Nov 2024 AGM of Sutton Walls Conservation Group 5[th]
This year we have completed the work funded by Historic England for the ongoing maintenance of the East Entrance. Challenges haven been getting the contractors to attend the site in the time frames we needed. This was achieved by the stalwart work of Mrs Keating and has built us a good rapport with CRC.
Other challenges were completing the Herefordshire Community Foundation project with a contribution from Sutton St Nicholas Parish Council for the installation of the information board on the Concrete pad at the top of Busy Hill and the interpretation panel by the East Entrance.
With problems with the weather, access to the site, availability of the archaeologist, transporting the cement and water and the schedule monument consent it all got done. Again, thanks to the team and especially Chris Thomas who did all the liaison with the panel producers and templates for the siting of the panels.
This year we started on our Woodland Management Plan which has been picked up by a volunteer committee member, Tony Bramley, which will help us with future funding and a 10 year plan for the management of the walls. Again, we express our thanks to Tony.
Its has been unfortunate that this last year we had terrible weather and soggy paths which didn’t allow us to do the activities we wanted to do and then by midsummer the southern paths to the walls were practically unpassable and we have repeatedly lobbied the Sutton St Nicholas Parish Council and the County Council who are responsible for keeping foot paths clear but if there are no funds available, the work is not able to be done. This discussion is ongoing with both parties to seek a solution going forward.
