Report on your charity’s public benefit

The year ended 31 March 2023 shared a similar theme to previous years. Steady, but slow progress towards out main objective – a 25-year lease to refurbish the former station building at Mytholmroyd into a buoyant creative community hub.

We had unsuccessful applications to the Government Levelling-up Community Ownership Fund – for around £200k to supplement our similar amount of Match-Funding to complete our objective and have a creative community hub.

Whilst there has been considerable administrative and legal work, the local community have benefited from several of our initiatives.

In conjunction with Northern Trains and Calderdale Community Cares (CCC) several train trips were organised for those people CCC recognised as being lonely in the post-Covid period. These trips

were appreciated and still mentioned some twelve months later.

Trustees have responded to requests to publicise the building’s rebirth as a Community Hub through oral presentations including photographic evidence of before and after to many areas of the community, including businesses, local societies, and clubs for the benefit of the Ukrainian refugees who have settled in the area to help them understand and feel ‘at home’ as they are now part of our community. Knowledge is strength.

Visits around the building have been very popular, from residents who used the station building in their youth; all surprised, delighted to be shown the Station master’s residence. They had no idea of its existence. Nor of its size. The same delighted reaction could be said of visitors to the area who had enjoyed the accompanied tours of the building.

More recently, trustees suggested using the ground floor spaces for a series of exhibitions in conjunction with the local Hebden Bridge Open Studios. Planning commenced in January 2023 with a valuable grant contribution from the Seedcorn Fund of Northern Trains. Whilst these exhibitions were held in July (in the 2023-24 Annual Report), it was a great success and has led to more local organisations becoming interested in our charitable objectives etc. – which include - History of the

building. Wider community interest has resulted, and advance planning begun to commemorate the 150 years since the building was opened. Schools and local youth organisations will participate and benefit.

Trustees

A number of changes took place during the period due to personal time commitments, moving from the area. Leaving were Jason Boom, Graham Franklin, Anne Stamp and Liz Nickells.

Our new Trustees during this financial year were – Nicky King 13/07/2022, Sarah Grundy 09/11/2022 and Katie Bates 05/01/2023.

The Board on 31 March 2023 comprised of – Katie Bates Sarah Grundy Graham Joyce Nicky King Geoffrey Mitchell (Chairman) Susan Mitchell (Secretary) Judith Schofield (Treasurer) Carolyn Watson Geoffrey Wood

Trustees have mainly been recruited through wordof-mouth or affiliation of mutual interests – artists etc.

Much of the work by the voluntary charity officers has been administrative, dealing with legal matters has been extremely time-consuming; therefore, this has limited the scope, and funding available for Trustee training thus far. This will have to change in view of Trustees future plans to use the available spaces for more public events and will necessitate knowledge of Risk Assessment etc. to carry this forward.

The amount of interest shown by the local community during the initial recent Open Days has resulted in new plans to celebrate the 150 years since the building was opened in 1874 in 2024. Participation from the local schools and community will be key elements assisted by the experience of the local College students and staff, as well as members of the Mytholmroyd Station Partnership, and support from our Community Managers from Northern Trains Ltd, Network Rail, Community Rail Network as well as Hebden Royd Town Council and Community Funding for Calderdale.

Report to the trustees/ Charity Name members of The Station Building Mytholmroyd On accounts for the year 31 March 2023 Charity no 1174609 ended (if any) Set out on pages (remember to include the page numbers of additional sheets) I report to the trustees on my examination of the accounts of the above charity (“the Trust”) for the year ended 31 / 03 / 2023 . Responsibilities and As the charity's trustees, you are responsible for the preparation of the basis of report accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (“the Act”).

I report in respect of my examination of the Trust’s accounts carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act and in carrying out my examination, I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act.

Independent I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have
examiner's statement come to my attention in connection with the examination (other than that disclosed below *) which gives me cause to believe that in, any material respect:
the accounting records were not kept in accordance with section 130 of the Charities Act; or
the accounts did not accord with the accounting records; or
• the accounts did not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and content of accounts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 other than any requirement that the accounts give a ‘true and fair’ view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination.

I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
