Solon Community Hub

– Annual Report for March 2021 April 2022

Welcome to the Annual Report for Solon Community (aka as The Hub).

As the life returns to a new ‘normal’ after the pandemic, activity at the Solon Community Hub remains quiet since restrictions have been lifted, residents and the local community have been slow to return and with the cost of living crisis setting in and having an even greater impact on the community and society at large; the Hub is needed more than ever.

The number of volunteers that are willing to support the hub and run activities has diminished and there is currently one volunteer who continues to manage the hub and do what they can to ensure that it is opened every week day for a few hours each day.

Geoff, a beloved member of the Community and resident gardener, sadly passed away in May 2021, the Solon Community Hub held a Funday in his memory in May 2022. This was well attended and showed that the Hub is still very much needed.

The Hub continues to be hired out and several parties and celebrations have taken place during the Summer of 2022. There is a children’s playground attached to the hub, which is a key draw for parties, along with the catering facilities within the hub.

The playground is regularly used by the children in the area, so the Trustees and residents endeavour to keep it as clean and safe as possible, making sure that anti-social behaviour is prohibited.

The plan for the future is to reinvigorate the community and encourage residents and the wider community to return to the Hub, revive friendships and bring the community together.

The coffee mornings have been the first step to encouraging the residents and the wider community back to the Hub. There will also be a social evening planned to bring the community together.

The Trustees had an informal discussion about setting up a food bank and joining forces with local businesses to support the community. At the current time this is still an idea, but as the cost of living crisis deepens and residents and the local community struggle financially this idea needs to become a reality.

Residents will be canvassed to find out what they need and what they would like to see going on at the Hub. This will help shape the development of the Hub.

The time has come to bring Solon Community Hub back to the community reinvigorate activities, welcome the residents back and show them that we are here for them.
