REPORT OF THE TRUSTEES
FOR THE YEAR EIYDED 31 MARCH 2024
The trustees who are also directors of the charity for the purpos¢s of the Companies Act 2006, present their report with
the financial staternents of the chaTity foT the year ¢nd¢d 31 March 2024. The trnstees have adopted the provisions of
Accounting and Reporting by Charities.. Statement of R¢commmd¢d Practice applicable to charities Preparing their
accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of treland {FRS 102)
{eff¢ctiv¢ l January 2019).
THE VISION
Th¢ Vision is to re-establish rhe Column, Cottage and ¢nvirons as 'The Face of Anglesey, with a sustainable future as a
lust visit, destination for the local community and visitors to Anglesey.
MISSION STATEMEIYT
In 2014 the Column was closed, due to the departure of the last tenants of the Colurnn CottAge who had krted as
gatekeepers and supcrviscd visitor access to the Column. In 2016, a structural survcy commissioned by the Column
revealed that the central internal staircase. which gives access to the top of the Column, was unsaf¢ and dangerous.
The Current Mission of the Trnst is, therefore. to restore the Column and develop the whole site for public benefit
consistent with the Trust Obj¢¢tiv¢s and Vision. It is proposed that thosc who cannot access the Column stairs should
have access to the historic plaques at the ba￿ of th¢ Column and to a viewing platforn) with spectacular vi¢ws across
the Mcnai Strait and of Snowdonia.
OBJECTIVES AND ACTivrriES
Objectlves and aims
The Objects of th¢ Trust as specified in the memorandu￿ of Association are. but not limit¢d to:
a) the advancement of the education of the public by making ac¢¢ssible to the public, and
b) the pr¢s¢rvation, maintenance, upkeep and repair of the Napolconic War Memorial, known as the Marquess of
Anglesey's Column, on the 151e of Anglesey.
Public benefit
The project development stage is an csscntial part of moving from concept to final design and securing monies that will
facilitate completion of the project and the re-opening of tbe whole Column estste thereby delivering th¢ public b¢n¢fits
outlined in the Mission.
The Trustees confirm that they have T¢f¢rr¢d to the guidance contained in th¢ Charity Commission general gutdanc¢ on
public benefits when r¢vi¢wing the charity's aims attd objectives and planning futur¢ activiti¢s.
The Trust¢¢s commissioned a report from Headland Design Associates, who have long established working
relatjOn5hips with conservation architects, business planners. tourism and other specialist practitioners. The Headland
Report has become a touch5tODe document for th¢ Trust as li details proposals for activities, volunteering and training
as wcll as a set of activity action plans that facilitate. amongst other things, community engagcrnenL formal learning
opportunities and 51te visits to enhancc cducation about the history and heritage linked to the Marquess of Ang]esey's
Column. The activity action plans ar¢ complemented by interpretation panels in the Visitor Centre and around the site
that facilitatc a high quality educational experience for all visitors to thc Column Site.
Volunteers
The Trustc¢s and Directors of the charity are all volunteKrs. Th¢ ¢harity relies on the support of the TnTStees for the
strategic direction of the charity and its objectivcs.

ACHIEVEMENT AND PERFORMANCE
Charltable aclfivities
During the 2023124 financial year the Trustee's focus was finnly on moving the restoration project from the
development stage to the delivery and completion stage. Making that transition r¢quir¢d a great deal of planning, effort
to assess the impact of the rising c05t of building materials and, importantly, ¢nsuring that grant ￿nd]llg alld donations
provided the required budget. A comprehensive set of requirements was produced for Grosv¢nor ConstructlOD Lid. who
had b¢¢n selected by competitive tender to deliver the restoration programrne through a d¢sign and build contracl. After
ssurance of tbe budget th¢ building Testoration programme commenced on the 12th December 2022.
The restoration programm¢ progr¢ss¢d extremely well giving the Trustee's confidence that the Column and Visitor
Centre works would be ¢ompl¢t¢ at the b¢ginning of October 2023. However, whilst the PToject compleled within
budget, the conwletion ¢ertificat¢ was not signed until th¢ l Oth January 2024 due a small number of almost intractabl¢
problems that had to be over¢om¢. The R¢ctifi¢ation Period will end on the 10th January 2025.
