Review of activities and achievements

CLF International Welfare | CLF Youth Development | CLF In The Community

CLF International Welfare

Food Aid and Welfare projects have been operating internationally since 2006, assisting in the provision of food to the disadvantaged and less fortunate in Pakistan, Palestine, Lebanon, Africa, Yemen & other regions in dire need of urgent help. Over time, this work has expanded to include Food Aid programs across the annual calendar.

Every initiative, from gathering in-kind donations to distributing desperately needed goods, is carried out voluntarily. There are already several separate programs that assist widows, orphaned children, and low-income families who are having difficulty meeting their necessities.

These include:

Ramadan Food Aid

Food Aid is given to families that are having difficulty meeting their basic needs each year throughout the month of Ramadan, in conjunction with local celebrations and special events. Volunteers buy food in bulk and package it for distribution just before the start of the fasting month. Lentils, vegetables, flour, rice, cooking oil, sugar, and other necessities needed for a medium-sized family to survive the entire month of Ramadan are included in Ramadan Food Aid Packs. Families that are worried about where their next meal is coming from should rest easy knowing this. This alleviates the worry and concern of families anxious of where their next meal is coming from. As part of this initiative, former Food Aid beneficiaries who have seen improvements in their social and financial circumstances volunteer to better the lives of others in their community and to continue to express gratitude for the support received by Community Lighthouse Foundation.

Communal Breaking Bread/ Weekly Open Home Program - ‘Breaking Bread Together’:

This program, hosted at Rumi House weekly seeks to bring together and build long term relationships within the community. The aim is to‘ Break Bread’ Together by sharing a meal with each other and fostering a sense of community and familiarity. Weekly meals are rotated throughout the group thus ensuring that every participant receives an opportunity to participate.

Eid Gift Aid / Qurbani Food Aid

During the celebratory festival of Eid ul Fitr gift parcels are distributed to orphaned children, widows and the poor. These Eid Gift Aid parcels contain food, clothes and treats for families during the celebratory period. Community Lighthouse Foundation aims to alleviate the distress and dismay of those that are without family and are especially neglected during these communal events. In celebration of the completion of the Hajj ritual, those that are eligible to, make sacrifices and distribute this amongst family and relations. It is often during these moments that widows and orphans feel the absence of parents or breadwinners within the home. Community Lighthouse Foundation provides Qurbani Food Aid for families during this period catering for their needs during this festive celebration. Communal sacrifices are made and along with staple foods and gifts, meat is distributed to the needy to suffice for a full family.

Uganda Shoe Distribution For Orphans & Medical Treatment;

Not wearing shoes leaves children and adults in various parts of Africa—including Uganda —vulnerable to some debilitating diseases and infections. Although many people look primarily for performance, style, and comfort in our shoes, our footwear also serves important protective purposes. CLF charity have provided new shoes for hundreds of orphan children in parts of Africa and medical treatment for those suffering with Spina Biffida.

Palestine Baby Milk Distribution & Hot Meal Distribution:

Since the conflict in Gaza, hundreds of thousands of people have been displaced into camps and shelters. Food insecurity has meant that essentials have not been available. Our volunteers have been working on the ground to supply essential items such as hot meals, baby milk & bread.

Palestine Clean Water Distribution:

It is reported that around 70% of the population in Gaza are drinking contaminated water leading to disease and illness. CLF worked to provide access to safe and clean drinking water to the displaced to make it easier for those who are having to travel many miles daily to collect this.

Lebanon Hot Meal Distribution:

The most recent explosions in Beirut, which has left thousands of people homeless and in need of aid, has made Lebanon's already dire situation worse as they are having to depend on volunteers and donations to cook and distribute meals to those in need. Our hot meal distribution is critical for giving people who might not have access to regular meals the nourishment they need by alleviating the strain on families that are suffering during these times.

Palestine Clean Water Distribution:

Throughout the year Community Lighthouse Foundation provides water pumps for families & villages struggling with basic amenities. These are installed within the locality, to provide clean and fresh drinking water to families that previously had to make lengthy, daily journeys to provide for their families. This is a special project that is particularly utilised by kind donors to provide water pumps in the memory of loved and dear ones. These water pumps are truly a lifeline for families on the edge of poverty and serve as a means to bring local families together to share resources provided by Community Lighthouse Foundation.

Storm Damage Roof & Extension Complettion in Pallisa, Uganda:

CLF is proud to have established a Community Training & Education Centre, a facility aimed at targeting the roots of poverty through acquisition of skills and educational achievement. We have already started to deliver sewing classes alongside open sessions for local women to begin to develop the Centre into a space, catering for the needs of the local people in need. We hope to continue with these classes and increase the facilities to transform the lives of those reliant on aid.

CLF Youth Development

Mentoring Program:

Those participants or recipients of the Youth Open Counselling, or those who have taken advantage of the many other programs, voluntarily provide ongoing mentoring to the youth, giving them role models and a friend to support them through their development. They also receive training including in listening skills, Safeguarding and First Aid.

Workshops:

Confidence and skills workshops are provided to help young people with self-development, self-image and staying away from negative influences. These workshops include sessions on speaking skills, job interview techniques, career trajectories but also they seek to equip young participants with the skills and knowledge in countering radicalisation, the influence of drugs and the enticement of crime.

Group Activities:

Team building activities with mentors and volunteers include informal outings to the local cinema, community events and social occasions. This seeks to build a sense of community and develop social skills in a less formal environment and utilising different social interactions and scenarios, providing confidence and self-assurance to those often from troubled and neglected backgrounds.

Community Sports Hall:

In continuing the excellent youth engagement and sports related activities, CLF has acquired an ex-furniture store premises and converted the upper floor into a multi-sport facility including Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Budo and Archery. This new premises, named Rumi House and based on the outskirts of Nelson town centre, has created a stable base from which the charity activities flourish. Martial Arts are proven to mitigate anger issues and behavioral problems and these sports are used to give young people the opportunity to experience and develop themselves using sports they would normally not engage with due to accessibility, affordability or social restrictions such as transport, negative peer pressure and other influences. Due to the pandemic & social distancing restrictions, it has been even more important when restrictions were lifted that people were able to come together.

CLF In The Community

Community engagement is vital to the work that Community Lighthouse Foundation undertakes. Interacting with families, young people, people of different faiths and none, community organisations and others is the sign of a healthy and vibrant community.

Community Lighthouse Foundation seeks to provide an environment for this to take place and encourages active participation from all sectors of the community.

It is with this ethos that the acquisition of an ex-furniture store premises and converting the upper floor into a multi-use facility has created a space in which families and young people can access the programmes delivered by CLF.

Projects that are delivered with this aim in mind vary and include:

Community Organisation Network:

CLF has built on its existing links in the community and received support for its ongoing projects from various organisation including:

Weekly Meditation:

As a result of lockdown & social distancing restrictions, we were able to continue our weekly sessions by broadcasting online. Proven to help alleviate anxiety and depression, mediation is hosted for families to come together and participate in meditation in a relaxing environment. A communal meal is served to all attendees and a friendly welcoming atmosphere is fostered to encourage involvement.

Drum Therapy:

Using musical instruments particularly Drums, a space is provided for exploration of creativity and skills. Accompanied with sacred songs, Drum Therapy seeks to provide an environment in which young and old can express themselves in a positive and constructive manner.

Homeless Support/ Cost of Living Crisis:

Community Lighthouse Foundation has provided support for those seeking shelter and a roof over their head during the pandemic, working closely with the local homeless support shelters & those sleeping rough In the streets.

Interfaith Dialogue:
