Talensi Community Development Foundation Trustees’ Annual Report
Period: 1[st] January 2024 to 31[st] December 2024 Registration Number: 1174922
Statement from the Chair
Welcome to the 2024 Annual Report for the Talensi Community Development Foundation. Following last years significant donations, 2024 was a time to put things into action on the ground in the Talensi District.
The Scholarships Programme was launched, with the first two students now undertaking nursing qualification at Bolgatanga Nursing Training College. They started their courses in September 2024.
With the donation in memory of Julia Price, work was completed to provide the Tongo Senior High and Technical School (TSHTS) with a laboratory for use in science subjects. While there is still much work to be done to ensure facilities match the needs of pupils and the skills needed in northern Ghana, this is a great start.
In February 2024, John Jones (Director of Innovation) and Richard Millard (Director of Studies) from Royal Grammar School Worcester visited Ghana, spending time with Baare Chief and the Schools the Foundation is working with. This was another step in the developing partnership between RGSW and Talensi pupils.
The TCDF facilitated a Jess Thirkell, a gap year student, spending three months volunteering, teaching English and French in the Talensi District.
In total £9,259 was spent in the area of benefit during 2024. The Foundation has reserves in place to continue to support existing and sponsoring new scholarships.
In July, Trustees Juliana and Nick, had been honoured to be invited to present student awards at The Grange RGSW (Age 2 to 11).
The Trustees continue to be indebted to those who support the work of the TCDF and to the Royal Grammar School Worcester.

Objectives
The objectives of the Talensi CDF are to work with and support the Talensi community to:
-
i. ensue all young people can access and benefit from training and education.
-
ii. create opportunities for employment for all.
-
iii. provide financial and other assistance for the maintenance, improvement, and provision of public amenities.
-
iv. promote health and wellbeing.
The Foundation works with local leaders on projects that are supported by the Talensi community and help those facing hardship.
The Foundation’s final objective is to promote and support dialogue between the Talensi community and others in the United Kingdom and elsewhere, to share learning and bring mutual charitable benefits. This may be through links between schools, health practitioners, business, and community groups.
Activities and Achievements
The TCDF continues to focus on existing work to improve educational outcomes for young people. The Foundation is now working with four schools in Ghana, Tongo Senior High & Technical School, Salvation Army Primary, Salvation Army Junior High and the Gbeogo School for the Deaf.
During 2024, the TCDF shipped donated sewing machines, tools, textbooks and reading books to Ghana to benefit the pupils in the schools we are working with. Supported by Talensi student volunteers, we painted the TSHTS and Salvation Army Primary Schools ready for the visit by teachers from RGSW.
The visit by John Jones and Richard Millard was a great success. Pupils enjoyed lessons delivered by the visiting teachers and the local teachers could observe the different teaching styles. These teaching methods are being promoted by Ghana Education Service. As well as sharing good practice and spending time learning about Ghana, there was a hard-fought football match between pupils and teachers (including Richard and John) with extra time curtailed by a sinking sun.
Facilities at the TSHTS where greatly enhanced with the creation of a Science Lab with purpose-built tables, stools and equipment. The Lab is a fitting memory to Julia Price who while she had a short life, lived life to the full, overcoming many barriers.
It has been a privilege to work with the Gbeogo School for the Deaf. We took sports clothing donated by the England Disability Cricket and sewing machines and tools for the Vocational Training Centre.
Joining Trustees Juliana and Nick on their visit to the Area of Benefit in early 2024, was Jess Thirkell. Jess was on a gap year and volunteered to spend time teaching English and French in Ghana. It was a great success and she is missed by pupils and fellow teachers alike.

Alongside this work with Schools, and as a result of regular donations, the TCDF can support two children whose parents are unable to care for them. We are also supporting several Talensi Youth continue at High School when financial pressures could have forced them to leave school.
Related Party Disclosures
Trustees receive no remuneration and have made no claims for travel or any other expenses in undertaking their duties with the Talensi Community Development Foundation,
This includes travel by Trustees to Ghana to support the investment of the TCDF monies.
Public Benefit
In selecting education as focus of investment, the Trustees had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit. They have been assured through visits by Trustees, photographs, and communication with the headmasters of the different schools and Baare Chief, that the investment is benefiting young people from across the Talensi District.
Financial Review
During the financial year 2024 the turnover of the charity was £11,646 (£13,756). This was received from donations to the foundation, tax relief on donations and supporters using www.giveasyoulive.com to generate additional donations as when they shop online.
During 2024 the Foundation spent £9,689 (£1,350) delivering its objectives. This was a significant sum and included the investment of the donation in memory of Julia Price, improvements in school facilities, student sponsorship and the purchase of data for the schools to access the internet.
During the year, the Foundation received a donation to invest in bicycles for families without any form of mechanical transport. This will be delivered in the Spring of 2025.
At the end of the year the CDF held £15,331 (£14,162) cash including the ringfenced sum of £11,566 (£6,354) for scholarships.
Structure, Governance and Management
The Talensi CDF is registered with the Charity Commissioners as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (Registered Charity Number 1174922).
Trustees are appointed for terms of 4 years by a resolution passed at a meeting of the Trustees. Trustees are selected who have an interest in the objectives of the Foundation and the skills, knowledge and experience needed to support the effective governance, administration and promotion of the Talensi CDF.
