services. Zoom has been used for special services such as
baptisms, ftmernls. and martiages.
ILIIC is the perfect size for Toryn services and as a result
although a nom)al congregation could be 15 to 20 people if the
Tongans attend it could be doubled. If it is a special service, there
could be 80 ro 90 people including Tongan officials.
The highlight of the l'ear was the Queen's Platinum Jubilee
celebration in earl!. June. Church members and guests came out in
celebraton. narive dress. Young Tongans in native dress put on a
dancing exhibition. There was bve and recorded music which
carried all along King Street. 11]ere was a free BBQ with t2bles

Caring for members who are sheltering and not computer literate
has been a challenge.
Some older members th'd not want to do Zoom and the Tongans
started runni￿ their own services which are mainls, deh'vered in
their native tongue.
Next year when restricrions such as social disrancing are lifted and
tourists return, we will be able to have a more precise idea of likely
numbers in the future.
Ministetial OVers￿ht
Revd. Singa N'unipola completed her third year with us in ilugust
2022. We share her ministni with Shepherd's Bush Road Church.
Singa was h2PP!" to come to West LA)ndon as ir is a good location
for her calling to tnknister to the Tongan Fellowship in this
countn.. She does this in addition to her Circuit responsibilities.
.%he began her role in the Circuii in .lugust of 2019. Her
appoinmient should last five years. She will have reached
retirement age prior to the end of hei appointment. She could
then retire. If she chooses to stay on and the Circuit votes for her
to continue. she could opt-in for anotheI five years or less as she
will be eligible to retire.
ILNIC welcomed a new supeIintendenL Revd Faith Nyota, to the
Circuit on 28th _lugust 2022. This fills a massive hole for all the
churches in the Circuit.
Building
ILIIC is an impressive church (msured value £12,013,051 as of 06
June 2022) from both the inside and the outside. It opened in
1875. This mea￿$ FLIIC will cdebrate its 150, anniversary. in 2025.
ILIIC was converted in the late 1990s to provide flexibility in a
modern worslu'p space. The buildmg is both a curse and a blessing.
The blessing is that as a hgh street church, there are many people
passing b}, who express a genuine interest into what is going on
inside. ,Xlan!" people stop to pra}. Its location close to both bus
and tube services as well 2s a a'cle ]ane make it an easy place to

come in off the street are ven, impressed with the worship space.
With a large horel ver}, close we can see rourists on Sunday.
The curse of a large church with a small congregation is its
upkeep. Propem" management is a major cost of time and money
for the Trustees. In receni l.ears we have had exceptional costs for
the spire and the roof. Both projects have now been paid for.
,{ dark da!, for ]LIIC was 121b Jul): 2021. -Is we moved close to the
end of the previous financial l'ear and the end of the tenanf s lease,
both on 31., _lugust 2021, a torrential rain flooded the local sewer
s}'stem which caused sewage to back up through toilets into the
nurser)", which operares in the basement.
Luckdy. we were well insured. However NIethodisr Insurance only
released the basement back to ILIIC in
anua
, 2022..
Financial Accounts
2021-22 saw a small increase in receipts to £95,691. Palments 2150
had a small increase to £94,863. This resulted in a small surplus of
£1.098 wkn'ch is onl). a few pounds more than the preNryous year.
Voluntary giving which was down in the previous COIUD year
bounced up again. Dips should not be so grear in the future as
more people have turned to planned giving, which cuts the tie
between attendance and giving. -Is banks have become more
averse to accepting cash. planned ￿VIng must rise. However, it ￿ryll
be a long time until we can stop "passing the platc"
It is interesiing to see the income from next door shops and the
at broken down. This hasn't been done in preNryous reports. The
receiprs from the flat, managed b!, ILIIC, have risen in ]ine with
housing costs. ,IIonthl!' rent is collected b}, 2 realtor ncxt door to
ILIIC. The process almost runs itself.
However, the shops are managed b}, the IIethodist IA)ndon
Committee DILC) using a Central kn)ndon realtor. This has rne2nt
ILIIC is grossl!, undeq)aid for the two shops. The result means in a
decrease in income of almost 250/0 to the previous s'ear. One shop
has paid nothing, -Ir the end of this financial STear increased
pressure on the DILQ to manage the properties propetl) should
result in 2 large increase in receipts for 2023.
The nursen, in the basement entered a disasrrous period which
coincided with the sewage backup in Jul!. 2021. The work to
reinstate the basement didn't end until Jan 2022. In the autumn
the older children were told to find new schools. The younger
children had to move into ILIIC for classes. This was good for
ILNIC as most of the ILIIC Hall users had not
er returned as man '
Page5of7

