Para 1.17and 1.19 |
The aim ofthe Ayre to Air CIO isto build, maintain and operate a Pitts S2AE aircraft that was bequeathed by the family ofthe late Sgt Anthony Ayre such that Service Personnel and qualifying civilians may be afforded an opportunity to experience aerobatic flight at |
| minimum personal cost. As a non-profit |
| making organisation, supported by volunteer members ofthe RAF Sport Aircraft Association (RAFSA), the |
| maintenance and operating costs are |
| kept to the very minimum, thus making the activity ofaerobatic flying accessible tothose who would |
| otherwise be unable to participate. |
| Aerobatic Flying is a physically and |
| mentally demanding activity that undoubtedly "stretches" the individual, |
| leading to significant personal and professional flying development. |
| Taking it one step further and entering an aerobatic competition brings with it the immeasurable benefits associated |
| with sporting activity and competition. In turn, these benefits further enhance |
| the individuals' contribution to the |
| efficiency ofthe defence ofthe UK. | ||||||

external 'friends ofthe project', proved invaluable as the aircraft was slowly |
| introduced to its operating environ. |
| During this reporting period„a number |
| of issues were identiTied, such as | |||||
| inadequate avionics in the forward |
| cockpit, making it difficult to monitor a |
| novice pilot's engine settings and |
| actions. The Trustees agreed that an |
| electronic engine management system |
| should be installed in both cockpits to |
| enhance flight safety and improve |
| operating efficiencies. The aircraft was |
| relocated to Nottingham aerodrome to |
| afford greater use given the availability | |||||
| oftwo runways. During this time, the |
| first beneficiaries ofthe aircraft were |
| afforded their initial introductions to |
| aerobatics. However, a frustrating |
|---|
| engine malfunction proved rather |
| limiting and a number ofhours or |
| operation were lost. Most ofthe |
| reporting period was spent trying to |
| identify what was causing the engine |
| issues, and very little flying achieved. |
| Sourcin and Raisin Finance: Funding |
| the installation ofan engine |
| management system was achieved |
| through a loan to the Charity by AAKOS |
| Ltd. The Charity was delighted to |
| receive a generous donation from the |
| Adrian Swire Charitable Trust and also a |
| grant from QinetiQ. 50%ofthe loan by |
| AAKOS was repaid within the reporting |

| through flying activities. |
