## **INDEPENDENT EXAMINER'S REPORT ON THE ACCOUNTS**
Report to the trustees/members of Young Star Mentoring on the accounts for the year ended 31st December 2021 set out on pages 5 to 9.
## **RESPECTIVE RESPONSIBILITIES OF TRUSTEES AND EXAMINER**
The charity's trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year (under section 144 (2) of the Charities Act 2011) and that an independent examination is needed.
It is my responsibility to:
- examine the accounts (under section 145 of the 2011 Act),
- to follow the procedures laid down in the General Directions given by the Charity Commission (under section 145(5)(b) of the 2011 Act), and
- to state whether particular matters have come to my attention.
## **BASIS OF INDEPENDENT EXAMINER'S STATEMENT**
My examination was carried out in accordance with General Directions given by the Charity Commissioners. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the organisation and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from the trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a 'true and fair view' and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below.
## **INDEPENDENT EXAMINER'S STATEMENT**
In the course of my examination, no matter has come to my attention
1. which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in, any material respect, the trustees have not met the requirements to ensure that:
- proper accounting records are kept (in accordance with section 130 of the Act); and
- accounts are prepared which agree with the accounting records and comply with the accounting requirements of the Act; or
2. to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.

## **OBJECTIVES AND ACHIEVEMENTS**
To help young people, especially but not exclusively through leisure time activities, to develop their capabilities that they may grow to full maturity as individuals and members of society.
## **ACTIVITES**
- Taking a number of young people hiking on the Camino de Santiago in Spain when possible.
- Training trips on national parks and mountains in the United Kingdom.
- Mentoring individual young people.
## **PUBLIC BENEFIT**
In determining our programmes, we must regard both the Charity Commission's general guidance on public benefit and prevention and relief of poverty for the public benefit. The trustees ensure that our programmes are in line with our charitable objects and aims.
## **STRUCTURE, GOVERNANCE AND MANAGEMENT**
The name of the charity is Young Star Mentoring. The charity is governed by the Constitution of a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) dated March 2017 and registered with the Charity Commission as charity number 1174301 on 17th August 2017.
New trustees are appointed by a resolution of the Trustees at a meeting of the Trustees at which there is a majority of the Trustees present. The Trustees meet formally at least twice a year.
The chief executive, Anthony Lemboye, works for the charity on a purely voluntary basis and is also a trustee.
## **CHAIRMAN'S REPORT**
2021 was again a good year for Young Star Mentoring as we managed to mentor vulnerable young people by taking them hiking to beautiful places in the UK despite the disruption of the COVID pandemic.
It was very challenging earlier on in the year with the restrictions, as we weren't allowed to travel far from our homes and the young people were asking us to take them walking, so we completed 3 hiking day trips walking the South Downs Way. I think a lot of people's mental health suffered during the pandemic not least the young people, so it was a case of picking them up in Greenwich, Southeast London and driving down to East Sussex to walk the South Downs just North of Brighton. The young people loved it, and I think they appreciated the ongoing commitment that 'young Star Mentoring was giving them during this unprecedented time.
In August as the restrictions were relaxed further, we took 11 young people to our Young Star Summer Camp in the Lake district in Cumbria for 5 days where we hiked up England's highest mountain, Scafell Pike. This was a very challenging 9- hour day, but the young people all made it to the summit and hence, I believe, had that feeling of personal satisfaction by completing something challenging. This, in turn, raised
their self-esteem and gave the group a feeling of togetherness and improved group cohesion.
In September and October, we completed 2 trips to Cornwall to hike along the famous Southwest Coastal Path. We based ourselves at Penzance near Lands' End and completed stretches of the path. I think the youngsters were all impressed with the beauty of Cornwall, so far away from their normal lives and from where they live.
I would like to personally thank the board of trustees and all the very generous donors who supported Young Star Mentoring in the past year and I feel excited about the plans we have in 2022.

## **ACHIEVEMENTS AND PERFORMANCE (CONTINUED)**
## **REVIEW OF THE YEAR**
Our income for 2021 was around £31,900. Most of this income originated from individuals and grants from charities and churches in the United Kingdom. Total resources expended were about £14,000 resulting in a surplus of £17,900 which was carried over to cover our extensive program in 2022.
- Because of Covid restrictions, we were still not able to take young people hiking on the Camino Trail in Spain. Our
- expectations are that we can resume this activity in 2022.
- We took several young people on mentoring and training trips in the United Kingdom.
- We individually mentored some children/young people.
## **GRANT FROM COMMUNITY FUND**
We received a grant from the Community Fund of the National Lottery. This grant of £9915 was given to enable the charity to mentor young people by taking them to the National Parks of the United Kingdom. In 2021 we took young people to Snowdonia, the Lake District and the South Downs National Parks and spent
- £3089 leaving £6826 for activities in 2022.
## **ONGOING CONCERN**
The Trustees consider Young Star Mentoring as a going concern and are committed to the charity's growth and development
## **VOLUNTEER SUPPORT**
Young Star Mentoring has no employees and so is run entirely by volunteers:
- The chief executive gives his time freely to the charity.
- The trustees give their time in meetings, preparation of accounts and minutes of meetings.
- The charity makes use of mature and qualified volunteers who care for, and mentor, the young people on the Camino
- Trail and the training trips.
## **FUTURE STRATEGIC PLANS**
- Continue to take more young people on the Camino Trail in Spain once or twice a year.
- Organise training trips on National Parks in the United Kingdom.
- Mentor individual young people.
## **INVESTMENT POWERS**
The Constitution authorises the trustees to make and hold investments using the general funds of the charity, but no such investments are presently held.
## **REVIEW AND MANAGEMENT OF RISKS**
The Trustees conduct reviews of the major risks to which the charity is exposed. Where appropriate, systems or procedures have been established to mitigate the risks the charity faces.
## **RESERVES**
Usable reserves on the 31st of December 2021 are around £31,900
## **TRUSTEES RESPONSIBILITIES**
- The Charities Act 2011 require the trustees to prepare financial statements for each financial year. In preparing those financial statements the trustees are required to:
- Select suitable accounting policies and apply them consistently;
- Make judgements and estimates that are reasonable and prudent;
- Prepare financial statements on the going concern basis unless it is inappropriate to presume that the trust will continue in existence.
The trustees are responsible for keeping proper accounting records, which disclose with reasonable accuracy at any time
the financial position of the trust. They are also responsible for safeguarding the assets of the trust and hence for taking reasonable steps for the prevention and detection of fraud and other irregularities.