of them induded older people who were shielding. Hall receipts
tripled to £26,734. The nurser), also helped pay for gas and
elecrticiti. during the winiet months. This is included in the £4292
labelled "tenants, conrribution towards costs" W1]en it was time
for the older children to rerurn to the nurser!, the! all deaded they
would rather sta!. where the!. were. This was a blow the nursery
couldn't withstand and the school had to close follovjing the final
end of tem) in Jul}. 2022 The nurse} ttied to sell their Furnishings
and finally moved out in ,lugust 2022,
This left ILIIC in a precarious posillon at the end of the financial
Vear as there was no income from the nurse4, or one of the shops.
The second shop is pa)ryng rent at a reduced rate.
Other income was down b}, the amount of the HNIRC Job
Retention Scheme which was halted.
ILNIC have a welcomed drop in Circuit 2ssessment next year of
one-third (£8,000) because of 2 Circuit manse being rettwned into
a rental properri..
K'e had a large increase in music costs of over three times to
£5,600 from £l.(AO. This isn't suq)rising as cost is direcdy linked
to the number of perforn)ances including Sunda}ys and other
ei'ents. Going back to 2019 the cost was £4,160 w]uch would be a
much smaller increase.
The General Fund is consisient with the previous year, £48,164
against £47,066. However. the CFB is our Church Reserve Fund.
It is down from £30.605 to £20,802. We received a large payment
of just under £IO,O(X) at the end of the financial year elevated
savingb in HSBC.
Next year will be crucial for LNIC. We should be able to collect
back rent for properties managed by the NILC. We need to find
tenant for the basemenr. W'e could have to pay business rates
starting on 8 November 2022 if we don't have a tenant bj. then.
If we c2n't find a tenant Eor some time and we don't receive
proper p2)Trents Irom the .IILC, ILIIC could get into financial
difficulries.
Reserves
Reserves are the amount of mone! held b). LIIC in case of
unforeseen circumstances. ILIIC aims to keep six months of
turnover in cash that is easdi. accessible. Our bank account
(Cenrral Board of Finance) took a hit as we strugEled withdrawing
mone! to cover costs. We were saved b!, insurance payments
which
veuss
hdi"
eater recei
ts than the
revious
'ear and
Page6of7

kept our reserves at nght around 50°/0.
The kel. to next l-ear is finding a tenant for the basement and
collecring the income from the propetties managed by NILC. If
this happens, we should be able to maintain a hcalthy reserve. If
we don't have rental income, we could need to borrow from the
Circuii. The onl!" mone!, we have spent has been for essenllal
repairs.
If we get the rent21 mone},. there is some pent-up pressure to
+pend mone!- on ILIIC to enhance the worship experience 2nd to
grow the congregation. Hopefull}. we will be able to follow this
path.
I Iuch of our work in the communiry is the Iesult of h2ving a space
that is extremd). usable. With 2 small congre￿tiOn the building
must break even.
Rivercourt received no special grants from Government or priv2te
intetests. Income was derived from public giving, lettings 2nd
users of ILIIC itself. No professional fundraisers were used. All
monies raised and spent were done so in England.
Other
-Ipart from the pandemic 2nd the sewage backup, no other serious
incidents occurred durin
the vear.
