Minutes of last AGM held on 16 November 2022
Miriam went over the minutes. They were agreed to be a true record. There were no matters arising.
Acting Chair’s Report
Miriam was still acting Chair and for the last 12 months has continued to support and help people to access information.
We still had only five Trustees but would like to have more. Although the Charity had not grown in size, if felt like we had grown a bit and had more service providers involved.
The Hubs were generally working well and attracted people at all stages of their diagnosis and their family members. We would like to have more support.
Miriam was keen to roll out the Dementia Friends sessions and also run some sessions for libraries. Sessions could be online or in person, but we needed people to sign up to them and also needed venues to hold them in. We were keen to work towards being a ‘Dementia Friendly Community’.
Morrisons had suggested that we hold a collection at the store.

Maureen enquired as to whether we had, or distributed, ID cards showing that someone had a caring role. It was thought that the Admiral Nurses may have these. Action: Miriam to contact them.
Funding was an issue. Judy Clay suggested that we contact the ‘Home Instead Charities’ as they may have funding available for events and activities. Action: Judy would speak to Rachael at Home Instead to find more information.
Judy suggested that we join in with the Home Instead Companionship Cafes, which were held in Kendal and Grange.
It was important to share as much information as possible between organisations and our members, so that it could be promoted as widely as possible. Action: Sally would email and share information and flyers.
The idea of a coffee morning at the Town Hall was mooted.
There is a new dementia café in Kirkby Lonsdale.
Miriam would like to hold a ‘Dementia Carers Day’ possibly in the spring to coincide with Dementia Action Day.
Treasurers Report
Viv reported that there is £3800.00 in the bank at the moment. There were expenses still to be accounted for, including insurance of £500.00. She predicted that there would only be around £900.00 left by the end of March. We may get some money from the Christmas Tree Festival, but this could not be guaranteed.
The situation was dire. We needed around £7400.00 a year to sustain our work and so it was imperative to find some more funding.
Sally suggested approaching corporate sponsors and she would approach charities.
Thanks were given to Sandi Shadbolt and ASDA, who continued to provide the refreshments at the Hubs.
Update from the Charity Organiser
The Hubs had continued this year. Attendance varied from month to month, but they were well supported by service providers.
Sally no longer attended Kirkby Lonsdale market but attended Hubs at Ambleside Parish Centre and also other ad-hoc events, such as in Arnside with PSCO. Hayley Newman.
She also linked with Home Instead activities, such as going to Kendal market, a Dementia Day at Beetham Nursery and singing at Morrisons to mark World Dementia Day.
Miriam attended the Torchlight Procession reception held by the Mayor and also the ‘Older Persons Day’ at Kendal Leisure Centre.
2
Sally continued to form links with CVS and attended the CVS Funding Fair at the Town Hall.
She had also attended a Dementia Day at Crooklands Auction Mart in March and joined the ‘Harri Bus’ on two occasions in Staveley and in Grange.
Most emails and enquiries were people asking about activities, what support was available and day care in the area.
We had received a few ad hoc donations and some money from the Christmas Tree Festival. Miriam has also raised money for us.
Sally applied to the Lottery Community Fund again but was turned down, possibly because we had received funding from them last year.
Sally would explore funding options and grands from: Kendal town Council, The Hadfield Trust, The Sir John Fisher Foundation, Frieda Scott Trust, The Lottery Community Fund and Cumbria Community Foundation.
In May we attended a Golf Day at Silverdale Golf Club, which was organised by Heron Hill Care Home and raised over £1000.
She will approach Kendal Town Council and Care/Retirement Homes to run some ‘open’ sessions about Dementia Awareness.
We will have a tree at the Christmas Tree Festival again this year and the theme is ‘Under the Sea’.
Promotion on social media and by using flyers/posters continued and other local newsletters would be considered including church newsletters and community magazines.
It was suggested that we could form better links with Kendal College, the local churches., the WI and sports and social clubs in the area . Action: Judy to provide contact for WI.
The Trustees thanked Sally for her work.
Appointment of Chair, Secretary, and Trustees
No-one had come forward offering to become a Trustee. It was agreed that the current Trustees would continue in their roles for another year.
Date of next members meeting - Thursday 22 February at 2pm. Venue TBC and it would also be offered on Zoom.
