Chairs Report 2022/2023
The last year has generally been a frustrating time for the Butterley Ironworks Trust (BIT), for several reasons.
Having been recipients of a National Heritage Lottery Fund (NHLF) Grant, BIT was able to fund appointment of specialist consultants to prepare a project brief (and NHLF submission) for a potential heritage attraction at the former Butterley Works site. Unfortunately, further funding has not yet been approved.
A fundamental obstacle seems to be the inability of the Planning Authority and Aquarius Developments Limited (the site owners) to agree terms of the S106 Agreement. It is not publicly known what the difficulties might be, but the absence of a fully approved scheme is certainly a hindrance to further funding.
Like so many charitable organisations, BIT could benefit from additional new members joining the organising committee. If that person might be you, then please get in touch! But in the meantime, I wish to thank all the current committee members, and the Officers, for their commitment and work. Without it, BIT would struggle to survive.
Clearly, BIT faces many challenges, and until we secure the long-term future of all the heritage features of the site, we shall continue in our endeavours.
