**Talensi Community Development Foundation Trustees’ Annual Report**

Period: 1[st] January 2021 to 31[st] December 2021 Registration Number: 1174922

## **Statement from the Chair**

Welcome to the 2021 Annual Report for the Talensi Community Development Foundation, our fourth annual report.

We start with sadness as our Treasurer, Linda Milligan, passed away in November 2021. She is missed by many, and the Trustees thank her for her work and enthusiasm to support the setting up of the Talensi CDF and its running in its first four years.

2021 continued to be challenging globally with the Covid19 pandemic but some normality occurred as travel, albeit with restrictions and tests, opened up and Trustees Nick Parker and Juliana Crowe visited the area of benefit to see the work being supported by the Foundation and report back to fellow Trustees.

Thankfully, Ghana continues to be one of the countries least affected by Covid with cases low and life continuing with few restrictions. The community remain vigilant with increase hand washing, mask wearing in more formal settings and community offered vaccination.

While the pandemic continued to have an impact on fundraising, we raised £3,616 (£1,376) and made an investment of £4,545 in improvements at the Tongo Senior High School. The highlight of the years was a live internet link between pupils from Talensi and Worcester, with school choirs sharing songs.

Next year will bring new challenges, which Trustees will seek to overcome so we can continue to support community efforts in Talensi District of Upper East Ghana and meet our charitable objectives.

## **Objectives**

The objectives of the Talensi CDF are to work with and support the Talensi community to:

- i. ensue all young people can access and benefit from training and education

- ii. create opportunities for employment for all

- iii. provide financial and other assistance for the maintenance, improvement and provision of public amenities.

- iv. promote health and wellbeing

In delivering these activities, the Foundation invests in projects that are supported by the community and to sustainably harness and manage the natural resources of the area to help those facing hardship and for mutual benefit.

The Foundation’s final objective is to promote and support dialogue between the Talensi community and others in the United Kingdom and elsewhere, to share learning and bring mutual charitable benefits. This may be through links between schools, health practitioners, business, and community groups.

## **Activities and Achievements**

While Covid19 continued to have an impact on fundraising in 2021, we invested reserves from 2020 and new donations to support improvements to the school. This included installation of ceilings and fans in the Library and IT room. These improvements had been identified as priorities by pupils and staff to create a cooler environment to study in. At the same time, the library was repainted, additional book selves provided, electric plugs provided in each classroom and the exterior of the school painted.

We also collected donated items and shipped these to Talensi District. This included two sewing machines, tools and wellington boots. The sewing machines will support two families to earn an income as tailors, the wellington boots offer protection from snakes when working in fields and collecting Shea Nut and the tools have been donated to the school.

## **Related Party Disclosures**

In managing the Talensi Community Development Foundation, Trustees receive no remuneration and have made no claims for travel or any other expenses.

## **Public Benefit**

In selecting the Tongo Senior High School as a project to invest in, the Trustees had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit. They have been assured through visits by Trustees, photographs and communication with the Headmaster and Baare Chief, that the investment is benefiting young people from across the Talensi District. It is achieving this by improving their future prospects to secure, knowledge, life skills and pathway to improved financial independence, .

A majority of Trustees have no family links with the area of benefit. Where there are family members, the Trustees ensure any personal benefit is incidental and family members are not the principal beneficiaries.

## **Financial Review**

During the financial year 2021 the turnover of the charity was £3,440 (£1,376). This was received from donations to the foundation, tax relief on donations and sponsored links on www.smile.amazon.com and Give as you Live.

During 2021 the Foundation invested £4,545 in improvements and additional IT equipment for the school. £245 was spent on overheads (bank charges and website) and £114 shipping donated items to Ghana.
