Samaritans of Barnsley, 77 Pitt Street West, Barnsley, S70 1BN, is registered with the Charity Commissioners (Number: 1173665) and Companies House (Number: CE011207) as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation.

The Trustees during the year are as stated on page 1. Brenda Wade has acted as director since 1 January 2024.

The charity previously operated as an unincorporated charity, The Samaritans of Barnsley (Number: 502413). The unincorporated charity became a linked charity of the Charitable Incorporated Organisation upon its incorporation. Samaritans of Barnsley was registered as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation on 3 July 2017. The charity commenced operations as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation on 1 October 2017.

The objects of the charity are:

- To enable persons in Barnsley and the surrounding area as well as elsewhere who are experiencing feelings of distress or despair, including those who may be at risk of suicide, to receive confidential emotional support at any time of the day or night in order to improve their emotional health and to reduce the incidence of suicide;

- To promote a better understanding in society of suicide, suicidal behaviour and the value of expressing feelings which may otherwise lead to suicide or impaired emotional health; and

- To collaborate with and support Samaritans Central Charity and its affiliated branches in fulfilling these objects.

Samaritans of Barnsley is committed to providing Samaritan’s service for people in Barnsley and the surrounding areas. We have a diverse population within our catchment area and will strive to provide the service in line with our committed values.

## **Samaritan Aim**

We are pleased to support the aims of the Charity:

- To provide assistance to individuals who are suicidal, despairing or in distress in order to reduce the incidence of suicide.

- To advance education by providing society with a better understanding of suicide, suicidal behaviour and the value of expressing feelings that may lead to suicide.

This is reflected in Samaritans Mission, Vision and Values statement.

**Vision** – that fewer people will die by suicide

**Mission** – we work to achieve this vision by making it our Mission to alleviate emotional distress and reduce the incidence of suicidal feelings and suicidal behaviour. We do this by:

- Being available 24 hours a day to provide emotional support for people who are experiencing feelings of emotional distress or despair, including those which may lead to suicide

- Reaching out to high risk groups and communities to reduce the risk of suicide

- Working in partnership with other organisations, agencies and experts to achieve our Vision.

- Influencing public policy and raising awareness of the challenges of reducing suicide

**Values** – We are committed to the following values:

- Listening because exploring feelings alleviates distress and helps people to reach a better understanding of their situation and the options open to them

- Confidentiality, because if people feel safe, they are more likely to be open about their feelings

- People making their own decisions wherever possible, because we believe that people have the right to find their own solution and telling people what to do takes responsibility away from them

- Being non-judgemental, because we want people to be able to talk to us without fear of prejudice or rejection

- Human contact because giving people time, undivided attention and empathy meets a fundamental emotional need and reduces distress and despair.

The shop has been rented out to a local businessman since 18 November 2016. Our utmost thanks go to Integra Advisers LLP for their continued support and processing our annual accounts.

We will, as Trustees, continue to cut costs where possible, to make every endeavour to raise money to keep our Branch open and solvent.
