SORP
referenc
e
Summary of the Para To promote social inclusion for the public benefit by
1.17
purposes of the charity preventing people, particularly but not exclusively,
as set out in its men aged 18 or over within Christchurch (Dorset) and
governing document surrounding area, from becoming socially excluded,
endeavouring to relieve their needs and assisting
them to integrate into society through the provision
of facilities in which they can meet and jointly or
individually undertake creative, physical or
recreational activities, learn or pass on skills and
knowledge, and support each other emotionally. For
the purposes of this clause, "socially excluded" means
being excluded from society, or parts of society, as a
result of one or more of the following factors:
unemployment; financial hardship; youth or old age;
ill health (physical or mental).
Summary of the main Para We currently have 35 members and operate from a
1.17 and
activities in relation to 1.19 refurbished former “School Hall” in the heart of
those purposes for the Highcliffe, Dorset.
public benefit, in
particular, the activities, Currently, we open our doors three mornings per
projects or services
week. This may be increased to five, depending on
identified in the demand.
accounts.
We also organise ad hoc social events, such as a
BBQs, skittles meetings, for members and partners.
We have encouraged groups of our members to take
part in community activities, e.g. installing bench
seating in and around Highcliffe village, having a stall
at the Highcliffe Summer event,
We have a workshop equipped for wood and metal
working that enables members to use the workshop
for hobbies or individual or group projects that may
include those for the local community, or to simply
meet up with fellow members for a chat.
**----- End of picture text -----**
Statement confirming Para The Trustees confirm they understand the guidance
1.18
whether the trustees relating to public benefit.
have had regard to the We believe there is a need for our organisation. The
guidance issued by the area surrounding Christchurch in Dorset has one of
Charity Commission on
the highest proportions of retired people in England.
public benefit
Our target membership is aimed at particularly, but
not exclusively, retired men in the area who are
generally recognised as more prone to loneliness and
isolation and resultant depression. They are also more
likely to lead sedentary lives that can lead to lack of
fitness, obesity and related medical conditions. Being
isolated, they are less likely to take action regarding,
or even be aware of, any health issues they may have.
Through the use of our facilities, our beneficiaries are
able to meet with others and avoid social isolation.
They are able to use tools and resources to work on
their own hobbies or community-based projects. They
are able to share skills and learn new ones. It helps
them stay active and have a sense of purpose and
generally improve the quality of their lives.
Furthermore, because they are amongst their
contemporaries, they are more likely to discuss
personal health and social issues and gain
encouragement from fellow members.
It is often quoted that "Men don't talk face to face,
they talk shoulder to shoulder"
As we endeavour to overcome these issues, we
believe we will give a real benefit to the local
community as a whole as there will be less drain on
the local health and social providers.
When possible, we submit applications to local grant
providers, seeking cash injections to assist in the
successful running of our Charity.
**----- End of picture text -----**
## **Achievements and Performance**

**----- Start of picture text -----**
SORP
referenc
e
Summary of the main The objectives that support our key purpose are:
achievements of the 1. Promote social inclusion and well-being through
charity, identifying the Para friendships and social interaction within the group;
difference the charity’s 1.20 2. Provide opportunities for members to share, and
work has made to the
learn new skills;
circumstances of its
3. Build relationships with groups and individuals in
beneficiaries and any
the local community that allows us to achieve our
wider benefits to society
aims;
as a whole.
4.Provide a permanent base for our Men’s Shed.
Achievements against our objectives:
1. As previously stated we provide a
premises/workshop space where primarily older men
can attend on weekdays and engage in woodworking
and other activities. They undertake small personal
projects or other, larger projects for local groups and
charities.
Our Shed has 35 members at present of which 15-20
attend our social gatherings and/or monthly group
lunches. Members are also invited to visit and meet
members of other Sheds at the SMSN quarterly
meetings. Anecdotal evidence we have gathered from
within the group shows our members benefit from the
social activity and interactions with others. Some
members of the group have formed friendships and
meet outside of our Shed’s activities.
2. Our members come from a wide range of
professions and trades. Various members have given
presentations about skills such as accurate measuring
and marking up, and tool sharpening. Others have
sought and gained advice about IT.
**----- End of picture text -----**
3. As mentioned above, we have undertaken projects for a number of local community groups. 4.Our workshop in The Lower Hall of The Old Schoolhouse (being our Landlord, Highcliffe Residents Association Community Interest Company’s premises) has been operating successfully for some fifteen months and continues to be equipped with additional tools and machinery. Members use the workshop fora number of hobbies and community projects. We are very fortunate that we are regularly offered old tools and equipment from, for example, widows who wish to dispose of their late husband’s tools.
