CHAIRPERSON'S STATEMENT
The year 2020 to 2021 will be perceived by many in history as one of the most difficult, strange and unsettlingly periods of modern times for many different reasons attributed to the Covid 19 virus. Whilst many people were dealing with the fallout of the virus personally, organisations such as ourselves were fighting hard to continue to provide a service for vulnerable care experienced young people and carers without trying to let the standard drop and the staff rose to the challenge every day. We were able to maintain the 1:1 support for young people either online or in socially distance settings - providing vital support for those who were scared and isolated. We ensured there were opportunities to participate in activities online such as cooking, arts and crafts and writing and recording music.
The CARE project continued to keep young people safe and took the opportunity to make them aware of online dangers in a world that suddenly went online as lockdown progressed. This was extremely difficult for the team and the young people, however they persevered. Young people moved into our semi- independent apartments in a time that was chaotic and unprecedented, the team were phenomenal in their ability to offer stability, comfort and understanding. The carers were incredible in their support of one another and continued to meet online and in socially distanced environments and whilst it felt the world was falling apart, it was evident that people were coming together and that was beautiful to see. During 2020-21, We also celebrated our Queens Award for Voluntary Services and our Outstanding Charity award from the wonderful Child in Wales Team, however sadly we also said goodbye to a wonderful carer, Delyth who we lost to cancer and who we miss dearly. She was a phenomenal human being who offered so much for nothing in return. Thank you Delyth, it was an honour knowing you.

THE CARE PROJECT

The CARE Project which is funded by Children in Need is a specific
project that works with care experienced young people who are the
victims or at risk of becoming the victims of exploitation. This project
has been extremely successful in providing awareness, reduce risk
taking behaviour and our project offered high level intervention and
support to young people and their carers.
The pandemic hit our support services considerably hard - we were
unable to meet with young people face to face initially and a
considerable amount of our work was conducted online in a safe way
and in a socially distanced environment using all of the covid safety
recommendations. The staff however were extremely determined in
ensuring that young people were still able to access our project and
that there would not be any barriers to participation and spent time
delivering activity packs to our young people.
It was evident that during this difficult period, staff and volunteers
went out of their way to truly support young people access support.

KISS PROJECT
The KISS Project, which is funded by the national lottery community fund, is a project which specifically supports Kinship and SGO carers. Throughout the lockdowns our KISS project worker mainined regular contact with carers through phonecalls and online sessions providing practical and emotional support....
Weekly coffee morning commenced once restrictions were eased and we were able to meet again.
Kinship and SGO carers were visited by the High Sheriff during coffee morning who came to talk to them which they thoroughly appreciated
SEMI-INDEPENDENT LIVING ACCOMMODATION
Welcomed 5 young people into the Roots family, providing accommodation to young people on the cusp of leaving the care system, providing a safe, nurturing and loving home whilst teaching the skills needed to live independently. Independent living skills including: Cooking workshops
Art therapy, practical and emotional support
Supported young person into employment
OUR OTHER ACTIVITIES...
Here at The Roots Foundation Wales, we were acutely aware the affect Covid was having on young people, especially those who were care experienced and who had suffered trauma. The lockdown had a detrimental and additional traumatic affect on young people. Young people felt lonely and isolated and were certainly at risk from online harm as a result. The team took the initiative and opportunity to use the tools and experience they had to support the young people, using platforms such as google meet, business WhatsApp, zoom to engage with them on a regular basis and extraordinary things happened as a result. They created music with Angharad Jenkins, information videos, Inspirational posters, the most amazing recipes and art projects. For those most vulnerable, the team met the young people in a safe and socially distanced manner and engaed with their carers to offer support.
This year we also celebrated our 10th birthday. We were inbetween restrictions and limitations, however we were safe enough to meet in the park for pizza. It felt appropriate to mark the occasion in a small and unique way and we were delighted that the sun shone and that a number of young people, volunteers and supporters were able to join us.
10 years of establishment felt quite an achievement, and during those ten years the most amazing and beautiful things have happened to our charity, things you could never dream of, things we are so extremely grateful for. We would like to take this opportunity and each and everyone of you who were part of that journey. With providing the activities and opportunities we have been able to do with the support of funders, we have created the most amazing memories and kept children safe.

Independent Examiners Report on the Accounts
I report to the trustees on my examination of the accounts of the above charity for the year ended 31st August 2021.
As the charity's trustees, you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011.
I report in respect of my examination of the accounts carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act and in carrying out my examination I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5) (b) of the Act.
I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination which gives me cause to believe that in any material repsect:-

the accounting records were not kept in accordance with section 130 of the Charities Act, or
-
the accounts did not accord with accounting records, or
-
the accounts did not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and content of accounts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 other than any requirement that the accounts give a 'true and fair' view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination.
I have no concerns and have come across no matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.

Independent Examiners Report on the Accounts
I report to the trustees on my examination of the accounts of the above charity for the year ended 31st August 2021.
As the charity's trustees, you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011.
