In accordance with Section 17(5) of the Charities Act and the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008, the trustees have had regard to the guidance on public benefit, issued by the Charity Commission, when exercising any powers or duties to which the guidance may be relevant. All trustees have read the guidance and take it into account at their regular meetings and in planning the organisation’s activities.

**Summary of the main activities undertaken for the public benefit in relation to these objects (include within this section the statutory declaration that trustees have had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit)**

The Club provides facilities to develop skills and knowledge to construct working railway models and to research prototype railways. It provides educational instruction on the methods and tools (e.g. electronics, metal working, computer assisted design (CAD), laser cutting, 3D printing, soldering etc.) to develop scale models. The Club also holds skills workshops, led by experts, and educational talks on both the operation of prototype & model railways and the history of railways and allied transport systems.

The Club organises model railway exhibitions and educational visits and supports local events. Collectively and individually, members give talks, contribute to railway magazine articles and railway related websites and blogs.

Section D Achievements and performance

**Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year**

The Club continued to hold its regular weekly meetings, which the public may attend, to further its objectives of fostering a general interest, in model railways, prototype railways and allied pursuits and encouraging a high standard of railway modelling.

Also, in line with its public benefit objectives, the Club held a number of exhibitions during the year – October (Haddenham), February (Princes Risborough) and May (Aylesbury). These provided a range of inspirational, high quality model railway layouts, practical skills demonstrations and an environment to learn more about railway modelling and prototype railways. About 2250 members of the public attended.

In July the club held a free-to-enter open day in support of the Princes Risborough Festival. We provided demonstrations of railway modelling, opportunities for hands-on train operation and historical and modelling information on Aylesbury Station in the 1960s. This contributed to the objectives of advancing public education, and fostering a general interest, in model and prototype railways. About 100 members of the public attended.

In March, the club hosted a talk, open to the public, by well-known brass kit manufacturer and railway modeller Tony Sheffield (Brassmasters). The club also held a competition, judged by Tony, to encourage and inspire high quality railway modelling. About 35 people attended.

The Club continued to use Facebook and its free-to-view YouTube channel to maintain contact, provide advice and demonstrate modelling techniques. The Facebook Page has more than 200 followers and the YouTube channel currently has 40 videos containing demonstrations, inspirational model railways etc. There are currently over 440 subscribers, and the channel has been viewed 63,150 times.

The Club produced a free, quarterly publication “Footplate” containing instructive modelling items, Club news and details of relevant model railway and prototype railway events.

The Club hosted a number of talks open to the public e.g. on ‘Malaysian Railways’, ‘Unusual Railways’, the 19[th] century Wycombe Railway. Individual club members gave talks and demonstrations to other organisations.

These activities contributed to the objectives of advancing public education and of developing and sharing skills and knowledge to construct working railway models and to research prototype railways.

During the year the Club also began discussions with Quainton Railway Society to establish a permanent Club building at the Bucks Railway Centre at Quainton, Bucks. This would enable the development of a range of collaborative activities of mutual benefit to both charities.
