## **Young Masters Visual Art School (YMVAS) Creative Hub**

## **Charity Details**

Charity number: 1174558 Address: 2 Upper Ashley Lane BD17 7DA Telephone Number: 07753513869

The trustees of the charity are as follows: Dr Virginija Kuosaite-Knowles (appointed 7 September 2017 as Chair of Trustees), Georgia Jean Marie Griffiths (appointed 7 September 2017, resigned 27 November 2020), Amanda Louise Gill (appointed 28 November 2018), Leon Paul Oakley (appointed 28 November 2018).

## **Governing Document**

YMVAS is governed by its Constitution of a Charitable Incorporated Organisation dated 7 September 2017. It is registered as a charity with the Charity Commission. We have assessed what skills are needed across the board, and sought help from external bodies to recruit more business aware trustees where needed. In addition to this we have sought guidance on the responsibilities of our trustees, and made this available to them. Anyone over the age of 18 can become a member of the trustees.

## **Organisation and Charitable Aims**

YMVAS is a charitable after-school art school opened for children and young people 4 to 16 years old. We teach painting, drawing, sculpture, art history and much more. The work our students create is regularly displayed at free public exhibitions locally and abroad. We provide pre-GCSE and GCSE level qualifications through Trinity College London Arts Award certification. YMVAS supports autistic, disabled and gifted young people.

YMVAS encourages social engagement of children and young people through the teaching of art and design. It promotes creativity, curiosity and confidence in its students, and has contributed to a to notable improvement in many students' attainment in other areas of their wider education.

Over the past seven years YMVAS has grown from a Limited Company teaching around sixty students to a recognised Supplementary School and Charity with its own premises, teaching upwards of 160 students.

As Head of school Dr Virginija Kuosaite-Knowles has overseen this transition, and has transitioned herself from being the principal teacher to maintaining more of a management and guidance position through her role as Chair of Trustees. While she still actively volunteers and teaches when and where needed, leads on lesson planning, administration and Child Welfare, YMVAS now has a dedicated team of 3 trustees and six teaching staff.

This year YMVAS continued to adhere to NRCSE Safeguarding quality mark, high standards of management, teaching and child welfare. YMVAS installed termly formalised staff, student and trustee evaluation and feedback sessions as a part of this, and made sure that good communication was maintained throughout the academic year.

For students, YMVAS continued with Trinity College London Arts Award, and started the courses in Photography in addition to Illustration and Painting, which are dedicated towards Silver/GCSE qualification for older students. For home schooled children we expanded provision, adding drama and creative writing sessions.

## **Chair’s Report**

Young Masters Visual Art School is a result of dedicated work of Dr Virginija Kuosaite-Knowles and her team. The charity has evolved from Idle Art Studio Ltd through amount of charitable work the company has provided since it has been established in March 2014. Relevant developments of the company have been outlined in a Charity Report year ending 31 August 2018 and 2019.

## _Financial Position 2019-2020_

Our charity’s vulnerable financial position, due to the cost of the premises at Merchants Quay, has been outlined in a Charity Report 2019. Fortunately, we found an affordable alternative home at Ashley House, Upper Ashley Lane in Shipley and moved in March 2020, expecting to continue operating from there for the upcoming 10 years. This move would have allowed us to build resilience and reserves and gain further respect in the community. We refurbished the premises in February 2020 and successfully moved and started teaching from there on the 2 March only to close on the 20 March due to the COVID restrictions. We continued our hard work regardless.

After falling under mandatory closure of the physical school in March 2020, we continued teaching online. As we recognised the hardship of families during pandemic, we left the payments to parents’ discretion. We applied for the Government COVID £10K grant and Arts Council Recovery Fund £16.5K. We also received £10K donation from Idle Art Studio Ltd. Without this additional support we would have closed.

We lost a half of our income in April-June 2020 and a staggering 70% in August 2020. With the grants we received we: 1) bought equipment and created an online teaching platform running Zoom classes twice a day, 2) provided income support for freelance teachers, bought and distributed art packs to homes, 3) established and built new collaborations and YMVAS portfolio of 120 new online classes in order to support _Let’s Create_ aims, 4) made necessary purchases to maintain COVID safe premises for a new academic year. We also kept £5,250 from the Recovery Fund as income support, and with the remaining Government grant formed a reserve of £17,000, which was essential for the resilience of our organisation.

**Festivals & Exhibitions:** In Summer 2019 we worked with Glenaire Primary School, Wycliffe Primary School and YMVAS students to produce _Textiles, Technology & Time_ mixed media canvas, a commission by Saltaire Festival charity for Saltaire Festival September 2019. The three large canvas were displayed for the festival period in Higher Ground Café, Saltaire.

