## **The Playhouse Theatre Northampton (Charity Number 1174920)** ## **Annual Report** It has been another difficult year for the theatre during which good progress was made on works to the building but for various reasons there were no productions during the season making it well over 2 years when the doors were not open to the public. While the accounts show a loss of over £27,000 in the year up to the end of August 2022 this includes expenditure of over £17,000 on refurbishment of the building. The main item has been work done to strengthen the stage which no longer creaks when performers walk on it. At the end of the year the overall balance was still at a healthy level but as always there is a long list of further works that are either essential or highly desirable to carry out so we shall continue to seek additional funding to meet the cost of those that cannot be met from revenue. It would not have been possible to get to the stage that the theatre could reopen without the efforts of numerous volunteers especially Ed, Mark, Philip and Mike. Theatre has relied on the dedication and effort made by Corinna Leeder and all the members of the Management Committee and other volunteers in order to continue to operate through these difficult times. I should make a special mention of Kevin Evans who has for several years been responsible for publicity but is retiring from the committee. He goes out on a high as the website and brochure for the new season have given the theatre a fresh image. The Trustees have re-appointed the committee and have recently added Ed Bennett to the committee as the Facilities Manager which is a new role covering looking after the maintenance and operation of the building and will include arranging cleaning which means that this post can cover the previous role of House Manager which will no longer be required. There are currently five trustees when we are required to have between 3 and 9. Two are seeking re-election and Mike Bond is standing for election which would bring the total to 6. Additional trustees can be appointed by co-option at any time and the Board intends to carry out a skills audit before seeking to make any further appointments. The Chair of trustees is appointed by the trustees and although Bob Entwistle is seeking re-election as a trustee, he has decided to step down from the role of Chair which has been held by him since the theatre became a Charity 5 years ago. He said, ‘It has been a privilege to hold that position and be so well supported by all the other trustees during that period, but I consider that now is the right time for the organisation to have new leadership’. Moving forward the next Chair will need ongoing commitment and assistance from all our performers, supporters, members and volunteers that make this such a wonderful place.
