## Objectives 

The objectives of the Stanmore Choral Society are the study and practice of choral music in order to foster the public knowledge and appreciation of such music by means of public performance. 

## Management 

The Stanmore Choral Society is constituted as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation governed by a constitution (Association Model having Members in addition to Trustees) and registered by the Charities Commission on 7[th] September 2017 

The trustees are appointed by the membership, normally at the AGM to serve for a fixed term of office as specified in the constitution.

## Activities and achievements for the year 

For Stanmore Choral Society, the 2021-22 season has been a time of considerable change. After the difficult years of the Covid pandemic, live music making was at last able to resume, with the option to join rehearsals on Zoom. 

The three concerts of the year were led by three different musical directors. Firstly, Harry Bradford, on his final concert with Stanmore, led an enjoyable rendering of extracts from _The Messiah_ which reminded members of how inspiring it is to sing with a whole choir, and two lovely soloists, Sapphire Armitage and Olivia Shotton. The second half of the concert featured carols both new and familiar, with a large audience enjoying playing their part in the music making. As always, the children stole the show with their contribution.

The spring concert, led by James Mooney-Dutton, featured Mozart’s _Coronation Mass,_ a challenge for the choir which proved very rewarding. This was accompanied by Mozart’s _Ave Verum Corpus_ , Vivaldi’s _Gloria_ and Haydn’s _Insanae Et Vanae Curae_ .  The line-up on the night was completed by soprano Tara Bungard, mezzo-soprano Lucy Taylor, tenor Nicholas Keay and bass Charles Pott. 

The music-making was shared with a large audience in the church, and watched on Zoom by those who couldn’t be there in person. 

For the summer concert, the choir was delighted to welcome Alexander Turner as the new musical director.  He ensured that rehearsals were positive and productive, as he led singers into the challenging  rhythms of Chilcott’s _Jazz Mass_ .  The accompaniment of a jazz trio, Chris Pott on percussion, Oscar Ho on double bass and James Mooney-Dutton on piano added to the lively atmosphere.  The concert also included Shearing’s settings of a number of Shakespeare’s songs and sonnets, from the wistful _“Who is Sylvia?_ to a rousing version of _“Fie on Sinful Fantasy”._ The third piece was Todd’s _Three Jazz Hymns”,_ a new take on some old favourites. 

Choir rehearsals continued to take place in the Church Hall at St William of York, and the hospitality of Rev. Canon Michael Munnelly, followed by his successor Fr. Jonathan Goodall was appreciated. Concerts were held at St Mary the Virgin, and the choir enjoyed the use of this lovely venue.  There was sadness at the departure of our President, Father Edward Lewis but warm wishes for a good retirement.  As always, the choir is really appreciative of the work of James.  He is more than the choir accompanist – he once again stood in between musical directors and kept the music flowing, as well as being a font of knowledge on all things musical. 

The choir always depends on a lot of members to keep the music going, and this year was no exception.  Thanks go to Gillian Goldsmith, who has been the treasurer for nine years, and taken the

choir through some difficult years. Choir members have appreciated
her hard work and cheerful attitude. and will miss her when she
moves to a choir nearer home. Also standing down is chair Mo
Dunning, who has given 11 year5 of Service in the chair and taken on
so much to keep the choir running; fortunately, she will still be
singing with the sopranos and offering help at events. So many
people have taken on tasks during the year to ensure 5traightfDrward
running of rehearsals and a warm welcome at concerts.
The disruptions caused by Covid have left the choir with some
challenges. The programme for 2022-23 has some very exciting
music. starting with a Come and Sing in October- hopefully choir
members will continue to play their part in encouraging new
members and in helping to keep the choir running smoothly.

## Financial Performance 2021-22 

With some caution but enthusiasm we returned to face-to-face rehearsals, but not at the usual St William of York as it was undergoing repairs. For the Autumn term we rehearsed in the lovely St Michael & All Angels’ Church in Harrow Wealdstone. It was more expensive, however, so our rehearsal costs increased.  Most of our members returned and some who didn’t attend for the entire year continued to pay the full subscription for the year. I want to thank them for their generosity.  On our books we had 43 members, although some only joined for a term. 

We performed just one concert in the Autumn term, an extended Christmas concert which was well attended.  We made a very small loss of £31. We made a larger loss of £1,003 for the Easter concert. This is because it required 4 soloists and is in keeping with the tradition performing a more expensive concert at Easter. We also hired a small organ as the choir had kindly donated funds for it in 2020.  James, who competently took over from Harry in the spring term, mitigated the higher cost of the concert by taking some rehearsals without an accompanist. Our thanks go to James for ably conducting and accompanying the rehearsals at the same time. The summer concert was the first for our new conductor, Alexander Turner. It departed from the choir’s usual style, being a shorter concert with no interval and refreshments were served at the end. Consequently, we only charged £10 a ticket, instead of our usual £16. The choir made a loss of £682.  Given that covid is still here, the audience numbers at all concerts were understandably lower than normal, but the audience sizes were nevertheless respectable. 

It was not appropriate to hold any fund-raising events, nor to carry out previous activities such as raffles and refreshments during the rehearsals so there were fewer opportunities to raise funds. I

claimed for gift aid for 2020-21 and 2021-22 and so we are up to date with it. 

We made an overall loss of £1,259, leaving the choir with a balance of £3,122.  The loss is due to factors such as a more expensive rehearsal venue for one term, no fund-raising events, reduced revenue at the summer concert because of cheaper tickets and reduced audience sizes at all the concerts. 

Next year the finances will be tight as unfortunately the predicted number of choir members will be just 33.  I have proposed that the subscriptions are raised to £165, which is still less than inflation (which is very high). The committee have accepted the subscription level of £165.  In addition, the choir will be formally asked if they want to donate on top of that. 

I have left the choir to join a more local one, and so I have resigned as treasurer. I have enjoyed my time immensely and I wish Stanmore Choral Society every success.
