the coronavirus pandemic and resulting restrictions
greatly curtailed the activities of the club. Moreover,
the restrictions meant that others were not as active
and the requests for support, both financial and
otherwise, fell significantly.
Nevertheless, Derwent lions are committed to serve.
These are some of the activities/services that our club
and our members have undertaken during the year:
Advancement of Citizenship. We believe strong,
inclusive village community groups are vital in our rural
area and we have forged strong links with parish
councils and youth and community groups so we can
aid them in their ambitions. For instance, when it was
permissible to do so, we operated a coconut shy at
village fetes for their benefit. We also are committed
to supporting young people to develop their skills,
capacities and capabilities to enable them to
participate in society as mature and responsible
individuals. To this end we have made a donation to a
girl’s football club for the purchase of a new team strip.
All our members are volunteers in that we make
donations to Lions Clubs International to cover our
administration costs. We believe every penny we raise
should count towards fulfilling our objectives.
Promoting volunteering is essential to our well-being| Page | 1 |||and to achieve the maximum public benefit. We
encourage our community groups to volunteer with us
so that we can achieve more. While the local
marathon was cancelled such that we did not have the
opportunity to volunteer at a water station, we
managed our Christmas Santa campaign, albeit not
going door to door but visiting local schools and care
homes while maintaining social distancing. Again, a
number of volunteers supported us with this major
undertaking.
We make annual donations through our District to our
International Foundation which responds rapidly to
environmental and other crises all over the world. The
explosion and resulting damage in Beirut, Lebanon is
an example in this period.
We provided financial support to many organisations
serving the less fortunate. For much of the year we
made regular financial donations to two local
foodbanks and also delivered surplus food from a local
allotment site. We made donations to other people in
need including support to a local charities, including
one for children affected by cancer charity
Candlelighters and a Care and Drop in Centre. We
organised a Xmas party for the elderly and arranged
coaches to bring people in from Care and Sheltered
homes at our cost.
The advancement of health or the saving of lives. We
provided funds for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance and
continued to supply Message in the Bottles free of
charge to elderly people so their health needs would
be available to emergency services if they collapse at
home.
Promoting the conservation protection and
improvement of the physical and natural environment.
Working closely with the charity 'Just Helping' (Charity
number: 1149068), we organised the collection and
recycling of Christmas trees for the benefit of our
community. With the support of a great many
volunteers, a record number of trees were collected
and recycled. 'Just Helping' collected a record amount
in donations from our area which went to the local
hospice.
Promoting community participation in healthy
recreation. We funded junior awards for a local cricket
club to promote participation. Together with another
Lions club, we jointly funded the purchase of a
specialised trike for a disabled child. A specialised
wheel chair was bought for a disabled person to

contact which was not allowed for much of the period
of this report. The restrictions during the pandemic led
to the club finding new ways to serve our communities.
Our activities highlighted above against our
constitution have made a substantial difference to the
lives of many people less fortunate and improved the
health and well-being and vitality of those living in the
villages we serve, in the wider community and through
supporting our Lions Foundation, to those less
fortunate in other countries. The selfless service
provided by our members has stimulated volunteers to
help with our activities and take more active roles in
improving society as a whole.
Our main achievements were:
• regular financial support to local foodbanks
• continuing to support our senior citizens in local care
homes
• taking our well known Rocking Rudolph sleigh to
schools and care homes, bringing much pleasure
during a time of restricted social contact
• through our fund-raising activities, often supported by
volunteers from our local communities, providing
grants to a range of local, national and Lions Club
