Great Chishill Windmill Trust CIO (The Trust)
Chairman and Trustees’Report - Year to 31[st] May 2021
The past year has raised very specific issues for the Trust but it has come through strongly and is in a good position to face its future.
Lockdown and non-availability of materials severely curtailed restoration work but a significant achievement was made when, in September, the millwright successfully tested the wind-driven tail mechanism that will turn the mill to wind automatically. Progress towards completion of the tail restoration and subsequent safety assessment of its operation has, however, been slow. It is now forecast to be completed during Summer 2021. Finances are in place to see through the final stages of the current restoration project.
Throughout the year restricted travel and social distancing requirements have taken a toll on visitor numbers and consequently income. Nonetheless, occasional guided tours of the property have been conducted yielding encouraging donations. The siting of a donations box for casual visitors has also given a steady flow, albeit it small at present. Both give hope that as leisure activity increases in the future, donations from visitors can be grown into a significant source of income.
The current aim of the Trust is to create a sustainable income stream to cover recurring costs such as insurance, site maintenance and structural repairs. This is progressing well with an annual grant from the Parish Council and standing order regular donations currently giving more than £4,000 pa. Merchandising, sale of apple juice and other initiatives add significantly to this figure and will become more important as coronavirus restrictions reduce.
The Trustees are grateful for the continuing support of villagers and Friends of the Windmill and I, as Chairman, would like to add my personal thanks to my fellow Trustees and Committee Members for their support, efforts and enthusiasm throughout this year's strange circumstances. I remain confident that the Trust will continue to meet its aim of preserving the windmill and making it available to the public for the foreseeable future.
