Shed struciure and activrbes
The Men's Shed atms to mitigate these problems of social isolation by provitlingworkshops and
meeting spaces where Members can pursue craft and soctal artivities within the Shed community
whilst also serving the local community. Members can pursue their own projects bLrt some also
make goods or repair donated goods and furniture. often from re-cycled materials, which are sold
to the local community at modest pri￿. This helps to defray the running costs and also meet a
local community need in one of the rftost deprived areas of the country.
Currently we rent premise5 at 20 Manhattan Garden5 next to Ore Cornmunity Centre. ThouBh old
and in need of refurbishment the building provides Èood facilities with fully equÉpped wood and
metalwork workshops at one end and a social a￿3 at the other. Some repairs have been carried
out by the membershlp during the year including weatherproofingthe building and ￿p1aCIng the
failing lightinÈ In the main workshop. but there remain5 a substantlal amourrt to do.
Mernbership has increased to 118 over the last year and ranges from the able-bodied to the
vulnerable includin& for example. people with Autism. and some Dementla sufferers who can
attend with Ca￿lS rf necessary.
The Shed is nornially open for three arÈd haWday5 per week with at least one volunteer Trustee in
attendance at all times. There is a modest £5 fee to become a Member and a charge of £2 per day
attended.
The￿ are currently r￿e volunteerTrustees. elected bythe Members, who manage the day-ttsday
operation of the Shed.
Communlty support and social value
We believe our Shed adds social value to the communtty in a number of ways..
the Member5 themselves benefit from having a productive artivity and engaging with
community, thus reducing social i501ation ènd depression and facilitating better ¢ognittve
functioning and improved mental wellbeing. This in turn has an effect in reducing social care costs,.
where they have theEn, members families and/or carer5 benefrt from the relief given by having
a secure and caring environmentwhere the member5 can spend ttme produrtively,.
the local community benefits from having a Iow-COSt Source for Craft items and repair5.
We know we have an impèct on the families of our members as well as our members themselve5.,

Tntstees. annual report
for the ygar gnded 30 Septernber 2022 - Gont'd
The Impart of the Pandemic
The pandemic has had a dramatic detrimental impart on the Sheds artivities and its membership
in three ways=
Covid contributed to the death of several members..
restrictions on the levels of service that We￿ able to be provided and opening hours;
Members increasing concerns about beirE in contartwith other people because of the risk of
infection and stopping attending,"
removing tts finanual independence.
The Shed was required to close completely durin8 the lockdown and for a short period at the
end of 2021 when no Members could attend. Some communication was retained by
eorre5wndence with all Mernbers and bytelephone wtth the most vulnerable. The Shed was made
'Covid Secure. and PBrtlal￿ re-opened but that required hjrther rè5trictin8 numbers
attending. Despite increasing membership, attendance at the Shed reduced during the Pandemic
due to some Members and Trustees having to shield and others avoiding attending due to concerns
about rising infettion levels in the area and the need to reduce contact with other people.
The Shed re-opened fully dijring the year and attendance is plthng up again, though still below
peak pre-covid levels.
The closing of the Shed resulted in an aIrn¢￿ total loss of the Shed's income and the reduction in
attendan￿ caused a further substantial loss which could have led to the Shed's pemanent closure.
Fortunately, however. the Shèd wa5 able to negotiate a reduced rent and was awarded a number
of small. but much appreciate(l. grants which @ave it financial securitythrough the Pandemit arbd
facilitated re-opening.
Progress duririg the year
Good progress has been made during the year In reviving the Sherfs main attNities. Progress has
3150 been Tnade towards achieving financial Independen￿ in thatthe Shed now has a designated
fund of £25,IXKltow3rds the purchase 3 building through a combination of fundraisinB and grant
awards. A detailed work specification and costing h35 been prepared for the purchase, repair and
refurbishmènt of building that we currently rent and fijrthergrant support is being sought.

Future developments
The shed now has three aims forthe next year or two..
to secure its financial future. OrI￿nallY the ShÈd was large1yfinancia1￿ independent meetirvd

Independence and securfty by fundralsin8 to purchase the building that It currently rents and thus
lowering Its running costs significantly to within its income. or by re-lo¢atin8 to cheaper premises if
any can be found..
to raise the confidence of the membership so that theyfeel able to return to the Shed,.
to increase the range of actNities of the Shed to interest a larger number of potential Members.
The Shed building has surroundinB 8rounds with potentlal to be developed as a garden wSth a view
