To advance the education of the public in the art of music with particular reference to opera for the benefit of mankind **Summary of the objects of the charity set out in its governing document** Opera dei Lumi exists to champion works, both well-known and obscure, of the Enlightenment (or Long Eighteenth-Century) by exploring their fit within the cultures of their time and representing, reaffirming and refreshing this sociological perspective in today's world. Opera dei Lumi makes a positive impact by bringing quality performances of eighteenth-century repertoire to a range of communities, often those culturally underserved (we have a long-standing association with Berwick-upon-Tweed and the Scottish Borders, for example). We also provide professional performance opportunities for emerging young **Summary of the main** artists. **activities undertaken for the public benefit in relation to** Opera dei Lumi’s niche is in specialising in eighteenth-century operatic **these objects (include within** repertoire and Mozart in particular, something which not many other **this section the statutory** opera groups do. It is justified on the grounds that such specialism is rare **declaration that trustees have** and essentially does not exist outside of London, despite the resulting **had regard to the guidance** output yielding such unique qualities in performance. **issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit)**

## Section D                      Achievements and erformance p

In August 2022, Opera dei Lumi once again returned to St James and St **Summary of the main** Basil’s Church in Newcastle and the Edinburgh Festivals Fringe (our first **achievements of the charity** appearance there since 2018) performing at Canongate Kirk. **during the year**

Breaking with our programming style in recent years, which have offered a ‘snapshot in time’ style programme, this project aimed to bring together some of the influential figures in Mozart’s musical development. This featured music by Joseph Haydn (Symphony 52) and his lesser known brother Michael Haydn (Symphony 25), and lesser known London-based German composer Carl Friedrich Abel (Symphony Op. 7 No. 6).

Common thread between each of these composers is that they each wrote music which, at various points since Mozart’s death, have been (wrongly) attributed to Mozart. Partnered with these pieces was Mozart’s own double concerto for violin, viola and orchestra (Sinfonia concertante).

In addition to moving away from our recent programming style, this was Opera dei Lumi’s first performance project not to feature singing.

We were delighted to feature Michelle Dierx (violin) and Edward Keenan (viola) as soloists, both having previously worked with Opera dei Lumi, and both of whom led their sections in the orchestra for the evening.

We welcomed a number of new musicians to our orchestra, forging excellent working relationships, as well as enjoying the return of a number of regular collaborators. These included: oboists Isabel Kent and Anna Seaton; horn players Christopher Griffiths and Guy Llewellyn; violinists Michelle Dierx, Ilhem Ben Khalfa, Angus Bain, Simon-Philippe Allard, Anna Tulchinskaya, Alex Casson and Sonja Tuomela; violists Edward Keenan, Theodore Chung Lei and Taddeus Chung; violoncellists Deborah Thorne and Lucy Hoile; double bassist Gwen Reed; and harpsichordist Sean Heath.

We were pleased to have the evening in Edinburgh filmed and recorded by Hedd Morfett-Jones.

## **Section E                    Financial review**

It is the policy of the charity to try to build up unrestricted funds, which are **Brief statement of the** free reserves of the charity, to a level that equates to 3 to 6 months **charity’s policy on reserves** unrestricted expenditure. This will prove sufficient funds to cover management and administration support costs and any emergencies that may arise time to time.

**Details of any funds materially** No such funds **in deficit**

## **Further financial review details (Optional information)**

You **may choose** to include additional information, where relevant about:

- the charity’s principal sources of funds (including any fundraising);

- how expenditure has supported the key objectives of the charity;

- investment policy and objectives including any ethical investment policy adopted.

## **Section F Other optional information**

## **Support**

We are hugely grateful to funders Tony Trapp, the Henfrey Charitable Trust and Kate Donaghy for their continued support of Opera dei Lumi’s endeavours. We are proud to acknowledge their generosity and their shared ambition for Opera dei Lumi’s artistic vision.

We also acknowledge with thanks all those who have supported Opera dei Lumi through our Amici del secolo dei Lumi programme.

## **Future plans**

We are excited to look towards new and exciting performance projects in 2023 and beyond, and are exploring programming a concert in celebration of the Coronation, as well as potentially returning to a _Messiah_ in the winter.
