Talensi Community Development Foundation Trustees’ Annual Report

Period: 1[st] January 2025 to 31[st] December 2025 Registration Number: 1174922

Statement from the Chair

Welcome to the 2025 Annual Report for the Talensi Community Development Foundation.

The Trustees continue to be indebted to those who support our work and to the Royal Grammar School Worcester, England Disability Cricket and Liverpool University, for their ongoing support.

Between January and March 2025, three Trustees visited the Talensi District and helped oversee the investment of the foundations funds to achieve maximum benefit.

Visiting Trustee, Ieuan Crowe, handed over 20 iPads, donated by the Royal Grammar School Worcester (RGSW), to Baare Junior High School. This is the fourth school to benefit from the partnership with the RGSW and donation of iPads.

The principal projects this year were:

  1. The purchase and distribution of 20 bicycles to families without any form of mechanical transport.

  2. Support for the local MP and District Education Director, to ensure that 500 pupils across the Talensi District had breakfast while taking their Junior High School Exams. These exams take place over a week and are crucial for advancing to Senior High School or demonstrating basic academic skills to employers.

  3. In 2024, teachers and pupils in the schools we are supporting, identified the replacement of damaged white boards, and the provision of additional ones, as their priority. Working with a local carpentry shop, we had 20 White Boards made, delivered and installed across three schools in 2025.

  1. At the Salvation Army Schools, there had been issues with the iPads overheating and malfunctioning. This problem was mitigated elsewhere by installing a ceiling (a barrier between heat from the tin roof and the classroom) and the installation of fans. This year, with the help of pupils, teachers and electricians a classroom, that could be shared between the Salvation Army Primary and Junior High Schools, was renovated. This required us to fund works to install a ceiling, new electrics and to fit 8 fans, new lights, new windows and to commission a secure cupboard with charging points for the iPads.

  2. During past visits, Trustee Juliana had heard about girls missing school due to their periods and lack of sanitary products. After hearing about period pants in the UK, she

took some to Ghana for female pupils to try. With the help of Baare Chief’s mother, Alice Balagumyetime and IT Teacher Joyce Lariba the product was shared with pupils at the TSHTS

Feedback received was positive and Trustees are planning to take more donated period pants to Ghana in 2026

  1. During 2025, the Foundation sponsored four students undertaking Nursing studies and two students on Agricultural Degree Courses. As well as these higher education students, and thanks to regular donations, we also sponsored several young people from broken families to continue their schooling. In 2026, we expect to sponsor an additional two students to undertake Teaching Qualifications.

In total £9,858 (£9,259) was spent in the area of benefit in 2025. The Foundation continues to hold £9,858 in reserves to support students complete their scholarships and sponsor new students.

Trustees, Nick and Juliana, travel to Ghana annually to visit family and oversee the TCDF investments in local projects.

They cover their own travel costs and pack their cases with items for the community and project delivery.

This year they were joined by fellow Trustee, Ieuan, who also covered his own travel costs.

On a personal note, I would like to record my own joy and delight in the achievements of our Trust. It is wonderful to be a part of it all and to celebrate some remarkable achievements. I look forward to what is yet to come.

Objectives

The objectives of the Talensi CDF are to work with and support the Talensi community to:

The Foundation works with local leaders on projects that are supported by the Talensi community and help those facing hardship.

In addition, the foundation seeks to promote and support dialogue between the Talensi community and those in the UK, to share learning, understanding and bring mutual charitable benefits. This may be through links between schools, health practitioners, business, and community groups.

Activities and Achievements

The TCDF continues to focus on existing work to improve educational outcomes for young people. The Foundation is now working with five schools in the Talensi District, Tongo Senior High & Technical School, Salvation Army Primary, Salvation Army Junior High School, Baare Junior High School and the Gbeogo School for the Deaf.

In the introduction to this Annual Report, the Chair outlined some of the activities of the Foundation in 2025.

As a result of these activities, pupils now have access to functioning IT equipment and the Internet rather than just relying on text books; families have access to bikes on which to travel to school or employment and at the Gbeogo School for the Deaf, the TCDF gift of sewing machines and tools for the vocational centre ensures students can develop their practical skills, ready for a career after leaving school.

With the Scholarships, 6 young people who would otherwise be unable to continue their studies, despite achieving required grades, can go to University or Nursing College.

As 2025 came to an end, we started to make plans for the purchase of a 20ft shipping container, that would be filled with donated items and shipped to Ghana in 2026.

Related Party Disclosures

Trustees receive no remuneration and have made no claims for travel in undertaking their duties with the Talensi Community Development Foundation.

This includes travel by Trustees to Ghana to support and monitor the investment made by the TCDF monies.

Public Benefit

In selecting education as focus of investment, the Trustees had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit. They have been assured through visits by Trustees, photographs, and communication with the headmasters of the different schools and Local Chiefs, that the investment is benefiting young people from across the Talensi District.

With other activities, such as the Bicycles, the TCDF worked with the Local MP, District Commissioner and Chiefs to ensure benefits reach across the district.

Financial Review

During the financial year 2025 the turnover of the charity was £5,496 (£11,646). This was received from donations to the foundation, tax relief on donations and supporters using www.giveasyoulive.com to generate additional donations as when they shop online.

During 2025 the Foundation spent £9,858 (£10,477) delivering its objectives. This was a significant investment that included £2,420 sponsoring students in further education, £1,186 on Whiteboards, £989 on bicycles and £1,520 on a refurbished IT classroom.

At the end of the year the CDF held £10,969 (£15,333) cash including the ringfenced budget of £9,146 (£11,566) for scholarships. £253 was due to be paid to support a sponsored student and is shown as a Liability in the accounts (B5).
