## ANNUAL REPORT 2021 ## WELCOME FROM CHAIR **Thank you for reading this Annual Report, which we hope reflects the value of the incredible work done by Marian and her team at Dost during 2020 and 2021. We also hope you will feel the enormous contribution that the young people bring to being part of Dost, and the resilience, friendship and shared successes that they enjoy through taking part in the wide range of activities and opportunities each week** **Jim Minton December 2021** **Without experiencing the huge challenges that young refugees and migrants face, it is hard to imagine just how important the offer of support and safe spaces for learning, personal development and fun can be.** **But the team at Dost work tirelessly to ensure that those young people do have opportunities to connect and to fulfil their potential and make new opportunities for themselves.** **2021 has been, of course, another very challenging year. The lockdowns meant that Marian and the team had to continue to offer remote services; help with homework; pastoral support; online exercise/art/creative classes and ensure there was somewhere for the young people to turn to even when physical connection wasn’t possible.** **And gradually as restrictions ended we could return to helping those young people safely readjust to activities, outdoors at first and then gradually in indoor spaces to do sport, arts, learning, outdoor adventure and skills building together. The pandemic may have changed many things - but the pressures that force people to leave their country and seek refuge in the UK and other places are just as strong as ever.** **Marian and the team have ensured that Dost has always been able to offer a welcome place for young refugees: and as global conflict and disruption continue - most recently in Afghanistan, Dost has continued to play a vital role in supporting those who find themselves in a new country, uncertain and often alone.** **As Trustees we feel very privileged to work with Marian and her team of staff and volunteers and to be part of the special place that Dost has for young refugees.** **We are, as always, very grateful to all our funders/ partners for trusting in Dost and supporting our work and enabling us to fulfil our aims and our visions and in being able to continue to support so many young people. We have continued to provide a service to many young people, both long term attenders and newly referred/ arrived young people. Like everyone else, we started the year online, running English and Homework sessions and weekly Quiz nights with another group. We covered topics such as personal safety, drugs and alcohol, stop and search, relationships, immigration and general knowledge.** **These were lively sessions, with lots of discussions and prizes!** ## ACHIEVEMENTS AND CHALLENGES **In March, we started our face to face sessions again, which consisted of a diverse range of trips and leisure activities that included:** **Football and volleyball sessions delivered at various sites in East London, including a football tournament at Newham Powerleague where we invited two other Refugee Organisations to join in and a tournament at St George's Park, where we won the Cup!** - **Canoeing trips to the Laburnum Boat Club with another Youth Project History tour of Central London and boat ride to Greenwich** - **Day trips to Cambridge where we punted down the river and met with University students and to Brighton to play beach volleyball, lasertag, football and table tennis at the Brighton Table Tennis Club Swimming and fun on giant slides and inflatables at Parliament Hill Lido, Aquabounce and Coral Reef Waterworld** - **Entertainment events - Radio 1 'Out Out Gig' at Wembley and a theatre trip to see Phosphoros performing a show about being a displaced person as well as a Pantomime to see Jack and the Beanstalk** - **Adrenaline fueled activities including BMX'ing at the Olympic Velodrome, go-karting around a race track and trampolining.** **Newham Leisure Centre reopened in July and we returned to our twice weekly sports sessions, with football, volleyball, table tennis, pool, badminton, basketball and cricket as well as satellite services from SHINE (Sexual Health Service).** **We have continued to play weekly football at Newham Powerleague and continue to access football sessions by Tottenham FC and have restarted our weekly sessions at Decathlon.** **In October, we opened our English/ Homework sessions at Custom House Library and these have been proving very popular and a hugely vital resource for our young people.** **We also have provided 4 residentials including 3 to Wey Island Trust for a total of 10 days. There we did activities such as canoeing, raft-building, tie-dying, BBQ's, camp fires, cooking, baking, photography / film making, bingo nights, a stop and search workshop with the Police and lots of general fun and group bonding!** **We also brought a large group of young people to the OSH 5 day residential where we took part in African drumming, workshops on community, identity and leadership, talent nights, dancing and lots of games and arts! DOST CENTRE FOR YOUNG REFUGEES AND MIGRANTS **Newham Leisure Centre 281 Prince Regent Lane London E13 8SD** ## ANNUAL REPORT 2021 ## AIMS OF DOST CENTRE Dost (which means friends in a number of languages), was established as an independent Charity in 2017 and has gone from strength to strength. We provide young refugees and migrants, aged 13-19 years of age, from all across London, with a varied and diverse programme of physical and educational activities in order to reduce their isolation and increase their skills and capabilities and to support them to reach their full potential. ## CHARITY STRUCTURE AND GOVERNANCE The Trustees confirm that they have referred to the Guidance contained in the Charity Commissions' general guidance on public benefit when reviewing the Charity's aims and objectives and in planning all future activities. Dost is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) and our governing document is based on the Charity Commission’s model Constitution for a CIO whose only voting members are its' Trustees. We received our independent charity registration and approval for this governing document in August 2017. In line with the model constitution we can have a maximum of 12 trustees, all of whom must be over 16 years of age. For the period covered by the 2020-2021 Report, we had 7 Trustees. All are currently still serving and all are over 16. As we are a small and relatively new charity, (as an independent entity), we have used a variety of mechanisms to recruit trustees, all permitted by our governing document. Two new Trustees have joined the Board this year; one is a past member of Dost who has gone on to achieve amazing things and the other is newly joined and also has lived experience of being involved in Dost as a member. Trustees join the Board because they are known to staff members or other trustees or are directly involved in volunteering or attending Dost and all bring an expertise, skill or interest which is helpful to the charity. As the charity grows and develops, the Trustees will look at other methods for recruitment to match skills and experience needs of the charity. All Trustees are appointed by the Board ,with a resolution noted in the minutes, to ensure they have been formally approved. All Trustees can nominate and elect to post. Their details are then uploaded onto the Charity Commission database. If anyone would like to get involved with Dost and become a Trustee we'd be delighted to hear from you! I’ve been a Dost member for over 12 years now. Being a member of Dost, is one of the best experience ever. Dost has been apart of me from During the years at Dost, I have met loads of individuals a young age, Dost was a place where I from different background and cultures. This has enhanced met new people, learnt valuable socialising skills my skills on how to talk to different groups of people. Our Charity insurance provides Trustee Indemnity cover against executive risks to the sum of £250,000. Our reserves at year end were £69,965 of which £35,882 were restricted and £34,083 were unrestricted. Dost's reserves policy balances the need to build up long term reserves against the need for short term spending on core activities . The Charity's reserves exist to provide short term protection against downward fluctuations in annual revenues.
