WOW, what a year it has been for us all at L.A.B. In the short time since our previous annual report, so much has changed, and all of it for the better.
Whilst our work was coming to an end in Mexico in June/July, August of 2022 saw our return to Madagascar. After 4 years of absence, it was incredible to finally return to the big island.
In Madagascar, our mission remained the same... Alongside the various free education and sports programs we delivered, our most significant and overriding objective, wa sto create the first facility for the education and support of people with disabilities in Nosy Be, Madagascar. Thankfully, on the 17th of March 2023, the Sunrise Centre was opened.
Between our work in Madagascar, we also visited Kenya in May 2023. We worked in Eldoret town, where we investigated the potential for a future project, given the ongoing poor treatment of street children at the hands of local authorities.
But, our work has not been all outside of the UK & Europe, we have also made some impact here too! Through our partnership programs, we have connected with X1 special needs school in the UK, X1 Primary school in Dublin, Ireland, X1 primary school in Barcelona, Spain and finally our partnership with Bishop Grosseteste University in Lincoln, UK, where we welcomed X12 SENDI students who worked as volunteers to our Sunrise Centre.
With all that we have achieved this year, we are more motivated than ever to continue our work across the world, bringing free education and sports projects to areas where it's most needed.

In the 2022 - 2023 period, we raised a total of **£14,932,** which was raised through personal donations, grants and our partnership with Bishop Grossetese University. In March of 2023, we received the news that the Aenionan Foundation wished to support L.A.B with **£10,000** in quarterly donations, to be used towards our Madagascar project. To date, this is the largest commitment to funding that we have ever received.
Within the same period, we also spent a total of **£15,099** , of which **88%** was spent directly upon one of our 3 projects - Madagascar, Mexico or Kenya. Surprisingly, in the same period of time, we also lost a total of **1.4%** of funding (£222) to transactional fees when withdrawing funds overseas. Recognising this, we have found alternative methods to transfer funds overseas. In total, our 2022/2023 funding was spent in the following ways:

## **MADAGASCAR**
## **The Sunrise Project**
Our work in Madagascar takes place on the island of Nosy Be, in the North West of the country. Here, we bring free education and sports projects to people in need. In March of 2023, we opened the Sunrise Centre, which is the first centre for the education and support of people with disabilities in Nosy Be.
At the Sunrise Centre, we have created a unique system, where we employ the parents of our students alongside local teachers to create a happy, safe and prosperous atmosphere. Since our opening, we have achieved and maintained a 100% satisfaction rate among students and parents. Despite having no framework or guidance to follow, our curriculum has proven to be a real success at the Centre. We follow a life skills / basic education program, which focuses on teaching the students the most essential skills. By working in close partnership with the parents too, we also create X2 personal objectives per student which we aim to achieve over the course of the academic year.
Alongside the Sunrise Centre, we have also created a program called 'Ny Fianarantsika' (Our Education) where we target out-ofschool children across Nosy Be, particularly those who are involved in child labour, and bring the free education to them. Each week, 80+ unschooled children in 2 key areas across Nosy Be receive an education thanks to this program.
Additionally, from December 2022 - April 2023, we hosted an English as a foreign language course open to both adults and children in Nosy Be. The course proved to be extremely popular and well received by the local population in Nosy Be. Our average attendance on this course was 61, with 51% of those attending being female and 54% being under 18 years old. At the end of the course, we hosted a basic exam, where 65% of those who tried, passed with more than 60% in reading, writing speaking and listening
Going forward, we aim to continue with the Sunrise Centre and Ny Fianarantsika programs, whilst also opening up an advanced English course for those who passed our basic course.
## **KENYA The Street Children of Eldoret**
Since the creation of L.A.B in 2017, we have always had a vested interest in supporting the street children of Kenya, particularly in the town of Eldoret, where there a large number of children concentrated into one town.
We originally visited Eldoret in 2019, with the intention of creating a future project there. However, we have never managed to get anything off the ground. Throughout the entirety of this time, we have maintained contact with local partner organisations in Eldoret.
In early 2023, our partner organisations reached out to us to make us aware of alleged abuse taking place against Eldoret's street child community. Upon hearing this, in May 2023, we returned to Eldoret with the intention of understanding what was truly happening.
Our return to Eldoret was nothing short of shocking...
Many of the street children that we visited had been physically abused - We saw evidence of recent beatings against them - Broken limbs and open wounds were commonplace. To help raise awareness of this situation, we have made a short documentary named 'What happened to the Street Children of Eldoret?' which has been released to various media channels.
To raise further awareness of the situation, we are also working with journalists at The Africa Report, who are soon to be publishing an article based on the evidence that we have provided them.
Going forward, we are unsure of what our future work in Kenya may hold - We are aiming to provide occasional small support to our partners on the ground, but in terms of creating a more permanent project, it is looking unlikely at this time.
## **MEXICO**
## **Escuelita Project**
As highlighted in our 2021/2022 annual report, when working in Mexico, we created a unique project to help support children who are out of school. Beginning in the community of Mazunte, we started the 'Escuelita' (Little School) project, where we provide free education across basic literacy and maths skills to children who, otherwise, would not be receiving an education.
going forward, this has inspired us to create a future project in Mexico and Central America, where we aim to create a number of _Escuelitas_ across the country.
The concept for the project is as follows:
• We identify an area where there is a high number of children that are not attending school.
• We find a suitable location to host the escuelita 2-3 times per week.
• We employ a local teacher and do an informal inscription for all those who wish to attend.
• Free classes begin - Students learn essential academic skills - reading, writing & and numbers, whilst also doing arts, sports & story activities.
• Student progress is monitored and evaluated, and personal targets are set for the student to 'graduate'
• Parents regularly attend & assist with the classes, eventually creating a teacher & parent co-operative.
• We seek local businesses to support the local escuelita cooperative so that their work can continue.
We intend to begin seeking funding for this project towards the end of 2023.
## **GOING FORWARD**
## **2023 - 2024**
In the 2023-2024 period, we intend to continue on the same trajectory as 2022 - 2023. Whilst still prioritising our Madagascar project, particularly the Sunrise Centre, we also aim to seek funding from other areas to allow us to create new projects across the world.
We intend to create partnerships with more schools and universities across the world, where we can connect students to ignite cross-cultural learning.
We intend for other organisations to take inspiration from the work we're doing, using our work as a 'blueprint' to be followed when implementing their own programs.
We intend to increase our presence in the UK, where we can create further partnerships, support more people and seek new sources of income to be used on future projects.
All in all, this year has been fantastic for all of us at L.A.B. Our greatest year to date, we can now only hope that this momentum remains as we continue to bring free education and sports projects across the world.
