STRUCTURE, GOVERNANCE AND MANAGEMENT
Risk management
The trustees have a duty to identify and review the Tisks to which the charitv is exposed and to ensure
appropriate controls are in place to pro￿.]de reasonable assurance against fraud and error. This is carried out
on an ongoing basis during the year and the trustees are satisfied that the systems ill place are sufficient to
rnitigate exposure to major risks.
OBJECTIVES AND ACTtVlTIES
The Margate Bookie exists to advance education and arts and culture for the public benefit by promoting and
providing opportunities for the appreciation, understanding and enjoyment of literature, in particular through
the promotion and running of an annual literary festival in Margate.
ACHIEVEMENT AND PERFORMANCE
Margate Bookie is proud to be part of the town's regeneration story and our festival in October 2024 welcomed
leading authors such as Lisa Jewell, Pauline Black, Nick Hornby'5 Ministry of Storie5, Moira BufFini, Helen
Lcdcrer, Jeremy Deller and Robin Ince. alongsidc cultural tourists from London and beyond, to thc dclights of the
coolest seaside town in the UK.
2024 was a packed year for the Bookie. Let's take a look at just some of the highlights.
BOOKIE
Talks from local wrilers like Daisy Buchanan, Hary Baker and Raymond Antrobus brought people together,
taught them new things, turn strangers into friends and f￿e our imaginations. Books are empathy machines,
opening up our minds to how other people feel and think. And we keep ticket prices as accessible as possible
or indeed free as is the case with most of our children's evenis. The Bookie's annual literary festival is bigh
profile, but the Margate Bookie is also proud of its all year round charity work.

Our volunleerpoolgels bigger (and better) everyyear
The festival increased its volunteer pool from 35 to 98, surpassing the target of 70. VolunleeTS were new and
re￿MIng. A programme of events specially for volunteers aimed to build social networks, provide access to
Margate's CUl￿ra1 institutions, offer insight into crealive eTrenl management that catered to the diversity within
the group. It brought to light individuals ￿-hO we would like lo support and ￿'ork w'ith in the future.
The aims of the volunteer programme are to engage people living in Thanel ￿'1th Bookie and wider cultural activity
in Thanet, to open up access to key cultural ￿enUeS in Margate and create a programme of learning opportunities
and socials so participants could feel part of Thanet's cultural on(voings. feel a sense of pride in place, learn new

Achievements and impact:
We reached a diversity of people, including those not in education or employThent, ne￿,coMers to Thanet,
including rcfugees, and people on low incomes, who are neurodivergent and those with a disability or
long-temi illness.
We created an arts_based learning programme and a series of socials in addition to the volunteering shifts.
Our aim was to create eight training se55ions and six team building events, and we delivered 12 learning
se55ions and six socials, in addition to the volunteering opportunities throughout the festival.
We brought people into key Thanel culture institutions. We achieved this through a free guided tour of
Dreamland, and volunteering shifts at the Margate School, Turner Contemporary, Dreamland and Marine
Studios, and through learning events at Marine Smdios and Ark.
Through partaking in the volunteer progranime, participants were able to upskill in photography, creative
and professional ￿'ritIng, as well as gaining hands-on and transparent event experience.
