Report of the Trustees

For the Period Ended 31 October 2024

The trustees present their report with the financial statements of the company for the period ended 31 October 2024.

The information set out on page 1 forms part of this report.

OBJECTIVES AND REVIEW OF PROGRESS AND ACHIEVEMENTS

Objectives set for the Financial Year 1st November 2023 to 31st October 2024 and how these have been met

To promote equality and diversity

To attend at least 4 Schools/Education providers and provide support to pride festivals and/or awareness days

We have exceeded this objective with attendance to Clevedon School, Gordano School, Priory Academy for the Day of SEND, and the hosting of 3 North Somerset Community Pride Events in Portishead, Clevedon & Nailsea in June 2024.

We also attended and supported Taunton Pride, the Pill Music Festival, Sporting fest 2024, Sporting Weston's Open Day in Cleeve, the Broadoak School Festival of Culture for the second year running. We also attended and supported the 1st Backwell Summer Fun day hosted at Backwell School.

Please see the NSLGBT+ Forum Timeline for 2023 to 2024 for a detailed breakdown of how this objective has been achieved and exceeded.

To continue to link in with local BME support services and providers in the area to provide and support a "joined-up" approach to the needs and interests of the LGBT+ Community within the BME Community. The North Somerset LGBT+ Forum continues to build and maintain a strong relationship with Race Equality North Somerset and are recognised by this fellow Charity as the "Go to" resource for all LGBT+ Related Matters within North Somerset for the BME Community that approaches RENS.

Please see the NSLGBT+ Forum Timeline for 2023 to 2024 for a detailed breakdown of how this objective has been achieved and exceeded.

To continue to provide the community with an accessible safe space for our groups and smaller fundraising events to take place and encourage individuals to "drop in '' during weekdays and weekends to access support and signposting.

We have exceeded this objective as we relocated our HQ which was based at 68 Meadow Street, to a larger venue across the road, 67 Meadow Street in August 2024. Our location has been fully established since March 2022 and is open 4 out of 7 days during the week (Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays & Sundays) for drop ins, support, signposting, and where we also have held our Support Groups and smaller fundraising Jumble Sales. As we now have a larger venue, we are able to host and hold multiple events and welcome more individuals into our Safe Space than previously.

Please see the NSLGBT+ Forum Timeline for 2023 to 2024 for a detailed breakdown of how this objective has been achieved and exceeded.

To continue to promote our HQ as a safe space for individuals to report hate Crime, where all reports are considered and heard, and to promote to lesser-known or utilised methods of Hate Crime Reporting to ensure that hate Crime Figures for North Somerset are true, accurate and reflect what is "Actually" happening in our area.

Previously all of our Promotional Leaflets on the back panel included the importance of reporting Hate Crime and how to identify this. We have since produced a specific LGBT+ Hate Crime Leaflet which goes into more detail about all types of Hate Crime and how to report this using various methods.

All Trustees & Volunteers who cover our HQ during weekdays and weekends make themselves available to anyone who comes into HQ with a question, query or issue and will always look to escalate to our Safeguarding Lead (Steve Winter-Gray) any enquiries where there is a concern that links to a potential Hate Crime or incident.

Please see the NSLGBT+ Forum Timeline for 2023 to 2024 for a detailed breakdown of how this objective has been achieved and exceeded.

The North Somerset LGBT+ has the following methods of contact for any enquiries or messages to be sent to ourselves, to include Hate Incidents:

Phone (Switchboard Covered and a specific option is available to report Hate Crime which goes direct to Avon & Somerset Police)

In person (HQ Opening Hours: Mondays, Wednesdays & Fridays - 12:00pm till 5:00pm, Sundays 12:00pm till 4:00pm)

Online Forum & Discussion Boards (Moderated by DBS Checked Trustees & Volunteers)

OBJECTIVES AND REVIEW OF PROGRESS AND ACHIEVEMENTS CONT.

Two of the Charity Trustees work for Curo to support the delivery of these services across North Somerset and cascade information, resources and support to the Trustees & Volunteers of the North Somerset LGBT+ Forum to ensure these are fully embedded in the range of activities and groups that we run for the LGBT+ Community.

For greater context, Curo is a West of England housing association, Curo provides great homes and high quality care and support services across the region.

They're one of the largest landlords in the South West, with a diverse portfolio of affordable and market rented homes.

They own and manage more than 13,000 homes; properties that their 25,000 residents call home. they're building hundreds of new homes every year for rent and sale.

They own a range of property, from starter homes to Grade I Listed Buildings, in locations from rural villages to city centres. They have an extensive long-term development and land acquisition programme, working to build hundreds of new homes every year.

They invest in neighbourhood services to make the areas where they support communities thrive, sustainable places where people want to live and work.

They provide award-winning support services to a wide range of residents, including homeless young people and families, older and disabled people, and those affected by mental health issues or memory loss.

They support customers into education and work, and offer apprenticeships, training and graduate placement programmes.

