## **The Playhouse Theatre Northampton** ## **Annual Report for September 2023 to August 2024** Thishas been a particularly difficult year for the theatre which ended with a nearly unanimous decision taken at an Extraordinary General Meeting on 20 August to servenotice to terminate the leaseof the theatre that has been our home for over 60 years.Thisdecision was not taken lightly but the theatre will continue to thrive, initially using premisesavailable to hire while searching for a new home. We did ran a full programme of performances. Theseincluded 'Bouncers' by John Godber which had been selected by the membership as the play that they would most like to seeagain but which had been postponed on more than one occasion for different reasons.When it was eventually staged the performances were lively and very well received by the audiences. Therewere a number of successfulhires,notably including two weeksin March when students from the University of Northampton put on 10 different short plays which they wrote, directed and performed, all to a high standard. Unfortunately hires like this are no longer possible. The accounts for the year show operational profit reduced by about £3,000from the previous year and the bar profits down by a similar amount. While expenditure on the building was low, if we had decided to stay in the premisesthere would have been a need for high immediate and ongoing costs to enable us to meet current safety standards. Corinna Leeder,the Chair and severalother members of the Management Committee have taken the opportunity to retire from their roles as volunteers on the Committee and all are thanked for their efforts over the years.A new enthusiastic Committee has been appointed by the trustees with Ben Knight as Chair and GilesMooney as Treasurer.They are actively arranging for performances to continue at alternative venues. Sincethe decision to vacatethe building, trustees GaryHolland, Debby de Haes,EdBennett and SallyFuller have resigned and Ben Knight has been co-opted to join Mike Bond and myself as trustees.We currently have the minimum number of trustees permitted by the Constitution. All the retiring trustees are thanked for their enormous efforts over the last few difficult yearsto keep the theatre running. I have been called upon to be an Acting Chair of Trusteesagain this year, although it remains my intention to stand down from this role. Although we shall no longer have premises,for the time being, the organisation will still be dependent on volunteers from within the membership for roles both on and off the stage, to enable productions to take place for the benefit of the participants and the wider community.
