The main activity of the Foundation is to appoint Soulsby Traveling Fellows who will carry out approved projects in the general field of One Health internationally. In addition, the Board appoints a current leader in One Health globally to deliver the periodic Soulsby Lecture, usually in association with a major conference. Lecturers appointed generally alternate between medical, veterinary, environmental and other professional disciplines related to One Health.
The Board has defined the policy and criteria for Fellowship, and a written procedure is followed. This has been published on the Foundation’s website as part of openness and transparency and will remain under review as each appointment cycle takes place. Eligibility for consideration for a Fellowship has been expanded geographically to include affiliation to a relevant academic institution anywhere in the world. Fellows must hold a qualification in a relevant discipline which may include, but is not limited to, veterinary and human medicine as well as ecology and environmental sciences, social sciences, and economics.
Two trustees retired during the year. One new trustee was nominated and will be considered by the Board at its December meeting. The Foundation is formally connected with the RCVS, the RSM and the RSTMH with each organisation having a nominee on the Board. During 2023, the Board agreed to change the name of the Foundation to The Soulsby Foundation for One Health to make more explicit the main focus of the charity.
Twenty-six Soulsby Fellows have so far been appointed and they have now formed a Community of Fellows to provide advice to the Board as well as to each other. One Fellow, selected by the Community, attends Board meetings as a non-trustee to participate in Board discussions and provide feedback to and from all the Fellows.

The Trustees spent significant effort during 2023 reviewing the criteria for Fellowship applications and published revised guidelines ahead of opening for applications for 2024 Fellowships on 1[st] November. The changes generally broadened the range of professional disciplines and geographical locations eligible for consideration. The selection process was also revised to minimise any potential bias, whether conscious or unconscious. The changes have been further refined during 2024 to streamline the applicant assessment process. All changes have been published on our website to help applicants comply with the requirements.
The daughter of Lord Soulsby continues to be a Patron of the charity and Lord Trees of the Ross, one of the founding trustees, has been our second Patron since December 2021.
A volunteer non-trustee serves as administrative support to the Board, especially in relation to arranging meetings and preparing reports as well as managing the processes for selecting Fellows. This individual receives a small honorarium.
A formal system to identify any Conflict of Interest in relation to any of the Foundation’s work, including awarding Fellowships, has been put in place and is described on the website.
The Board has established a Finance sub-committee chaired by the Hon. Treasurer with two other Trustees and terms of reference have been agreed. An anti-bribery policy has been developed and a system for internal reporting of suspicions has been agreed.

The objects of the CIO are, for the public benefit, the advancement of science and public health, in particular by promoting research, education, healthcare delivery and advocacy around the connections between animal and human health and the environment.
## **Soulsby Fellowships:**
**Summary of the main activities undertaken for the public benefit in relation to these objects (include within this section the statutory declaration that trustees have had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit)**
Soulsby Fellows are required to produce a report of their Fellowship project, and encouraged to make this a public report, either as an oral presentation or a poster at a relevant conference, or as an openly published scientific paper or report.
## **Soulsby Lectures:**
`o` The eighth Soulsby Lecture was delivered on 31[st] July 2024 as part of the RSTMH West Africa Meeting in Lagos, Nigeria. It was presented by Professor Oyewale Tomori, Professor of Virology at Redeemer's University, Ede in Nigeria. The lecture was presented in person, and a recording of his lecture has been placed on the Foundation’s website.
The Trustees have regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit in selecting Soulsby Fellows and the topic and delivery of the annual Soulsby Lecture.

The Board has published the following on its website to ensure its policy on grant making is transparent:

Both these documents have been updated during 2023-24 and the revised versions were published on the website in Summer 2024.
- The process followed by the Trustees in selecting Fellows from applications received - this was reviewed and amended during 2023 to minimise the potential for bias.
- The Foundation’s Conflict of Interest Policy; and
- A full list of the Trustees with brief bios - all serve in a voluntary capacity.
The Board has agreed that expenses of Board members will be reimbursed only exceptionally in order to maximise our impact in the field of One Health through the donations and grants we receive.
Section D Achievements and performance
**Summary of the main achievements of the charity** • **Soulsby Fellowships: during the year** The sixth cycle inviting applications for Soulsby Fellowships was launched on 1[st] November 2023 with applications being accepted until 31[st] January 2024. The seven new 2024 Fellows were announced in June 2024.
All previous Fellows have either completed their projects or are actively pursuing their projects and providing regular reports to the Trustees. The Trustees are aware that the Covid-19 pandemic had the effect of restricting opportunities for travel for many Fellows. In addition, several Fellows have experienced pregnancy or health issues during the period of their Fellowship. The Trustees have taken a sympathetic approach and approved no-cost extensions to awards to allow for such delays.
• **The Eighth Soulsby Lecture:**
The eighth Soulsby Lecture was delivered in Nigeria in July 2024.

**Brief statement of the charity’s policy on reserves**
The Foundation’s policy is to hold all its funds in its regular bank accounts with HSBC. At any time, the current and savings accounts will hold sufficient funds to cover anticipated expenses over a 3-to-6-month period. The remainder of our capital funds are deposited into Money Market Accounts to benefit from good interest rates. Generally, MMA accounts guaranteeing a rate for four months have been the most attractive.

The Foundation does not have any funds materially in deficit.

The Foundation’s initial funding in July 2016 was through a £100K legacy donated by Lord Soulsby. Since achieving charitable status in September 2017, the Trustees have sought additional donations, mainly from friends and colleagues of Lord Soulsby. This has added about £85K to the total. In addition, we were awarded a grant from the Alborada Trust of £125K over five years (2020-24). During 2024, based on the number of highquality applications we have received and the robust selection process we have in place, the Alborada grant was renewed to provide £25K per year (£125K total) over the next five years (2025-29).
The Trustees awarded a total of £50K in 2018 (two Fellowships) and 2019 (three Fellowships). Since 2020, we have been able to match the Alborada Trust grant and hence award about £50K per year (four or five Fellowships). We anticipate this will enable us to have a cadre of some 30 Fellows appointed by 2025 who are active in the field of One Health. We hope this demonstrated success will enable us to apply for further substantial grants at that stage though we recognise the current environment for fund-raising is very challenging.
