Sales of our two children’s books provided
much needed fundraising income and also
supports our programme of book readings
which promote good citizenship, identity and
social cohesion.
**BAME Maternity Online Academy project**
**initiated. Second Annual event delivered.**
**Volunteer on a monthly basis to support**
**delivery of Lewisham Hospital Early**
**Pregnancy Evenings. Entered into**
**collaboration with Royal College of**
**Midwives to highlight unsung heroes on**
**the maternity frontline**
Pursuant to our charitable objective to
relieve sickness and prevention of good
health through medical research into infant
and childhood illness, the charity continued
to deliver and expand its BAME Maternity
programme. This initiative highlights
maternity issues facing diverse communities
with programming led by Helen Knower,
Director of Midwifery, Lewisham and
Greenwich NHS Trust. It delivered a number
of well-received webinars. Work continued
on development of an online academy,
which has had to be re-started from scratch,
with an entirely new team, after the original
site was hacked and compromised. Late
payments relating to the second annual
online conference were recovered. Time on
a monthly basis is also given to support
delivery of monthly online early pregnancy
evenings. This work promotes shared
learning and best practice and reaches an
audience spanning midwifery, the wider
medical profession, Maternity Voice
Partnerships, policy makers, social workers,
charities and, crucially, a diverse range of
communities from within the Boroughs of
Lewisham and Bromley and far beyond. The
charity was invited by the Royal College of
Midwives to join the judging panel for two
Race Matters Unsung Hero Awards, which
honour and celebrate extraordinary
individuals from diverse and vulnerable
communities that work in the field of
maternal health. Candidates include – but
are not limited to – midwives, student
midwives, maternity support workers and
higher education institution staff. These
individuals often go above and beyond the
call of duty and deserve recognition for their
hard work and dedication. These awards
ultimately recognise exemplary service
delivery, education that promotes
collaborative and culturally sensitive working|
that results in higher standards of care for all service users throughout pregnancy, birth and the postnatal period. **Book readings/supporting literacy and creative writing in for school pupils in Lewisham** Continued book readings promoting good citizenship, identity and social cohesion. We were invited by a Lewisham based community centre to deliver a creative writing workshop for local school children **Grant making activities** Grants were made in support of Great Ormond Street Hospital. **Overseas and other Epic Adventure Fundraising Programmes developed** We announced our first overseas Epic Adventure to Albania and fielded strong interest. However, COVID and apprehension travelling post COVID meant that the trip had to be deferred. We also worked with a volunteer to develop an Epic Adventure to the west coast of Scotland and completed a dry run in preparation for launching. Other ideas continue to be incubated and there is optimism that as the world comes out of COVID they will come to fruition. **Resumption of Supper Clubs** Following a lengthy COVID-induced hiatus the period saw us hold a sold out vegetarian gourmet supper club in partnership with a former Great British Bakeoff winner. **Annual Golf Day launched** In anticipation of a post-COVID world – and the fact golf is one of the few COVID friendly activities – the charity launched an annual golf day to take place June 2023. Advanced sales during the reporting period were steady and augur well for the event.

We are proud of our continued response to
the COVID pandemic and that we not only
sustained in the face of unprecedented
COVID challenges but sought to extend our
reach, notably through the partnership with
the Royal College of Midwives and our
continued participation in communal
activities such as Lewisham Hospital’s
Online Early Pregnancy Evenings as well
as deliver of a creative writing workshop for
young people in Lewisham. We continued
to innovate, prime example being the work
on the online academy and epic
adventures.
We are proud to have been able to offer
volunteering opportunities with the
Foundation. The volunteers made
outstanding contributions and have given
favourable reviews of their experience,
including citing it as invaluable in taking
their next professional step.
We have shown tremendous resilience
against the backdrop of severely impacted
annual revenues. Uptake of the March
Supper Club as well as pre-sales for the
newly launched Annual Golf Day augur
well for the future.|

impacted by COVID which compromised
our ability to organise and participate in
live events, including community and
cultural events and epic adventures. Live
events have been a major fundraising
source. Offsetting this has been our
continued work to develop online offerings,
collaboration with the Royal College of
Midwives and sales of our books and
determination to continue to innovate
when it comes to fundraising initiatives
and charitable giving in line with our
objects. As a charity we are not reliant on
any one big event and have diversified
streams of income. Uptake of the March
Supper Club and pre-sales in support of
the June 2023 Annual Golf Day augur well
for the future.|
