Lucy's UK Oonkey Foun'datlon March 2022 REPORT OF THE TRUSTEES The Committee presents its report and the financial statements for the period ended 31 March 2022. LEGAL AND ADMINISTRATIVE The Charity is a Charitable Incorporated Organisatlon governed by a Foundation Model Constitution dated 3 October 2017. The Charity is registered with the Charity Commission under registration number 1174959. PRINCIPLE AcfiviTIES AND OBJECTIVES To promote a humane behaviour towards animals by providing appropriate care, protection, treatment, and security for animals which are in need of care and attention by reason of sickness, maltreatment, poor circumstances or ill usage and to educate the public in matters pertaining to animal welfare in general and the prevention of cruelty and suffering among animals by the support of the charitable work of Lucy's Sanctuary for Holy Land Donkeys. ORGANISATION The Charity is run by the trustees, helped by volunteers all of whom are unpaid. The charity financially directly supports a donkey sanctuary in Israel (Lucy's Sanctuary for Holy Land Donkey51 which is a separate charity registered in Israel. It pays for the upkeep of the animals and the premises as well as partly financing a volunteer/part time worker who has accommodation, on site at the sanctuary as part of their package. In addition it pays Lucy Fensom's husband Adi Zahor, to act as the manager of the sanctuary. He is paid by the charity via an agency in order to comply with Israeli law. The charity has since February 2022 engaged a second volunteerlpart-time worker who also has accommodation on site. This enables there to be somebody on site most of the time. The Trustees WOLtld whole heartedly like to thank Lucy Fensom and her volunteers for the huge amount of incredibly backbreaking, exhausting work they do day and often night. The work is both physically and emotionally exhausting and can only be described as dedicated labour of love devotion and compassion. Apart from the first charity trustees, every trustee must be appointed by resolution passed at a properly convened meeting of the charity trustees.
Lucy's UK Dtsiikey Foiindatlon rch 2022 The charity tries to keep costs to a minimum, and so has no physical office, but relies on trustees and volunteers to fulfil certain roles and they contribute to many of the costs themselves. This means that with minimal costs 97% of the money raised goes to support the sanctuary and outreach work directly. The 3% is for mandatory costs such as insurance, regulator/independent examiner fees and website costs. REVIEW OF ACTIVITIES 6eneml Currently we are supporting the care of 53 donkeys 22 female and 31 male, 2 male horses, 2 dogs and 8 cats at the sanctuary. General everyday sanctuary costs on average (using an average exchange rate of 4.34 ILS to GBP) are as follows.. Food (hay and oats) - £2.437 per month Rent- £671 per month Water and electricity- £214 per month Sawdust for bedding- £860 per month Avera e Total of £4 182 er month Throughout the year, the onsite volunteer5 were paid £5,829 and Adi Zahor, the manager, was paid £10,218. New Re5cue5 Token in ot Sanrtua Little Joey was injured when he was Struck by a car whilst running beside his mother who was pulling a cart. His injury meant that he could no longer run and was left by the roadside to fend for himself. Costration O rotlons Joey the donkey received castration surgery. Euthan051Q Sadly, Prince the horse's health deteriorated. and he had to be euthanised. Wormln Medlcine ond Vocdnotion5 Sonctut7ry.' Worming for 63 animals at the sanctuary every 4 months.
Lucy's UK Donkey Foundatlon March 2022 Outreach.. Dr Nour the specialist vet, and his assistant, held ten outreach clinics during the year in Palestinian villages. Typical activitie5 included worminE, treating injuries and oedema, giving anti parasitic, antibiotics and lancing and draining abscesses. Nose chain covers made by volunteers in the charity and sent out to Israel were given out to put around the animal's noses. Owners were encouraged in ways to better care for their animals. Sadly, and distressingly, Dr Nour has reported that the numbers of animals attending these clinics has declined and he fears that the growing trade in animal hides may be the reason behind that decline. The 10 outreach clinics cost £1930. 5onrtua Veterino rntions Eyes are routinely cleaned, and anti-fly ointment put on, legs are routinely sprayed with anti-fly ointment and all animals are routinely groomed. Donkeys Sika, Leah, Alan, Katy, Jeremiah, Poppy are being closely monitored due to their fragile health and are on a special diet. The vet was called out 4 times durillg the year at a cost of £543
Lucy's UK Donkey Foundatlon March 2022 Forrler 56 animals were farriered in October 2021 and February 2022 at a cost of £2096. Forthcomln Issue5 A number of issues need to be addressed as the financial situation improve5: Adi is facing an operation that will mean his activities will be curtailed. There is an urgent need to review the worker situation and, if possible, to employ a full-time sanctuary manager. The electrics need upgrading to enable new donkey feeders to be made to stop food waste due to the weather or the donkeys trampling on it. The fencing needs repairing. Much of this forthcoming activity will depend on the landlord which wlll take careful negotiation. There is a desperate need for new trustees as several have left and two longstanding faithful trustees Heather Fensom and Lily Beasley need to step dowTI due to health and family issues. There is a desperate need to link with other charities to try to counter the fact that donkeys are now highly sought after for their skin and are in jeopardy. Fundraisin There are several means by which funds are raised. The website has access to Pay Pal, Go Fund Me and Give as You Live. A lot of supporters give directly through standing orders to the charity bank account. Many gifts are gift-aided to raise extra funds. Some volunteers also fundraise by having a stall in their local area. The charity produces a quarterly newsletter whlch is paid for privately by volunteers and highlights the needs of the sanctuary as they occur. We are very grateful for those supporters who regularly give as well as those who have made much bigger one-off donations, often in response5 to urgent need. Finunclal Review Net incoming resources for the period amounted to £15,49012021: £16.2891 as shown on page 8 of the financial statements. All of the charity's assets are held in the furtherance of the charity's objectives and are adequate and sufficient to meet the charity's needs.
Lu¢y'5 UK Donkey Foundatlon March 2022 Reserves olic It is a policy of the charity to maintain unrestricted funds, that is the free reserves of the charity at a level that will enable the charity to continue its operations while it looks for alternative funding if it suffers a significant reduction in income. Rlsk Mttna ement The Committee has identified the major risks to which the charity is exposed and has produced a Risk Assessment policy to put systems into place to mitigate those risks. This policy will be regularly reviewed by the trustees and updated when necessary.
