## **Chair’s report**

April 2021 – April 2022

## Chair’s report

I would like to start by thanking everyone for their continued hard work, resourcefulness and resilience ove the year which has seen very difficult times for families across Birmingham and Solihull.

Our postnatal activities through 2021 we conclusive of continuing the parent Walk and Talk in Edgbaston and Stechford. This Walk and talk was complete in September 2021. As we reassessed our plan moving forward whilst Covid-19 was still around we decided that in January 2022 we would begin our swimming lessons for parents and their baby the first half term was a success with 2 full classes. Unfortunately from February 2022 the uptake declined and this meant that we had to close our swimming classes. During this period we began to work on a The National Lottery Community Fund and we were successful for £9600 to deliver services in 2022-2023, this was happy news all round to end the year.

I would like to take the opportunity to give thanks to:

- Our funders, without your continued support we would not have been able to deliver our sessions.

- Service users, without you we wouldn’t be the charity that we are. You are the reason why we are still here and still actively present in our communities.

- Referrers, for recognising the services we provide and making the referrals that have seen our sessions well attended. It has been a privilege to work with you.

- Finally, to all of the Volunteers who continue to provide time, commitment and passion to Positive Birthing and Beyond. The charity could not be where it is today and have the positive impact it does without you.

## **CHARITY SERVICE DETAILS**

This year we have decided to share a case study from one of the parents who attended the Walk and Talk.

Case study from Edgbaston walk & talk:

MP joined our Edgbaston walks with her 3 year old son K. They had recently moved to Birmingham from London and didn’t know anyone in the area. It transpired that they were living in a women’s shelter and at that time there were still many pandemic restrictions, therefore it was very difficult to meet people within the shelter as mixing “bubbles” was not allowed, and a lot of groups inside were still limited on when they were running. Not being able to mix with other families was difficult as I had moved to keep myself and my son safe. There was on occasion where I felt I had no one to talk to that I messaged the session leader and she was so kind and friendly, I was grateful for her listening ear.

The walks proved to be a real lifeline for us over the 7 months we attended. Over time as trust was built up with the walk session leader, I opened up about why we were in the shelter. I had escaped a violent, controlling partner and were in the courts system fighting for custody of my child. The walks offered structure, peace and security in a turbulent time of our lives. Having a small group also made it easier for me to confide in the session leader. The walks offering opportunities like looking at the wildlife and feeding the birds was a lovely part of the experience for us both. It was a desperate time for my family and Positive Birthing and Beyond were able to support us at a time when we really needed it.

Thank you so much for your kind support.

## **Governing document**

Positive Birthing and Beyond CIO is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) registered with the Charity Commission on 30 August 2017.

It is governed by a board of trustees. All new trustees are given, in the view of the trustees, sufficient training and have enough knowledge to control the charity's governance, strategy and operations effectively. Trustees are recruited, on the basis of having a broad range of knowledge and experience across the board of trustees.

## **Appointment of Trustees**

In accordance with the terms of the constitution there must be at least three charity trustees. If the number falls below this minimum, the remaining trustees may only act to call a meeting of the charity trustees, or appoint a new charity trustee. Apart from the first charity trustees, every trustee must be appointed for a term of three years by a resolution passed at a properly convened meeting of the charity trustees.

Any member of the public wishing to become a Trustee must provide an expression of interest in the event of a vacancy. The prospective applicant will then be given an opportunity to observe a board meeting which can then be followed by an application. Upon successful appointment the applicant will be DBS checked where appropriate and will be skills based audited. Upon conclusion of the process and satisfactory results, the applicant will be formally invited to join the board.

## **Reserves policy**

The trustees do not currently have a reserves policy as the charity does not employ staff or acquire any liabilities. At an appropriate time the trustees are likely to adopt a policy of at least three months running costs.

## **Going concern**

The financial statements have been prepared on a going concern basis as the trustees believe that no material uncertainties exist. The trustees have considered the level of funds held and the expected level of income and expenditure for 12 months from authorising these financial statements.

## **FUTURE PLANS**

We as an organisation aim to continue supporting local women/people and their families in Birmingham and Solihull.

Positive Birthing and Beyond wants equality for all birthing women/people, we want all women/people to feel that they all have access to holistic maternity services irrespective of location and finance. Promoting informed choice so women/people and their families can experience positive birth experiences.
