Year ending 31 August 2022

Young Masters Visual Art School (YMVAS) Creative Hub

Charity Details

Charity number: 1174558 Address: 2 Upper Ashley Lane BD17 7DA Telephone Number: 07753513869

The trustees of the charity are as follows: Dr Virginija Kuosaite-Knowles (appointed 7 September 2017 as Chair of Trustees), Georgia Jean Marie Griffiths (appointed 7 September 2017, resigned November 2020), Amanda Louise Gill (appointed 28 November 2018), Leon Paul Oakley (appointed 28 November 2018).

Governing Document

YMVAS is governed by its Constitution of a Charitable Incorporated Organisation dated 7 September 2017. It is registered as a charity with the Charity Commission. We have assessed what skills are needed across the board, and sought help from external bodies to recruit more business aware trustees where needed. In addition to this we have sought guidance on the responsibilities of our trustees, and made this available to them. Anyone over the age of 18 can become a member of the trustees.

Organisation and Charitable Aims

YMVAS is a charitable after-school art school opened for young people age 4 to 16 years old. We teach painting, drawing, sculpture, art history and much more. The work our students create is regularly displayed at free public exhibitions locally and abroad. We provide preGCSE and GCSE level qualifications through Trinity College London Arts Award certification. YMVAS supports autistic, disabled and gifted young people.

Young Masters Visual Art School (YMVAS) encourages social engagement of children and young people through the teaching of art and design. It promotes creativity, curiosity and confidence in its students, and has contributed to a to notable improvement in many students' attainment in other areas of their wider education.

Chair’s Report

Young Masters Visual Art School is a result of dedicated work of Dr Virginija Kuosaite-Knowles and her team. The charity has evolved from Idle Art Studio Ltd through amount of charitable work the company has provided since it has been established in March 2014. Relevant developments of the company have been outlined in a Charity Report year ending 31 August 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021.

The academic year September 2021 to August 2022 was the first full uninterrupted year after Covid. We observed a continuous awareness from our parents regarding the rise of living costs. And we were affected by continuous rise of material costs and energy bills. Our total unrestricted funds at the beginning or the academic year were £30,000 and we made a conscious decision not to rise the attendance costs for our families. We put a lot of effort into

the funding applications and continued a careful management of our spending costs. Our total income reduced by 25%. However, despite the rising costs we managed to keep our spending at the same level compared to 2021. We additionally received Omicron Grant and Additional Restrictions Grant from the local authority, £10,549 in total, which we put towards Silver/GSCE level courses in Photography (including the equipment and Adobe Photoshop license), Islamic Art, and Textiles (including sewing machines). We additionally spent £2,000 on funding consultancy with NPG (Non-Profit-Growth) and spent £1,260 on staff training in Silver Award (Trinity College London) and CPD (Continuous Professional Development) in textiles.

Curriculum for academic year 2021-2022: This academic year 2021-2022 we further expanded pre-school/KS1 age provision in form of additional Saturday Mini Masters classes; expanded a regular KS2 provision in form of additional Saturday classes; expanded 11+ provision in form of free Sunday Bronze/Silver/GCSE classes in addition to the weekday courses designed to achieve Silver/GCSE qualification in Photography, Islamic Art, Fashion Design, Illustration and Advanced Painting.

Our main provision remains for the primary school children age 7-11. We started a year with observational drawing of natural forms and transferred that into a clay. Then we moved on to a large format mixed media artwork, based on Kerry Darlington work. Our next long-term project was to master the perspective and draw the streets of local places. Then we moved on to acrylic painting of cityscapes from around the world. This work was displayed at Bingley Little Theatre and later travelled to the Children’s Library in Zarasai, Lithuania. We spent winter term at school studying Pop artist, including Roy Lichtenstein and Bridget Riley; Street artists Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring. Then we created our own version of selfportrait in street art style. In spring term we moved into portraiture painting, transferring images from our own photographs and using acrylics on canvas. This work was a focal point of our end of a year exhibition in September 2022. Well attended by Young Masters families and the Lord Mayor of Bradford, Cllr Martin Lowe. The exhibition also included an animal and human (students own images) portrait fusion based on art of Charlotte Caron, with most amazing results. We finished a school year creating a wall of papier mache animal masks- the pride and joy of our school and another centrepiece of the exhibition.

