made to them. Procedures were set up to use secure communication
(Signal app), ensure anonymity and to provide guidelines for fellows to
ensure their security. Payments were made directly where possible or
through a known and trusted third party and verified with the receiving
fellow.
The directors held monthly meetings with the donor Firetree Philanthropy,
to share best practice and to ensure activities aligned with the terms of
the donation.
The directors also enhanced due diligence procedures in the second half
of 2023 to verify none of the fellows, the trusted third parties through
whose accounts the payments were made, and the trustees are on any
U.N., U.S. or EU sanctions list.|

||The advancement of education for the public benefit by establishing and
maintaining a bi- lingual website and digital archive of the social history
and cultural heritage of Myanmar/ Burma and promoting its content
through outreach activities including translations into ethnic minority
languages, exhibitions and partnerships with education providers in
Myanmar and internationally.
In 2023, The Kite Tales continued its support for storytellers from
Myanmar through what is internally referred to as “The Kite Tales Digital
Storytellers Fellowship”.
The aims behind this fellowship were two fold:
1.
To contribute to international understanding of Myanmar in the
wake of the 2021 military coup by chronicling the lives of
ordinary people living under the regime
2.
Supporting journalists and storytellers who lost their jobs,
sometimes overnight, as a result of the political upheaval
The Kite Tales received donations from a philanthropic foundation which
also donated to its cause in 2023. This, in addition to money raised from
the public through Go Fund Me, allowed us to continue supporting a
total of five journalists and illustrators to produce monthly diaries. In
doing so the trustees had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity
Commission on public benefit.
Fellows were again selected from across Myanmar to highlight a
diverse set of voices and cultural backgrounds, in line with our mission
statement. The selection process was made through trusted news
organisations and contacts in the country. Particular care was taken for
their security, including the use of secure communications.
The often harrowing accounts by reporters from different regions in
Myanmar documented the situation both for those who have chosen to
continue working in secret in the country, and for those forced to flee.|

The Kite Tales provided crucial, first-person accounts of what is
happening in Myanmar, particularly as global attention shifted away from
the country.
The co-founders also spoke at multiple events and discussions on
