Hastings and st Lèonards Men's Shed was set up in Ortober 2016 by representstives of Ore
Valley Big Lo¢al which was administered by Orbit Housing ￿SocIation, now Hastings Voluntary
Action. The Shed is aimed primarily at older men (thought there are also lady members), a
group traditionally under represented in communityand social activities. Loneliness. isolation
and depression are high risk factors for this group.
The health impact of loneliness has been dfxumented bythe Campaigrs to end Loneliness,
whose report in 2015 shows that lacking social connections is as damaging to o¥Jr health as
smoklng 15 Cigarettes a day. Social networks and friendships not only have an impa¢t on
reducing the risk of mortalty or developire certain diseases. but they also help individuals to
recover when they dD fall ill.The report showed that
IPA of older people are in contact wlth family. friend5 and nevghbours less than 0￿e

Over half151%1 of all people aged 75 and over live alone.

Shed structure and actfvltles
The Men's Shed aims to mitigate these problems of social isdation by providing workshops and
meeting spaces where Members can pursue craft and social artiwties wthin the Shed communtty
whilst a150 serving the lo¢al community. Member5 can pursue their own projects but some also
make goods or repair donated goods and fumlture, often from rewled materiats. which are sold
to the local cr)mmunity at modest prlce. This helps to defray the running ¢0sts and also meet a local
Community need in one of the most deprived areas of the country.
Currently we rent premises at 20 Manhattan Gardens next to Ore Community Centre. Though old
and in need of refurbishment the building provides good tdcilities with fully equipped wood and
metslwork workshops at one end a￿1 a soaal area at the other. Minor repalrs have been carried
out by the membership during the yearto weatherprTh)f the bulkling but there remains a
substantial amount to do.
Membership has Increas￿ to 108 over the lastyear and ranges from the able-bodled to the
vulnerable including, for example, people Autism. 9)me Dementia sufferers who can
attend wlth carers if neossary.
The Shed is normally open for three and half days per week with at least one volunteer Trustee in
attendance at all times. There is a modest £5 fee to become a Member and a tharge of£2 per day
attended.
There are currently four volunteer Trustees, elerted by the Members. who manage the day404ay
operation of the Shed.
Ihe impart of the Pandemic
The pandemic has had a dramatic detrimental impatt ¢)n the Shed's artivities and its membership in
three ways..
restrictions on the levels of service that were able to be provided and opening hours-
Members increasing concems about being in contact with other people because of the risk of
infection and stopping attending;
removlng its finanaal Independen￿.
The Shed was required to close Completely during the flrst lockdown and for a short period at the
end of 2021 when no Members could attend. Some communication was retsined by
eorrespondence wth all Members ar￿ by telephone wrth the mst vulnerable. The Shed was made
'Cowd Secure, and partially re-opened but that required further restricting numbets

Despite increaslng membership, atteTrdan￿ at the Shed reduced durlng the Pandemic due to some
Members and Trustees having to shield and others avoiding attending due to concerns about rising
nfection levels in the area and the need to reduce ¢x)ntact wtth other people.
The c105ing of the Shed resulted in an almost total loss of the Shed's income and the reduction in
attendance caused a further substantial1055 which could have led to the Shed's permanent closure.
FortunateW, however, the Shed was able to negotiate a reduced rent and Wds awarded a number of
small, but much appreclated, grants which gave it financial security through the Pandemic.
Future devek>pments
The shed now has three aims for the next year or two-.
to secure Its financial future. Originally the Shed was targely financially independent meeting
most of rcs running costs from attendance f￿S and sales. The aim now is to return to that finan¢lal
independence and se¢urity by fundralslng to purchase the building that it currently rents and thus
lowering its running costs significantly to within its income, or by re-locatlng to cheaper premises if
any Can be found;
to raise the confidence of the membership $0 that they feel able to return to the Shed slnce
restrictions have been removed and most of the membership has been fullyvaccinated;
to increase the tange of activities of the Shed to interest a larger number of potential Members.
The Shed building has surrounding grounds wlth potentlal to be developed as a garden with a view
to offering gardening as a new actNity and an outdcorspace for leisure.
Communltysupportand ￿da1 value
We believe our Shed adds social value to the community in a number of way5".
the Members themselves benefit from havirg a productNe activty and engaging with
community, thus reducing s¢xial i501ation and depression and facilitating better cognitive funcuoning
and improved mentsl wellbeing. This in tum has an effect in reducing social care costs-
where they have them. members families and/or carers benefit from the relief given by having
secure and caring environment where the members can spend time productlvely;
the local commtjnity benefits from havir4 a Iow-COSt source fof craft ilems and repairs.
We know we have an impatt on the families of our rrEmbers as well as our members themselves.,
