Charity name: Norfolk Tortoise Club

Charity registration number: 1174886

Objectives and Activities

SORP reference
Summary of the purposes of the
charity as set out in its governing
document
Para 1.17 To promote humane behaviour towards tortoises by
promoting best practice for tortoise care, providing
a rehoming service for tortoises in need of care and
attention by reason of sickness, maltreatment, poor
circumstances, ill-usage, changed owner
circumstances and educating the public in matters
pertaining to animal welfare in general and the
prevention of cruelty and suffering among animals.
Summary of the main activities in
relation to those purposes for the
public benefit, in particular, the
activities, projects or services
identified in the accounts.
Para 1.17 and
1.19
Offering tortoise keepers knowledgeable and
friendly advice and support in their rehoming
journey, caring for tortoises that have been ill-
treated or are unwell by providing veterinary care,
and holding events and informative meetings to
promote welfare and best practice tortoise
husbandry. We also take in any unwanted animals
to care for at the centre so we can access their
health needs and if necessary, rehabilitate.
Statement confirming whether the
trustees have had regard to the
guidance issued by the Charity
Commission on public benefit
Para 1.18 Our goals as a charity and the trustees are to
continue to support the tortoise community,
whether regarding the animals, or the owners to
practice best care, protecting the futures of the
animals and preventing incorrect care resulting in
tortoises unable to thrive. The aim is that all
tortoises should thrive, not just survive and
education and advice is key.

Achievements and Performance

SORP reference
Summary of the main achievements
of the charity, identifying the
difference the charity’s work has
made to the circumstances of its
beneficiaries and any wider benefits
to society as a whole.
Para 1.20 In the financial year, we have rescued and
rehomed over 80 tortoises. All this has been done
with ongoing support to all new owners. We have
rescued tortoises that have had issues with their
health, rehabilitated them and then settled into their
new home.
Weve added a bespoke medical unit with funds
raised from our donors. We hold events to keep
owners updated on current practices and pass on
information either in person, or via an online
meeting. Our volunteers step up to help to support
all of our events. As a charity, we also offer support
to other tortoise charities

Financial Review

Financial Review
Review of the charity’s financial
position at the end of the period
Para 1.21 This financial period has been a challenging one for
the Norfolk tortoise club. Price rises and electricity
increases had impacted on the centre, but we are
in a good place to begin the next financial year.
Statement explaining the policy for
holding reserves stating why they
are held
Para 1.22 We have to ensure we have funds to continue the
work at the end of the financial year.
Amount of reserves held Para 1.22 We would like to have at least £5000 at at the end
of the financial year
Reasons for holding zero reserves Para 1.22
Details of fund materially in deficit Para 1.24
Explanation of any uncertainties
about the charity continuing as a
going concern
Para 1.23 With tortoise rescue, we cannot predict the animals
arriving at the centre, and we are aware of our
capabilities. We will always push forward in the
provision of the animal care, but with rising costs
we are very mindful that we need to continue to
progress our fundraising work