They are West of England specialists. They provide homes and services across Bath, Bristol and beyond. They currently operate across eight local authority areas, which are mainly in the West of England. This area covers Bath & North East Somerset, Bristol, North Somerset, South Gloucestershire, Mendip and West Wiltshire. They also have a small number of homes in Cotswold District.

As a housing association they have no paid shareholders. They create profit for purpose, reinvesting the surpluses from their commercial house-building business into their core social purpose.

Report of the Trustees

For the Period Ended 31 October 2024

OBJECTIVES AND REVIEW OF PROGRESS AND ACHIEVEMENTS CONT. About us - The North Somerset LGBT+ Forum

We are the North Somerset LGBT+ Forum...

The North Somerset LGBT+ Forum has been a registered charity since 2017. Our current chair Steve WinterGray joined the team in 2019, bringing the charity to a wider audience through a variety of exciting fundraising events, community drop-ins and activities.

The Forum is proud to be independently run and we are not affiliated with any other LGBT+ organisations.

Whilst the Forum supports local LGBT+ organisations in their aims, we remain dedicated to supporting the whole district of North Somerset rather than a single location. We are also determined that our activities, events and HQ remain affordable (often free), accessible and fun, and rely solely on donations and charitable grants to continue operating. It is in this way the North Somerset LGBT+ Forum is unique in what we offer the communities of North Somerset.

Who We Are

We are a locally based registered charity formed to support members of the LGBT+ community, to include their friends and families within North Somerset.

Our Aim

North Somerset LGBT+ Forum is a voluntary organisation whose aims are to provide a voice for the LGBT+ community of North Somerset and to be the primary organisation for LGBT+ matters within this locality.

Our Vision

Our vision is that North Somerset is fully inclusive of and engaged with the LGBT+ population and that North Somerset is a friendly and welcoming place to live in and visit for members of the LGBT+ community.

Our Mission

To provide a platform for LGBT+ voices to be heard through activities, drop-in sessions, social activities and social media. To contribute to the development and maintenance of LGBT+ inclusive services in North Somerset through engagement with statutory, non-statutory bodies and organisations. To listen and respond to real-time feedback from members of our community, including our allies and those individuals from other marginalised communities regarding the support needed within the North Somerset area and respond accordingly within the capacity of the charity and the trustees and volunteers who support us.

Our HQ & Weekly Drop Ins

Our old HQ, located at 68 Meadow Street, Weston-Super-Mare, North Somerset, BS23 1QN, and our newly relocated HQ, located at 67 Meadow Street, Weston-Super-Mare, North Somerset, BS23 1QL is open during the week on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 12:00pm till 5:00pm for anyone to drop in and grab a drink and biscuit with the team and have a chat about the support services that we can signpost individuals to.

During our weekday opening hours, between 12:00pm and 3:00pm all members of the community are welcome to come into our HQ to meet the team, receive help, support, and signposting, or just stop for a coffee and a chat.

Between the hours of 3:00pm and 5:00pm, we offer a Closed Space to specific catchments within our community who make require some additional support:

Mondays: 50+: 50+ is a social drop-in that meets every week at our HQ. 50+ is for community members aged 50 and over, of all identities, to meet with each other and socialise.

Wednesdays: Family+: Family+ is drop-in for teenagers and young adults who identify as LGBT+ and/or neurodivergent, to socialise with others. It is also an opportunity for parents, guardians, carers and relatives to ask questions in a safe space. Supported by Bridging the Gap Together!

Fridays: Trans+: Trans+ is a weekly social drop-in for community members who identify as transgender, non-binary or are perhaps questioning their gender. We use 'trans' as an umbrella term for those who are transgender, non-binary, genderqueer, genderfluid, agender, are of non-Western gender identities and those who have a trans history.

In addition, on Sundays we open our HQ on Meadow Street from 12:00pm till 4:00pm for an "Open House" session called Coffee, Cake & Chatter, which is a space available and open to all members of the LGBT+ Community, our Allies, and anyone else who shares our values. Anyone between the ages of 13 years of age upwards can come into our HQ unaccompanied to use our space, chill out, chat to the team, play games, do crafts, or just "Be".

Individuals under the age of 13 are also welcome to join us on Sundays, but must be accompanied by a parent/guardian or carer, or a responsible adult over the age of 18.

The North Somerset LGBT+ Forum also continues to support the LGBT+ community through our online forums and discussion boards moderated by our DBS checked Trustees and Volunteers.

Our Events

Rumble in the Jumble

Calling all bargain hunters! If you love pre-loved items, the North Somerset LGBT+ Forum holds regular jumble sale stalls crammed with donated goodies. These events are facilitated by our trustees and volunteers and take place at our HQ on Meadow Street, 10am-4pm on Sundays prior to a Bank Holiday Monday. This year we delivered our last ever Rumble in The Jumble, after 5 years of delivering all these events. The North Somerset LGBT+ Forum will be now focussing on alternative funding streams to replace our Rumble in The Jumble Events

North Somerset Community Prides (Portishead, Clevedon, & Nailsea)

For the first time ever, the North Somerset LGBT+ Forum stepped forward, recognising the lack of a Pride event in North Somerset due to the absence of Pride in Weston, and Weston-Super-Mare Pride, to deliver something entirely different.

