Section C Objectives and activities

The objectives of the society are to:

Summary of the objects of the charity set out in its governing document

  1. To promote research into the processes, causes and effects of ageing and, as indicated, into means for counteracting these, both in human beings and in other organisms;

  2. To publish the results of all such useful research;

  3. To further public education therein.

In accordance with the constitution of the society, the charity undertook the following activities between the 1[st] Dec. 2019 and the 30[th] Nov. 2020.

Promotion of research was undertaken by the continued funding of a PhD studentship (valued at up to £69,750 over three years). The student started their project in October 2016. In addition, the BSRA have also started to offer small grant opportunities, and in late 2020 we provided £104 to support the publication of a paper related to the biology of ageing. We hope to provide more funding in this arena in the coming years.

Summary of the main activities undertaken for the public benefit in relation to these objects (include within this section the statutory declaration that trustees have had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit)

Diffusion of information on ageing research via: the charity website www.bsra.org and links with the society of biology.

Promotion of the awareness of ageing research via engagement with the public bodies and other charities. The BSRA was invited to provide input to the House of Lords Science and Technology Select Committee report on ageing science.

In 2020 the BSRA annual scientific meeting which promotes and disseminates scientific research on ageing was due to be held at Aston University, however due to the Covid-19 pandemic this was cancelled. BSRA was therefore also unable to award travel bursaries and prizes to award winners at the meeting, which are used to promote the Society and UK based ageing research in the USA via the annual award of a bursary to fund attendance of an early career research at the American Aging Association meeting.

New trustees are expected to read the guidance on public benefit issued by the charity commission, on appointment.

When awarding grants the BSRA conforms to the AMRC principles of peer review guidelines, and utilises a minimum of 2 peer reviewers (for awards exceeding £2000) and an independent Scientific Advisory Board for selecting projects for funding. The BSRA is also committed to the 3Rs relating to the use of animals in research.

You may choose to include further statements, where relevant, about:

In addition to the scientific advisory board, the BSRA also has a development board comprised of volunteers, who are concerned with supporting our fundraising efforts through networking and trust fund applications.

Section D Achievements and performance

Promotion of research was undertaken by the continuance of a Summary of the main PhD studentship (valued at up to £69,750 over three years). The achievements of the charity during the year student started their project at the University of Liverpool in October 2016 under the guidance of Prof A McArdle and Dr A Vassilaki.

The BSRA also launched its small grants awards, designated for early career researchers seeking funding for laboratory consumables, funds to help publish their work or funding to disseminate and promote the biology of ageing.

The Annual Scientific Meeting was organised and due to be hosted with the biochemical Society for the 2[nd] year, however it was cancelled due to Covid-19.

The BSRA continued to work mutually with the Springer Biogerontology Scientific Journal by guest editing a special issue based around the BSRA 2019 Annual Scientific meeting.

Section E Financial review

At the end of the 2020 financial year the charity account balance was Brief statement of the >£82,000, which is more than sufficient to cover its outstanding charity’s policy on reserves payments. Indeed, 2020 saw the final payment of ~£20,000 in support of a PhD studentship, was the BSRAs most significant outgoing in 2020. The considerable remaining funds are adequate to account for any fluctuations in outgoings in 2021. BSRA is focused on providing smaller grants in the coming years, and aims to increase its membership and fundraising to support future larger grants.
