Vectis Archaeological Trust

Registration No: 1174499

Chairman’s Annual Report for 2020/21

Date: 31[st] March 2021

The charity Vectis Archaeological Trust (VAT) was formed on the 4[th] September 2017, consisting of 5 Trustees, each with their own specialist knowledge of working with charitable organisations/history and archaeology.

We are pleased to announce that two new trustees have joined the board, both have experience in working with the heritage sector on the Island/mainland.

Trustees have been actively promoting the aims of the charity, working closely with likeminded organisations on the Isle of Wight and further afield. Trustees have given talks to organisations on the Island.

The trust is supporting the publication of several books and a number of archaeological reports covering the history and heritage of the Isle of Wight.

The trust has made a number of financial grants to archaeological organisations on the Island. Brading Roman Villa being one in particular, owing to the crisis caused by the Corona 19 pandemic the Villa museum had to close its doors. VAT was able to make a grant towards erecting a safety fence around the Hypocaust room in the North range of the Villa.

VAT has been co-operating with the trustees at Northwood House in Cowes, in particular organising a Geophysical survey of the lawns around Northwood House. VAT now has a new website covering all periods of Isle of Wight history.

Trustees are continuing their involvement with the local MP and county councillors to raise the profile of the Islands Heritage/History. We have given appropriate advice to organisations and students involved with the Islands history and have an ongoing relationship with the Isle of Wight Archaeological Committee (IWAC).

Owing to government regulations covering the Covid 19 pandemic it has not been possible to hold face to face board meetings. The day-to-day business of the charity has had to be conducted by email and phone.

Looking forward to 2021/22

In 2021 we are expecting to receive further grants totalling £4000. This will enable us to finance projects in VATs name and to continue the grants scheme as set out in our aims and objectives. If covid regulations allow it is our intention to undertake a number of small exploratory archaeological excavations on the Island.

NOTE: owing to the current crisis caused by the Covid 19 pandemic all fundraising activities have had to be cancelled until further notice.

Signed:

Chairman. Mr Geoff Cadman.
