## **TRUSTEES' ANNUAL REPORT FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31ST DECEMBER 2020** 

The Trustees present their report along with the financial statements of the Trust for the year ending 31st December 2020. The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with the accounting policies set out in the notes to the accounts and comply with the charity’s governing document, the Charities Act 2011 and Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Depositing Standard for Smaller Entities published 16 July 2014. 

## **STRUCTURE, GOVERNANCE AND MANAGEMENT** 

Isle of Wight Pride is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (Charity number 1175094) established in October 2017. This was a formalisation of a previous not for profit group which had been formed in 2016 as a direct result of a vigil which was held in Newport, Isle of Wight to mark the tragic shootings at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Florida. The not for profit group then successfully staged the first Isle of Wight Pride in July 2017 which was attended by 4999 people and in 2018 hosted UK Pride with an estimated attendance of 12,000 people. The not for profit group donated their surplus to the new CIO in October 2017. 

As a membership organisation, the work of Isle of Wight Pride is overseen by a Committee of Trustees who, together with a larger group of volunteers are known collectively as Team Pride. Team Pride delivers our cause and objectives and form our core membership with voting rights. In addition, we have an informal membership category for supporters who do not have voting rights, we have yet to instigate this optional membership category. 

Our constitution sets out in detail the mechanism for membership (with voting rights) and election of Trustees. 

We have no paid officers. Isle of Wight Pride is fully run and managed by volunteers.

## **OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES OF ISLE OF WIGHT PRIDE** 

As set out in our constitution, the objects of Isle of Wight Pride are as follows: 

To promote equality and diversity for the public benefit and in particular, the elimination of discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation and gender identity of those living in the Isle of Wight (the area of interest) by: 

a) Raising awareness of the public about the issues and difficulties affecting the lives of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBTQI) people; 

b) Cultivating sentiment in favour of equality and diversity and in particular, through celebrating the diversity of the LGBTQI community; 

c) Staging an annual LGBTQI festival and smaller events throughout the area 

d) Such other objects as are charitable under the laws of England and Wales as the trustees shall in their absolute discretion determine. 

## **ACHIEVEMENTS AND PERFORMANCE 2020** 

2020 started with much enthusiasm for the year ahead.  Having managed to stage an event in 2019 with all the challenges outlined in the previous report, we had the vision to return in July with a larger event:  bigger Parade, larger community village and what everyone wanted; a return to the beach for the entertainment and audience of up to 4,999 to avoid the additional challenges and costs of the Isle of Wight Act. 

Little did we know in January that come March we would be plunged into lockdown and a global pandemic.  Meeting in public, gathering and events had a total stop on them. 

This had a massive impact on IW Pride and as a result this report will be considerably shorter than in previous years. 

January started well, we had launched “Early Bird” tickets for IW Pride due to take place on 18 July 2020 just before Christmas and sales were steady up to the end of the month when the offer finished. 

Productive meetings took place with sponsors and arrangements started to fall into place, including the booking of headline artist for July. 

IW Pride continued to interact with the community, and we held one of our popular social events in February. 

In March COVID 19 hit resulting in a total lockdown and it became almost impossible to function in a physical sense. 

At the end of the month, following conversations via Zoom with key players, we took the very difficult decision, with so much uncertainty for the future of events, to cancel the parade, community village and beach party. 

We issued the following statement which explains our reasons, which ranged to protecting the public and our volunteers to protecting the financial assets of the Charity. 



_Statement regarding Isle of Wight Pride 2020_ 

_The Trustees of Isle of Wight Pride have been monitoring the current unprecedented situation with the Coronavirus pandemic. Following on from Government advice and the unparalleled times we find ourselves in, we feel we can no longer carry on with IW Pride this year on 18 July 2020._ 

_We need to put the safety and wellbeing of our communities the wider public and our valued volunteers first. This decision is not one we have taken lightly as we had big plans, including returning to the beach, it is a huge disappointment to us all._ 

_We have also considered how the crisis has affected many of our local sponsors some of whom rely heavily on tourism and are now facing very uncertain times. The situation regarding events in July is unknown. However, with the lockdown in place and essential instruction to people to stay at home and only travel if necessary, it makes it near impossible to plan and prepare for our event over the next couple of months._ 

_As a Charity we also have to consider the risk to us of investing money in planning for an event which may not be able to take place and that this could result in significant debt and perhaps loss of the charity and the event itself in future years. IW Pride would like to thank everyone who has bought tickets through Outsavvy._

Refunds were issued to the early bird ticket holders, and from then we continued to interact with the community via social media and kept in touch with volunteers via Zoom. 

On 18 July, as some restrictions had eased, in conjunction with Hovertravel, our lead sponsor, we did a Facebook live event with Miss Jason, one of our patrons, for “Save the date for 2021”. 

However, as the year progressed, we found ourselves in and out of various lockdowns and restrictions which made it still difficult to return to previous activities.  We also found a very understandable and respected reluctance for people to resume meeting up.  Gatherings for most the year remained restricted.  A number occurred via Zoom. 

The trustees continued to work ensuring that essential administration was carried out and that the charity continued to function. 

As the year came to an end optimism for the following year started to disappear with another full lockdown over Christmas and a wish that matters would ease in the new year to allow work to resume on an event in 2021.
