## **CHAIRMAN’S REPORT**

## ” **Changing Lives with Adventure** “

Another year has gone by and in my personal opinion a successful year. We made new connections with Barnardo’s in Northern Ireland and had 2 young people join us from Belfast on the Camino later in the year.

We took young people to new places that we discovered during Covid like the South Downs. We took a group to Firle beacon and another group hiking along the Seven Sisters near Eastbourne.

We’ve completed indoor climbing sessions in line with our charity principles of keeping active. Hopefully, when I complete my indoor climbing wall instructor course, we could do more sessions. Another route we discovered was the North Downs Way near Guildford. In April we took a group of 6 to St Martha’s on the Hill, which is an old church on the North Downs Way. We were met by a local guide, Simon, who gave the young people a tour around the church and we we’re amazed that the founder of Bloomingdales the famous New York department store is buried in the grounds along with many other significant people from around the world.

In June we went on the Camino de Santiago for 3 weeks, taking 6 young people, 2 from London, 2 from Belfast,1 from Israel and 1 from the Navajo Nation in Arizona - a very different bunch of people, but it wasn't long until they all gelled together and became a team. These trips give us the opportunity to teach our charities values of team, discipline and respect. We walked 420 Km from Leon to Finisterre via the city of Santiago de Compostella. All l can say is that from their reports the young people really enjoyed it, and it made a significant positive in their lives.

We completed 2 more trips to Snowdonia to climb Mount Snowdon taking young people from London.

I feel we’ve had a full year, and we are now ready for 2023 and looking forward to ” **Changing Lives with Adventure** “.

## **REVIEW OF THE YEAR**

Our income for 2022 was around £23,900. Most of this income originated from individuals and grants from charities and churches in the United Kingdom. Total resources expended were about £22,000 resulting in a small surplus of around £2,000.

- Because of Covid restrictions, we had not been able to take young people hiking on the Camino Trail in Spain for 2 years. We are pleased to say that we were able to resume this activity in 2022 on two occasions.

- We took several young people on mentoring and training trips in the United Kingdom.

- We individually mentored some children/young people.

## **GRANTS FROM COMMUNITY FUND**

In 2021 we received a grant from the Community Fund of the National Lottery of £9915 to enable the charity to mentor young people by taking them to the National Parks of the United Kingdom. We continued this operation in 2022 on 9 different weekends.

Towards the end of 2021 we received a further £9165 from the Community Fund for a continuation of our training and mentoring trips in the United Kingdom. We took a number of young people to the Southwest Path in Cornwall but will spend most of this grant in 2023.

## **GRANT FROM MUTUAL GAIN**

We received a grant for £1980 specifically to mentor young people from Hounslow by taking them to Polsden Lacey, Wisley Gardens and Longleat.

## **GOING CONCERN**

The Trustees consider Young Star Mentoring as a going concern and are committed to the charity’s growth and development.

## **VOLUNTEER SUPPORT**

Young Star Mentoring has no employees and so is run entirely by volunteers:

- The chief executive gives his time freely to the charity.

- The trustees give their time in meetings, preparation of accounts and minutes of meetings.

- The charity makes use of mature and qualified volunteers who care for, and mentor, the young people on the Camino Trail and the training trips.

## **FUTURE STRATEGIC PLANS**

- Continue to take more young people on the Camino Trail in Spain once or twice a year.

- Organise training trips on National Parks in the United Kingdom.

- Mentor individual young people.

## **INVESTMENT POWERS**

The Constitution authorises the trustees to make and hold investments using the general funds of the charity, but no such investments are presently held.

## **REVIEW AND MANAGEMENT OF RISKS**

The Trustees conduct reviews of the major risks to which the charity is exposed. Where appropriate, systems or procedures have been established to mitigate the risks the charity faces.

## **RESERVES**

Usable reserves on the 31st of December 2022 are around £33,900 meaning that our programme for 2023 is assured.

## **BASIS OF ACCOUNTING**

The accounts have been prepared under the “Receipts and Payments” basis as prescribed by the Charity Commissioners, and they meet the appropriate legal requirements.

## **EXAMINATION OF ACCOUNTS**

As the charities income for the year was below the threshold when an independent examination is required, the trustees agreed that we would not present the accounts for independent examination. But as the treasurer produced the accounts it was decided that details of the accounts and receipts would be passed to one of the other trustees for informal checking.

## **RESPONSIBILITY OF THE TRUSTEES**

The trustees are responsible for preparing the trustees report and the financial statements in accordance with applicable law and United Kingdom accounting standards.

The Charities Act 2011 requires the trustees to prepare financial statements for each financial year. In preparing those financial statements the trustees are required to:

- Select suitable accounting policies and apply them consistently.

- Make reasonable and prudent judgements and estimates.

- Prepare the financial statement on a going concern basis unless it is inappropriate to presume that the charity will continue to operate.

The trustees are also responsible for:

- Keeping proper accounting records which disclose with reasonable accuracy the financial position of the charity and which enable them to ascertain the financial position of the charity and to ensure that the financial statements comply with applicable law and regulations.

- Safeguarding the charity’s assets.

- Taking reasonable steps for the prevention and detection of fraud.
