In accordance with Section 17(5) of the Charities Act and the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008, the trustees have had regard to the guidance on public benefit, issued by the Charity Commission, when exercising any powers or duties to which the guidance may be relevant. All trustees have read the guidance and take it into account at their regular meetings and in planning the organisation’s activities.

**Summary of the main activities undertaken for the public benefit in relation to these objects (include within this section the statutory declaration that trustees have had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit)**

The Club provides facilities to develop skills and knowledge to construct working railway models and to research prototype railways. It provides educational instruction on the methods and tools (e.g. electronics, metal working, computer assisted design (CAD), laser cutting, soldering etc.) to develop scale models. The Club also holds skills workshops, led by experts, and educational talks on both the operation of prototype & model railways and the history of railways and allied transport systems.

The Club organises model railway exhibitions and educational visits and supports local events. Collectively and individually, members give talks, contribute to railway magazine articles and railway related websites and blogs.

Section D Achievements and performance

## **Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year**

Covid 19 and the consequential restrictions on social gatherings continued to severely impact the Club’s activities this year. It was not possible to hold any physical meetings until July 2021. Our annual physical exhibitions also had to be cancelled.

In the absence of physical meetings the Club set-up an online presence using Facebook to maintain contact, provide advice and demonstrate modelling techniques. Virtual Club meetings were also held. The Club resumed regular Friday evening meetings in July 2021.

The Club produced a free, quarterly publication “Footplate” containing instructive modelling items, Club news and details of relevant model railway and prototype railway events. During lockdown additional editions of Footplate were produced.

To complement the Club’s Facebook page, a free-to-view YouTube channel has been developed which currently has 28 videos containing demonstrations, inspirational model railways etc. There are currently over 300 subscribers and the channel has been viewed 2195 times.

These activities contributed to the objectives advancing public education and of developing and sharing skills and knowledge to construct working railway models and to research prototype railways

The Club organised a, public, free-to-access, virtual model railway exhibition – ‘Railex’ (May 2021) which contributed to the objectives of advancing public education and promoting general interest. This provided the public with demonstration videos, live expert advice and inspiring railway models. The virtual Railex website has, so far, attracted over 4000 visitors.
