Since last summer we have enjoyed the use of our new Edgar Hall workshop and facilities. Last August we officially opened our shed and welcomed many guests, including Damien Hinds MP who cut a chain with bolt cutters to mark our grand opening. We are grateful to the many local organisations and public bodies who have donated funds and awarded grants to us which we are putting towards the refurbishment of our workshop. We are currently installing a new floor and will soon be taking delivery of a circular saw and dust extractor. We have also been overwhelmed with the public’s generosity in donating surplus tools.
Over the last year the improved facilities at Edgar Hall have attracted new members as we approach around forty members in total. We continue to improve the layout of our workshop and now have six workspaces to accommodate members’ projects. We continue to attract many enquiries for practical help from local community groups, which reflects the raising of our public profile within Alton. Amongst the many projects we have undertaken are notice boards, furniture repairs, wheelchair ramps, planters and raised beds, as well as many odd jobs for disadvantaged residents. At present we have quite a long job list to construct items for local schools and care homes. As before, we have run our child friendly woodwork activities, particularly with the youngsters at Alton Beavers. Our Christmas reindeer and snowmen were particularly popular.
Alton Men’s Shed is much more than a practical group and we have welcomed new members who have joined us particularly for the comradeship and social activities we provide. We continue to hold our well attended monthly coffee mornings and as we now get on top of the workshop practicalities we plan to run more social events. Visits to places of interest include Farnborough Air Services and Basingstoke’s Milestones museums and of course our annual barbeque and Christmas lunch. We have just taken delivery of a new gazebo which we will soon be taking out to various fetes and open days to promote our shed. Our members have also been busy making many craft items that we will be selling to raise funds.
It has been a busy and successful year for Alton Men’s Shed culminating in us signing a new long term lease with the town council. As we say farewell to Dementia Friendly Alton we welcome Alton Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Club who will join us in sharing Edgar Hall. With our shed now fully established and our future secured, we look forward to serving our local community.
