Vectis Archaeological Trust

Registration No: 1174499

Chairman’s Annual Report for 2021/22

Date: 31[st] March 2022.

The charity Vectis Archaeological Trust (VAT) was formed on the 4[th] September 2017, consisting of 5 Trustees, each with their own specialist knowledge of working with charitable organisations/history and archaeology.

In 2021, we sadly lost our Chairman Geoff Cadman. Geoff passed away on the 15[th] July. For many years, he had held the tiller of the Isle of Wight Archaeological Committee ( IWAC ) and its successor, the Vectis Archaeological Trust. Geoff was a founder member of IWAC, an independent committee formed in 1975 for the good management and protection of archaeological sites on the Isle of Wight.

David Reeves was nominated as his successor and elected to the Chair of VAT at a meeting of the Trustees.

The archives of IWAC and VAT were kept at Geoff’s house, and the loss of this facility meant that VAT needed a new base of operations. Fortunately, in September 2021 VAT was able to rent an office along with a separate building to be used as an archaeological store, at Landguard Manor, Shanklin. As an added bonus, Landguard Manor is the birthplace of Charles Roach Smith, a Victorian archaeologist and leading antiquary of his time.

Trustees have been actively promoting the aims of the charity, working closely with likeminded organisations on the Isle of Wight and further afield. The Trust holds a monthly coffee morning where Island heritage organisations are given an opportunity to showcase their organisations activities. The Trust is supporting the publication of several books and a number of archaeological reports covering the history and heritage of the Isle of Wight.

Trustees are continuing their involvement with the local MP and county councillors to raise the profile of the Islands Heritage/History. We have given appropriate advice to organisations and students involved with the Island’s history. Part of the 2021/22 year was affected by government regulations covering the Covid 19 pandemic; this meant that we were unable to hold a number of fundraising events; however, we received a £4000 grant from IWAC along with several smaller bucket donations.

Professor Tracy Borman agreed to become our Patron (Historical) in January of this year. Professor Borman is joint Chief Curator for Historic Royal Palaces, the charity that manages Hampton Court Palace, the Tower of London, Kensington Palace, Kew Palace, the Banqueting House, Whitehall and Hillsborough Castle. I would like to thank fellow Trustee Bob Pitts for his endeavours in facilitating this honour for VAT.

Trustees were please to invite Val Pitts our Librarian and Kevin Trott our Field Archaeologist to become none voting Associated Members of the VAT board.

Signed:

David Reeves: Chairman. Charity number 1174499. Landguard Manor, Landguard Manor Road, Shanklin, IOW, PO37 7JB.