Achievements: Lord Mayor of Bradford Christmas card competition: Our school had two winners for Bradford Council Christmas card competition and had a lovely celebration with the family and friends at Bradford City Hall with dazzling lights and twinkling trees. The Lord Mayor Cllr Shabir Hussain handed out certificates.

Safeguarding Certificate: Young Masters Visual Art School achieved Manchester & Bradford Local Authority Foundation Award for Quality Safeguarding provision in Out of School Settings. We were nominated one out of ten best out of school settings in Bradford. The certificate was handed at Bradford City Hall in March 2022 with key policies in place in:

IWD 2022: Stitching on Tuesday & Stitching on Sundays via Small Arts, Culture & Heritage Grants (£1000 personal grant to VKK). Through learning basic methods of hand stitching and using recycled wool fabric products we created animals to celebrate a rural and urban natural life in the area including the canal, river, and the woods. With a life-long learning experience how to use a thread and a needle; how to plan and maquette; to recycle and repurpose fabrics and turn them into a family heirloom. Hand stitching promotes joy and well-being, reduces stress and anxiety. These quality mental health improvement techniques are vital in today’s society.

Her Majesty Platinum Jubilee: A free family event, thanks to Bradford Council Neighbourhood Service £200 donation and Young Masters Visual Art School volunteering. We warmly invited the community to join us and celebrate Her Majesty’s long and gentle reign. We welcomed Young Masters families, members of the public and anyone else who wanted to bring a picnic and work together creating an accessible and fun piece of art, a large mural/wall hanging depicting Her Majesty and Her beloved Corgis in a fun and colourful style. We used a mixture of different art mediums to achieve the image, and this provided a unique opportunity for all participants to try out new skills and gain confidence in mark making and colour application.

Silver/GCSE Arts Award: Young Masters Visual Art School is continuously building a strong reputation within the Bradford district with a proven track record in our culturally significant provision, creating opportunities to network and share good practice in sustainable arts and cultural initiatives. Since 2016 we became Trinity College London Arts Award centre and a qualified provider of certified qualifications in visual arts from Entry Level to Level 2 (GCSE) qualification which then allowed our students to choose further education at a college level. This clearly had a huge positive impact to young people’s life. The students’ hard work and art teachers’ dedication has inspired us to create more courses for a new academic year. We have received an Additional Restrictions Grand from the local authority to support our In Readiness for Further Education Grant. This grant helped us to embed the Silver/GCSE provision in to 12+ courses by the end of academic year 2022.

We are recognising the positive impact of this opportunity on all our students and their families. We support families and students from many different backgrounds including culturally diverse, home-schooled and those with additional educational needs. The Silver/GCSE provision is the vital stepping stone for those who may not be able to achieve the required number of qualifications in a mainstream education. In addition, the Silver/GSCE provides an additional qualification for those who are very academic and want to enhance their existing qualifications in the Arts.

What does it mean for some of our students to receive Silver Award in the Arts?

Sophie:

It's a huge achievement; it has really helped me develop my leadership and communication skills and even though we were challenged by Lockdown, we still managed to achieve our Silver Award. I tried my best and persevered, even I found it hard sometimes, but I received an awful lot of support.

Ema:

Personally, it means setting myself a future goal (which involves art) and working towards my life dream. Learning new skills, stepping out of a comfort zone and getting first recognition. Making me proud of myself by achieving it. At the beginning it felt scary and non-achievable, but it was so worth of hard work.

Jo:

I am going to be going to college this year, and having the Silver Award will mean that I can go and do a Level 2 Business course rather than a Level 1. I doubted my own abilities, but at the end I had fun and really enjoyed the course, art is meant to be fun.

Note 2 Accounting policies
2.2 INCOME
This standard list of accounting policies has been applied by the charity except for those ticked "No" or "N/a". Where a
different or additional policy has been adopted then this is detailed in the box below.
Yes
No