"Community Pride Events Across North Somerset"

Utilising the infrastructure of local Pubs in the Portishead, Clevedon & Nailsea areas of North Somerset, the North Somerset LGBT+ Forum were able to plan, organise and execute 3 Community Pride events in these smaller North Somerset Towns which were entirely self-funded from local authority grants, charity fundraising events, and stallholder fees:

Nailsea: Saturday, June 8th, 12 pm to 6 pm at the Ring O' Bells. Portishead: Sunday, June 23rd, 12 pm to 6 pm at Portishead Youth Centre, Harbour Road. Clevedon: Saturday, June 29th, 12 pm to 6 pm at the Old Inn, Walton Road.

GAYme

GAYme is a monthly LGBT+ board game night open to everyone to enjoy, in a fully accessible venue. There are board games, card games and even computer games! Don't worry if you are attending alone, as our volunteers will make sure you feel at home. There’s also a Tuck Shop on site! Please note, under-13s need to be accompanied by an adult. You can find the Bridging the Gap Together! hub at 59 - 61 Meadow Street, WestonSuper-Mare, BS23 1QL. Entry is free, and there’s no need to book.

Drag Diva Lock Down Live

These events saw a large number of Drag Queens, LGBT+ performers and their amazing fans descend onto Weston for a night of loud, proud and hilarious acts and performances.

August 2021 saw the North Somerset LGBT+ Forum collaborate with the founder and creator of the Facebook Group, "Drag Diva Lock Down '' Paul Doble to help support and host Drag Diva Lock Down Live, on Westons iconic Grand Pier. This event raised a total of over £1700 towards the work we do.

Drag Diva Lock Down returned to Weston in 2023 and was held at the iconic and historic Winter Gardens Pavilion and Ballroom on Saturday 4th February 2023. This event raised a total of £1418.28

In 2024, the location for what was expected to be the last Drag Diva Lock Down Live event changed to the amazing Grand Atlantic Hotel, located on Weston-Super-Mare's Seafront.

This event raised a total of £3086.07! - This was split between The RNLI (40%) and the North Somerset LGBT+ Forum (60%) - £1756.46

Believe it or not, the event in 2025 has not only already been suggested, but the dates have been booked to take place on Saturday 5th April 2025. Watch this space for next years update.

-To hold three Community Pride Events across three main towns in the district (Clevedon, Nailsea and Portishead), as well as delivering and promoting three additional events at each location.

-To continue to promote our HQ as a safe space for individuals to report hate crime, where all reports are considered and heard, and to signpost and encourage hate crime reporting to ensure that hate crime figures for North Somerset are true, accurate and reflect what is "actually" happening in our area.

Statement of Trustees' responsibilities

For the Period Ended 31 October 2024

Charity law requires to prepare the Trustees' Report and financial statements for each financial year which give a true view of the state of affairs of the Charity and of its financial activities for that period. In preparing those Financial Statements the Trustees are required to:

a) Select suitable accounting policies and then apply them consistently:

b) Make judgments and estimates that are responsible and prudent;

c) State whether the policies adopted are in accordance with SORP (FRS 102) and with applicable accounting standards, subject to any material departures disclosed and explained in the Financial Statements;

d) Prepare the Financial Statements on the going concern basis unless it is inappropriate to assume that the Charity will continue operating.

The Trustees are responsible for keeping proper accounting records which disclose with reasonable accuracy at any time the financial position of the Charity and to enable them to ensure that the Financial Statements comply with the Charities Act 2011. They are also responsible for safeguarding the assets of the Charity and hence for taking reasonable steps for the prevention and detection of fraud or other irregularities.

The financial statements have been prepared under the historical cost convention.

Income

All income is recognised in the Statement of Financial Activities once the charity has entitlement to the funds, it is probable that the income will be received and the amount can be measured reliably.

Expenditure

Liabilities are recognised as expenditure as soon as there is a legal or constructive obligation committing the charity to that expenditure, it is probable that a transfer of economic benefits will be required in settlement and the amount of the obligation can be measured reliably. Expenditure is accounted for on an accruals basis and has been classified under headings that aggregate all cost related to the category. Where costs cannot be directly attributed to particular headings they have been allocated to activities on a basis consistent with the use of resources.

Tangible fixed assets

Depreciation is provided at the following annual rates in order to write off each asset over its estimated useful life at a rate of 25% reducing balance.

Taxation

The charity is exempt from tax on its charitable activities.

Fund accounting

Unrestricted funds can be used in accordance with the charitable objectives at the discretion of the trustees.

Restricted funds can only be used for particular restricted purposes within the objects of the charity. Restrictions arise when specified by the donor or when funds are raised for particular restricted purposes.

Further explanation of the nature and purpose of each fund is included in the notes to the financial statements.

Hire purchase and leasing commitments

The interest element of these obligations is charged to the Statement of Financial Activities over the relevant period. The capital element of the future payments is treated as a liability.

Rentals paid under operating leases are charged to the Statement of Financial Activities on a straight line basis over the period of the lease.
