HOUNSLOW MUTHTHAMIL PALLI

ANNUAL REPORT of the Trustees and Financial Statements Year ended 31 August 2021 Message from the Chairperson: Mrs Thangeswary Gengadharan | present this Annual Report of the Hounslow Muththamil Palli (Hounslow Thamil School) since its acceptance onto the Register of Charities for England and Wales (Charity Number 1174948). Our aim is to promote, provide and advance education in the language, literature, culture, music and fine arts of the Tamil Community to the public in Hounslow and its surrounding boroughs. The organisation is committed to achieving this by, but not exclusively, providing premises, educational materials, teachers, lecturers, equipment, instruments, performances, examinations, competitions and/or funds. Since starting our school in September 2014, enabled by the commitment and support of all the teachers, parents and students, we have made good progress in continuing to fulfil our stated charitable aims. At the end of the 2021 financial year net student numbers have remained static at 185. All these students are being taught Thamil in one of the Grades from Nursery level to Grade 12. As usual, a majority of these students have also taken advantage of learning or being introduced to at least one, if not two, of the extra music and art lessons we provide. Since our inauguration we have provided Bharatha-Natyam dance and Carnatic Keyboard, Violin and Vocaiclasses. Our fee structure (£50 per student per term) continues to remain unchanged since 2014 with no fees being charged for more than two siblings per family. The profit and loss submission demonstrates that this is a reasonable charge. We continue to follow the Tamil Education & Development Committee (TEDC) syllabus from Grades Nursery to 42. To this end our teachers continue to dedicate a lot of personal time to their own self-development by attending TEDC’s teacher-training courses and several one-day workshops. While we have not had any safe-guarding, health and safety issue to date, we have adopted a preventative approach. As these courses proved to be of great interest. We hope to run these courses for interested parents in the future. While the Featherstone High Schoo! (FHS) premises was closed through the Summer term 2020 it was re-opened in September 2020 after an extensive Covid-Safe refurbishment. HMP conducted a thorough Risk Assessment which was undertaken independently but also jointly in collaboration with FHS. The Risk mitigation and management was in line with government guidelines and proved effective. There were no incidents requiring contact tracing although records and measures were in place. Education, training and documentation of Covid-safe procedures was provided to all students and parents. This was supported by extra cleaning of the facilities which was contracted to FHS. Personal hand hygiene dispensers were provided before entering the school and in the class rooms. Everyone wore masks and kept prevailing safe distancing guidelines. The TEDC annual graded exams in Listening, Speaking,Reading and Writing in our region has been entrusted to the HMP for the past few years. To decide if students could progress from the previous grade to the next, exams which were suspended due to the Covid crisis were replaced by teacher assessments. A continued silent but fervent partner through all our efforts is the Featherstone High School, which has been a pillar of strength by agreeing promptly to all our requests and working with us with patience and diligence. We are very fortunate to have such a supportive management team led by Shahbaz Haider and Taylor Panesar in Finance and the FHS Caretakers. It is important that we understand how lucky we are to have such nice facilities and the conveniences that it affords our community. Structure, Governance and Management of HMP has not changed since registration as a charitable enterprise. It has met regularly to discuss teaching, student progress, health and safety, security, safeguarding and its finances during the course of the year. The income and expenditure have been below that of previous years.

19/04/2022 11:27

This is entirely due to Covid - income reduced due to the switch to on-line learning during the Spring term. As there were no overhead costs associated with the rent of FHS we decided to reduce the fees to £25 per student with past benefits also extending being extended to siblings. We were also sensitive to parents of lesser means going through Covid related hardship . Therefore the both income and expenditures associated with our organisation have reduced proportionately this with the on-line teaching performed during the Spring 2021 terms and the continued suspension of on-site sale of refreshments for the rest of the academic year as parents and student were no longer able to wait on site while students or their siblings attended classes. Yours sincerely
