Chair’s Report
This report will update the board of trustees of Brixton Wings on our strategic activities undertaken since our last AGM for year ended 2023-2024. The Accounts for 2024-25 will be presented at this AGM for year ended 2025.
Our dedicated team of trustees, teachers, inspiring volunteers, and parents are fully committed to ensuring we provide the best possible learning, nurturing and skills development environment for disadvantaged and underrepresented young people living in the Angell Town and surrounding estates in Brixton. We provide resources and facilities for early intervention and prevention programs, including weekly after-School group music lessons, a comprehensive Saturday school with a focus on STEM subjects, weekly coding classes, weekly strength and conditioning session, and an array of mid-term activities, from sports, arts and music workshops to digital technology VR and AR introductory classes. These resources are provided for the benefit of our participants and wider community in order to ensure we meet our aims and objects, while also sustaining the organization longer term.
We deliver our group learning and development activities from our Brixton Wings centre in Angell Town, in addition to partnering with other organizations such as Active Lambeth (AL) Brixton Recreation centre, where we host our weekly strength and conditioning sessions, London Youth Rowing (LYR) who deliver our midterm on-water rowing programmes, Ebony Horse Club for our Brixton Riders Program, Lambeth Sounds for music and performance partnerships, the National Theatre for theatre trips, and Millennium Community Solutions who generously support our coding and digital initiatives.
The Brixton Wings centre is designed to facilitate group classroom activities in a safe, friendly, and nurturing environment, equipped with an array of musical instruments including two baby-grand piano, upright pianos and a host of electric keyboards, acoustic/electric guitars, amps, drums, to music workbooks and music production equipment. We support our piano students in working towards their ABRSM (Royal School of Music) grading exams up to and including grade 6, which they may use to support their university applications (UCAS), while also gaining invaluable experience in performance within our parent or community concerts. This year for example, we participated in the Big Lunch, car
free day in Angell Town, where over 20 young people performed either individually or in our Brixton Wings band for our street performances.

This year we further developed our Saturday School to include a focus on STEM subjects, a chess club, and a focus on teaming up with design student engineers from Imperial College, including Alex Clarke, who the group supported in designing and building a wood framed bicycle, made form recycled and upcycled material. Students from Brixton Wings attended a day outing to the Royal College of Art and Imperial College for the London Design Festival, providing support to build and exhibit the bike for the event. We are seeking to secure further funding for our Saturday School from the National Grid, and hope to expand the scope of the programme over 2024/’25 and 2026 to include an outing to the London Thames Barrier and exhibition centre.
Our physical development and wellbeing programme includes weekly Strength and Conditioning sessions along with indoor rowing training, presented at the Brixton Recreation centre, where students follow a coach led session, along with setting individual and relay goals in preparation for their participation at the 2026 London Youth Games, where to date we have been successful in securing six medals from gold to bronze while representing Lambeth council within the rowing competitions. Our rowing programs are presented in collaboration with London Youth Rowing and the Lambeth Sports and Development Team. These initiatives are designed to enhance the confidence and team building skills of our young participants, while also increasing the capacity of the organization and community overall.
Our music students continue to make significant progress with their Royal School of music (ABRSM) pathway to performance exams, while we continue to ensure they are adept with all aspects of music learning and playing, including notation, rhythm pulses, and genres of music. Over the course of the year, we have up to fifteen students take their music exams, with most achieving a merit result or above. Many others simply enjoy their learning experience to personal or group pace, including those who attend our Friday band workshops, where up to 20 students regularly attend these sessions, guided by our band workshop leader, and assisted by former students who are now regular volunteers and assistant teachers, having come through our programs from beginners to advanced, completing the loop from active participant to presenter.
This year we would not have been able to sustain our organisation and run our successful programs without the support of our funders, with special thanks to Lambeth Council – Changing Lives Fund, the National Grid – Local Giving, Ecosystems Coldharbour – micro grants, and Leather Sellers Foundation.
The Chair and trustees acknowledge and thank all the above funders and donors to our organization without whom we would not be able to continue to provide the resources and facilities we do.
Lil Sullivan, Chair