We also started a term with Late Summer Exhibition, which usually takes place in July. However, this term we decided to hold the Spring-Summer 2019 artwork exhibition on 11 September. The exhibition was well received by parents and students, with the Lord Mayor of Bradford Cllr Zafar Ali attending the event.

YMVAS Winter term exhibition was held at school premises at Merchants Quay on 23 February with the Lord Mayor of Bradford Cllr Doreen Lee attending the event.

**Achievements:** Martin House Charity Calendar 2020 competition: YMVAS won three prizes- Fiona, 11 February winner, Gabriela, 10 June Runner up and Nihal, 10 July Winner. Celebrated at Walker Morris offices in Leeds in November 2019.

Lord Mayor of Bradford Christmas card competition: Jo, 13 was a winner for YMVAS and we celebrated this occasion on 12 December at Bradford City Hall.

**Arts Award:** In September 2019 we enrolled 20 young people in the programme, which was designed for older students to achieve GCSE equivalent Silver Arts Award. The funding came from the National Arts Education Charity _The Arts Society_ , and we received an additional supportive grant towards Silver/GCSE delivery from _IVE_ , Leeds for Home Educated and autistic children. We were able to help them gain Level 2 (GCSE) qualification which then allowed them to choose future education at a college level. Despite 2020 lockdown restrictions and online teaching we succeeded to get 14 students through the process to achieved Silver/GCSE qualification In the Arts in February 2021. This qualification proved to be vital for a number of students to move into further education. This clearly had a huge positive impact to young people’s life. The students’ hard work and art teachers’ dedication has inspired us to create more courses for a new academic year.

**Skill-share Sundays:** Our guest artists this year were: Yorkshire artist Caroline Rilatt, drawing the local scenes from Saltaire village, and mixed media landscape professional artist Miriam Laville.

**Curriculum for academic year 2019-2020:** New academic year started with the observational & mixed media drawing of local Bradford buildings in style of local artist Clare Caulfield. Continued into 3D recycled sculpture in style of British sculptor Anthony Caro. This was extended in to an observational drawing from 3D and abstract painting. End of Winter term was dedicated to interior design, using observational drawing, collage and painting, following David Hockney or Henri Matisse style.

Spring term started at new premises with observational drawing of endangered animals and watercolours of British birds. However, the teaching was interrupted four weeks into the term and we moved to teach online, one hour every single day of the lockdown by creating affordable, manageable, variable, fun family one-hour lessons, 120 hours of online teaching in total from 20 March to the end of school year in July.

**New classes:** This academic year 2019-2020 YMVAS started and expanded pre-school/KS1 age provision in form of Saturday Mini Masters classes; 11+ provision in form of Sunday Bronze/Silver classes in Painting and Illustration (Arts Award at GCSE level); family classes in Painting and Book Making. After a very successful and popular a day-long Christmas Workshop The Legend of the Winter Bird, in addition to art we started Drama & Art classes for home schooled children. “Having this place in our area made a huge difference! As a home Ed family, my boys benefit highly from their classes where they receive a professional guidance, warm treatment and stimulation for their creativity. Always coming out with a smiley face and excited for the next class!” Andra Mihaela.

When the lockdown started to ease and face to face classes became possible again in July 2020, we continued our online daily provision, but also invited students to try a couple of new courses at school: Photography and Graphic Design. Photography course proved to be very successful and popular and continued in to academic year 2020-2021. In July 2020, we also were able to hold face to face Sunday Silver classes, which helped enormously for our students to complete and achieve Silver Arts challenge. This was enhanced further with a mixed media face to face workshop by Miriam Laville.

**#Beasmilemaker:** YMVAS was a part of Bradford Smilemakers initiative, funded by the local council in response to the lockdown. YMVAS created Smilemakers Facebook group, created, laminated and co-ordinated postage of cheerful artwork for The Senior Power charity to be distributed in local care homes. Over 300 artworks have been distributed in **#response** to engage with lonely people during the lockdown.

**Lockdown Summer School 2020:** A free online YMVAS Summer School was funded by Arts Council England and comprised of two one-hour lessons, delivered one in the morning and another one in the afternoon from Monday to Friday for four weeks in August 2020. Offering drawing, painting, illustration, collage, and creative writing, 40 hours in total. “Young Masters is just amazing. The staff are so friendly, encouraging and supportive. During lockdown Virginija and her team put on Zoom sessions every day! These sessions kept me and my daughter sane. It was like art therapy. Good for the soul! Thank you for your wonderful school. Art helps to keep reminding us of the good things and all the beauty in the world” Cecile Besrest-Buttler.
