Riding For Smiles
Trustees report March 2024
The charity continues to work with a number of schools throughout Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire (term time only), and the Adult group previously founded by Worksop Mind. The experiences are still based on a riding session and stable management session; each group attending generally for 6 or 12 weeks depending on individual needs. In addition to our established group , for the first time, the charity has also provided both riding and carriage experiences to a residential home caring for adults with severe mental health needs.
Both Archdale and Stubbin Wood special schools have made use of the wheelchair accessible carriage throughout the academic year, although some of the winter sessions were cancelled due to severe weather.
Steff continues to provide ongoing support to the school staff in choosing children thought to benefit most from the sessions and follows this up with progress reports to the schools which for example feed into OFSTED reports.
Steff plans to take a step back from all the practical work during the sessions in September 2025 but will continue to provide the admin support, liaison with the schools and create funding bids – she envisages this will account for 6 hours per week.
Plans have been made to engage a member of the Coloured Cob Equestrian team to provide the stable management sessions with the children and to draw up a new programme of non-riding activities.