A Column Manager was appointed along with an Education Officer and a Community Engag¢m¢nt Officer. Volunteers
were also recruited and a series of small low-key events at the Column Site were h¢ld to t¢st the effectiveness of the
equipment, the IT systems and the business pn>cesses as well as familiarise the volunt¢¢rs with roles in th¢ Café and
overseeing people climbing the 115 steps of the Column. The low key events lead to th¢ soft op¢ning of the Anglesey
Column Sit¢ on the 1st March 2024 enabling visitors to have refreshments in the Visitor Centre Café. climb th¢
Column. l¢arn about the blue schist rock fortnations and walk through the attractive woodlands surroundAng the Column
Sit¢. Th¢ Trust now employs seven members of staff and has a list of over 20 volunteers.
FINANCIAL REVIEW
Finaneial position
During the year restricted funds decreased from £160.455 in March 2023 to £14,319 as at March 2024. The unrestricted
reserves have increased from £22,892 to £46,625 in the sam¢ p¢riod.During th¢ y¢ar both restricted and unrestricted
funds have been used towards the development phase of the column T¢Storation.
Prlnelpal fundlng sourees
Tbe principal fimditig source durinE this financial year has been by way of donations and grant funding.
Continuation of funding
In 2023124 the initial source of income was from NLHF Delivery Stage ￿ant funding, mat¢h funding and private
donation to complete the restoration programme. The opening of the Column Site on the I st March 2024 started incom¢
generation to maintsin and invest in the Column Site. The series of low-key events after completion of the restoration
work5 in January 2024 generat￿ a mod¢st income str¢am and gave encouragement for the fuNre.
During 2023124 the NLHF agreed additional grant funding to continue th¢ d¢v¢lopm¢nt and overall attractiveness of the
Column Site by improving the lower car parK installing 5KUTity f¢ncing> instslling a lightning conductor An the
Column. generally improving the landscaping, developing a woodland manag¢m¢nt plan and installing a lead canopy at
the top of the Colunm to prevent water ingress. This fLmding, and other approved NLHF funding> will Continue into
2024125.
Investment policy and objeetives
The Trustees intend to review and revis¢ inv¢slm¢nt policy and obj¢ctives in March 2025 when the picture of the f115t
year of trading is complete. In the interim funds received and not r¢quir¢d for current expenditure will continue to be
deposited in a current bank account.
Reserve$ policy and golng concern
The Twstees will meet policy objectives whereby the unrestricted ￿ndS not committed or invested in fixed ass¢ts h¢ld
by the charity should be between 3 and 6 months of expendittwe. It is acknowledged that after the opening on th¢ 1st
March that the next 12 months, a year of transitlon from flnishing the restoration and runnitig a business to deliv¢r its
¢haritabl¢ objcctives, will continue as a potential strain on reserves. Therefore, the Trustees have instigated a review of
its business model and business proc¢sscs.
Due to the cutrent level of reserves, the TTUSte¢s ¢onsid¢r it appropriat¢ to pr¢pare the fmancial statements on a going
concern basAS.

The improvem¢nts to Propety Telate to the costs of the ¢ompl¢t¢ restoration of the Marquess of Anglesevs
Column and surrounding area and are written off in tbe year th¢y ar¢ inCu￿ed as due to its nature it is not
deemed appropriate to have a carrying value.
On¢¢ th¢ restoration has been completed any fll)ancially ba8¢d valuation would be misleading to the value and
significance of the historical monument.
Further more thc costs incurred, if a valuation could be obtained, would be di5PTOPOrtionate in t¢rnis of bencfits
derived either by the company or to users of the fjnancial statements.
The t￿Ste¢S believe that should a disproportionally large amount be introduc¢d into the fmancial statements this
could give a misleading impression of the assets wealth and act a disincentive to potential donoTS.
Th¢ ¢ompany aims to maintain the Marquess of Anglesey's Colum1] and s￿￿ounding area in good repair and has
a duty of care to these assets and to mak¢ them available for public benefit.
Once the restOTation is complet¢ any ongoing costs of associated repair and conservation will be included in the
Statement of Fillancial Activities in the year that they are incurred.
