular, $0 the Trustees declded
after slx months of trlal to t105e on Thursdays. but to open regularfy on Saturday mornings, in
reco8nltlon that there are worklng members of the public who need the coMrad￿h1P and
frlendship5 which The Shed offers. This has proved to be suctsssful and Saturday momln8 se$51on5
are now an estsblished part of our offerlng.
Durlng the year we had 37 member5 and opened our workshop on 197 occasions. wlth 1229
members attending these sessions. This compares wlth openin8 on 165 occaslons In 2022 with 1205
attendees at these sessions. Durlng the year we made 142 items and repalred 79 Items for members
of the communlty and communlty groups Sn Henfield.
We completed the year with a surplus of £469 (£3353 In 20221 because of licence fees Irentsl on SD
Gallery) of £3204 and hlgher costs of elettrklty. Also, there were irbfrastructure costs In connection
wlth the Tanyard project amountlng to £1018 In the year. Overall, our donatlons from prolects
Increased from £6431 In 2022 to £8123 in 2023, demonstratlng the 5UPPQrt from the communlty and
the value we add to the vllla8e. We ended the year wlth £53,129 In the bank account compared with
£52,660 in 2022.
Our social activities contlnued with a barbecue for membets and their partners, once again held in
the fSeld of Tiffany Myatt and her husband. Colln. Our thanks and 8ratltude for their generoslty In
allowlng Lts to use their field and other facilkties. We also had a Shedders day out at the Tangmere
Military Aviation museum and attended the Haven Quiz on three occasions. winning once.
We partlclpated In the Henfleld Late nlght shopplng event and were honoured to be selected by the
Free Church as the beneficiary of thelr Christmas Tree fundrdisln8 event. Our thanks to everyone
there for their generositv.
The Trustees have been constsntly consclous of the fatt that our tenure at the rear of Southdown
Gallery Is temporary, and our search for a pemanent home has continued. Buoyed by the launth of
the Rural England Prospertty Fund early in 2023 lunderthetenns of which we would be eligible for a
substantial grant) and the feedback from a pre-planning advtce application. we decided to launch a
full application to develop the Tarryard Barn in Henfield as a permanent home.

meetlng In the vlllège. Feedback from thi5 meeting resulted in changes to our plans which were
submltted to Horsham Distrirt Council in September 2023.
For a small charity like the Henfield Shed the bureaucracy of the planning system became almost
Ove￿hel￿1ng. It involved us dealing with four different departments of Horsham Dlstrlct Council
(Planning. Economic Develokynert. Facilities. Legall over such Issues as water neutrality. proposals
for supply of elertricity and other services. plannin8 policles and p[arti￿, provision of flre salety
and access and pre-applylng for grants. In addition, had to attend multiple meetings wlth
Henfield Parish Councll. Its Plans Adv150ry Committee and the Joint Commons Mana8ement
Committee who are respon51ble for malntenance of the Tanyard Fleld.
The plannlng process also was expenslve, Involvlng a conslderable cost for puttlng In an application
as well as commlsslonln8 topographic surveys, ewlo8lcal survey5 and bat emergence suNeys. Our
archltect, Gavin Sargent provided a professional service on a pro bono basis.
A5 of the end of the year. the plannlng process had not yielded a definitive decislon from Horsham
Distrlct Council who should have detemiined this appllcatlon befo￿ the end of Ortober 2023. All our
efforts to overcome the bureaucracy seemed to be of no wail.
Durlng thls process, Malcolm Eastwood, fornier Chairynan of Henfleld Parlsh Councll, recently elected
Councillor representin8 Henfleld on Horsham Distrirt Councll and keen sUPPQrter and mentor of The
Henfleld Shed passed away. We extend our slncere condolen￿$ to h15 wlfe Carol and hls famlly on
thelr sad loss.
As of July 2024, the declslon15 Stlll not forthcomlng and dlscu551ons are now tskln8 place to attempt
to recover from Horsham Dlstrlct Councll the costs we have Incurred as It seem5 unllkely that they
wlll determlne In our favour. desplte thelr earller encourd8ement to enga8e in the plannlng process.
At the same tlme the Trustees of the fund which th¥ns Southdown Gallerie5 and its assoclated
buildings have decided to liquidate the fund and we have been reqUI￿d to move out of our tuf￿nt
premlses. Thanksto our appeal on soclal media. a generous resident of Small Dole hos offe￿d us
premises on hls land for the next two years and as this report is bein8 written. a huge amount of
effort Is golng on to effert a move to a new IK*me.
As we write this report our thoughts and condolences go to Pete and Jane Gumbrell and their famlty
on the death of Jane's mother. Durlng the year we also lost one of our members, JIM Smith due to
sudden illness. HIS carpentry sk151s. help and guIdan￿ a￿ mlssed by all.
The Trustees are thankful for the generous tlme. effort and expertise of all of our members In all
manner of ways in keeplng the Henfield Shed all¥e arKI attlye. We look forward to operatlng from
our new premises In the near future.

Treasurerfs Report for year endlng 31.12.2023
l. Copies of the profit and loss account for the year and balaTh￿ sheet are attached.
2. The accounts are held on my personal computer and I have my own back up. Neville
has the software on his computer. I should be downloadlng a copy of the accounts
each month onto a USB stick for hlm to hold, to minimise the rlsk of the account5
being accidentally lost but this has not been happenlng recently. Security of the
accounts Is a blt of a concern. but the trustees have printed copies of the previous
yearfs account5 and quarterly accounts in the current year and It should be posslble
to reconstruct a current yearfs accounts from the bank statement. Pete Gumbrell
doe5 detailed monthly summaries which are on his computer.
3. Notesto the accounts
The bank balance at year end was £53,045.67. Pete wa5 holding
£83.61 Sn cash makln8 a total of £53,129.28. The reser4es were increased
to £SO,(xKI durin8 the year. out of whlch £1108 was spent on plannlng
costs for the Tannery barn leavlng a reserve balante of £48,982.