Recognition of income
Donated services and facilities that are consumed immediately are recognised as
income with an equivalent amount recognised as an expense under the appropriate
heading in the SOFA.
The cost of any stock of goods donated for distribution to beneficiaries is deemed to be
the fair value of those gifts at the time of their receipt and they are recognised on
receipt. In the reporting period in which the stocks are distributed, they are recognised
as an expense at the carrying amount of the stocks at distribution.
Donated services and
facilities
Donated services and facilities are included in the SOFA when received at the value of
the gift to the charity provided the value of the gift can be measured reliably.
These are included in the Statement of Financial Activities (SoFA) when:
• the charity becomes entitled to the resources;
· it is more likely than not that the trustees will receive the resources; and
• the monetary value can be measured with sufficient reliability.
Donated goods
Contractual income and
performance related
grants
Offsetting
There has been no offsetting of assets and liabilities, or income and expenses, unless required
or permitted by the FRS 102 SORP or FRS 102.
Grants and donations
Grants and donations are only included in the SoFA when the general income
recognition criteria are met (5.10 to 5.12 FRS102 SORP).
This is only included in the SoFA once the charity has provided the related goods or
services or met the performance related conditions.
Donated goods are measured at fair value (the amount for which the asset could be
exchanged) unless impractical to do so.
In the case of performance related grants, income must only be recognised to the extent
that the charity has provided the specified goods or services as entitlement to the grant
only occurs when the performance related conditions are met (5.16 FRS 102 SORP).
Legacies
Legacies are included in the SOFA when receipt is probable, that is, when there has
been grant of probate, the executors have established that there are sufficient assets in
the estate and any conditions attached to the legacy are either within the control of the
charity or have been met.
Government grants
The charity has received government grants in the reporting period
Tax reclaims on
donations and gifts
Gift Aid receivable is included in income when there is a valid declaration from the
donor. Any Gift Aid amount recovered on a donation is considered to be part of that gift
and is treated as an addition to the same fund as the initial donation unless the donor or
the terms of the appeal have specified otherwise.
Gifts in kind for use by the charity are included in the SoFA as income from donations
when receivable.
Support costs
The charity has incurred expenditure on support costs.
Donated goods for resale are measured at fair value on initial recognition, which is the
expected proceeds from sale less the expected costs of sale, and recognised in 'Income
from other trading activities' with the corresponding stock recognised in the balance
sheet. On its sale the value of stock is charged against 'Income from other trading
activities' and the proceeds from sale are also recognised as 'Income from other trading
activities'.
Goods donated for on-going use by the charity are recognised as tangible fixed assets
and included in the SoFA as incoming resources when receivable.

2.4 ASSETS
Intangible fixed assets
Support costs include central functions and have been allocated to activity cost
categories on a basis consistent with the use of resources, eg allocating property costs
by floor areas, or per capita, staff costs by the time spent and other costs by their usage.
Grants with performance
conditions
Where the charity gives a grant with conditions for its payment being a specific level of
service or output to be provided, such grants are only recognised in the SoFA once the
recipient of the grant has provided the specified service or output.
Grants payable without
performance conditions
Where there are no conditions attaching to the grant that enables the donor charity to
realistically avoid the commitment, a liability for the full funding obligation must be
recognised.
The charity has intangible fixed assets, that is, non-monetary assets that do not have
physical substance but are identifiable and are controlled by the charity through custody
or legal rights. The amortisation rates and methods used are disclosed in note 9.5
They are valued at cost.
This includes any realised or unrealised gains or losses on the sale of investments and
any gain or loss resulting from revaluing investments to market value at the end of the
year.
Income from interest,
royalties and dividends
This is included in the accounts when receipt is probable and the amount receivable can
be measured reliably.
Income from membership
subscriptions
Membership subscriptions received in the nature of a gift are recognised in Donations
and Legacies.
Membership subscriptions which gives a member the right to buy services or other
benefits are recognised as income earned from the provision of goods and services as
income from charitable activities.
2.3 EXPENDITURE AND LIABILITIES
Liability recognition
Liabilities are recognised where it is more likely than not that there is a legal or
constructive obligation committing the charity to pay out resources and the amount of
the obligation can be measured with reasonable certainty.
Investment gains and
losses
The charity accounts for basic financial instruments on initial recognition as per
paragraph 10.7 FRS102 SORP. Subsequent measurement is as per paragraphs 11.17
to 11.19, FRS102 SORP.
Tangible fixed assets for
use by charity
The depreciation rates and methods used are disclosed in note 9.2.
Governance and support
costs
Support costs have been allocated between governance costs and other support.
Governance costs comprise all costs involving public accountability of the charity and its
compliance with regulation and good practice.
Settlement of insurance
claims
Insurance claims are only included in the SoFA when the general income recognition
criteria are met (5.10 to 5.12 FRS102 SORP) and are included as an item of other
income in the SoFA.
They are valued at cost.
Volunteer help
These are capitalised if they can be used for more than one year, and cost at least
The value of any voluntary help received is not included in the accounts but is described
in the trustees’ annual report.

Deferred income
No material item of deferred income has been included in the accounts.
